Hard to turn Computer off & on ....

My computer freezes.... I have to unplug & plug back in sometimes afew times to get connected to the internet. It doesn't always shut down & have to unplug it . Mostly works fast once I get it online. I used to have restore, but it doesn't work anymore. I did have AVG , but not even sure if I have that now. Have Windows 7 . Is there something I can do or do I have to call a tech? This is a used computer that I've only had for a few months. I don't know much about computers & they seem to know that. Thank you for any help you can give me. Can't keep spending more & more on it & then it not lasting too long.

First, you should know that to unplug the machine to turn it off is only making things worse. If you continue, eventually it may not start at all. Second, your lack of knowledge and lack of available help severely limits your options. Therefore whether you like it or not, correcting this situation will involve spending some money. As I see it, here are your choices (assuming, of course that the machine has no hardware problems):

OPTION #1: Pay someone to completely reinstall Windows 7 on this computer. This will wipe out everything that is currently on the machine and return it to the way it was when it was brand new. This would also involve doing multiple Windows Updates and when finished you would have a good-running machine with an operating system that is already outdated and soon to be unsupported (no more security updates). If you're lucky and the machine has a RECOVERY PARTITION, you wouldn't have to buy a new copy of Win 7. This is probably the cheapest way to fix Windows 7.

OPTION #2: Pay someone to install Windows 10 on this machine....if it can be done. It would look different than what you're used to and would probably seem to run slower, but it would be much better than the way things are now. This might cost more than fixing Win 7 but hopefully not too much.

OPTION #3: Buy a new computer with Windows 10. What you have posted so far leads me to think your only use of a computer is to access the Internet. You'd be much better off if you would use your efforts to become familiar with the current version of Windows. If you shop carefully, you could find a good basic desktop for under $500...maybe less. Keep in mind that if you run into any problems fixing the old machine, repairing it could easily exceed the cost of a new one. A local store would be your best bet, especially if they also provide service and maybe an extra warranty.

One thing I WOULD NOT DO is use your Win 7 computer to buy something over the Internet because I'll bet it is already severely infected.

I assume you are talking about a laptop here? and on W7 or any PC for that matter you should always do a "proper shut down" at Start button then shut down. As for "freezing" is this happening when using your browser = IE? at any rate are you getting the important windows updates? and you for sure need a good AV=anti virus, make sure you do have AVG as you suppose and update it. I wish I could do a remote on your Pc, I know it really needs help and I work for Free and have for so many folks mostly seniors, but since I can not, don't you have someone who can check it out for you a friend or relative perhaps? there are important scans that need to be run for sure. You must not have your setting set to except Private Messages.

Go To:
1. Your Houzz (upper Right Corner)
2. Click Edit Profile towards upper right
3. Left Column under Account, Click on Advanced Settings
4. You should find the PM Settings towards the bottom of the Advanced Settings page. Under Who Can Message Me, select Allow Anyone to Message Me from the Drop Down Menu.
5. Go back to the top of the page where you Click on Edit Profile and you'll see Done Editing, click on it.
You should then be all set to receive and Send PM's.

hobby_libby- The average computer may typically use about as much energy as a 100 watt bulb...more if it's really high-powered, less if not, and you'll generally use less overall if you are talking about a laptap rather than a traditional computer with stand alone monitor. An LCD monitor fully on (or with a screensaver) might use about 50 watts. So if your computer and an LCD monitor are fully on 10 hours a day, you're talking about using 1.5 kWhr. The cost for a single kWhr is maybe 10-15 cents in many parts of the country, so your total energy cost to have a computer and monitor on for 10 hours a day might be about 20 cents. Now if you decide to have no screensaver AND have it go into sleepmode when you are not using it, you could save at least 15 cents a day, or maybe $50 a year...if you have air conditioning going year-round. However, during the heating months, the heat energy thrown off by the computer goes to heat your home and the furnace has to provide a little less heat, so you get little benefit there. And, of course if you actually have the computer in use, then your savings will be proportionally less. Bottomline: if you put your computer in sleep mode, with the screen off, and you don't use the computer much, you'll save enough each month to buy one extra latte at Starbucks. Don't get me wrong. Saving energy and money is a good thing, and I'm not trying to discourage you. I was just making the point that you are not going to see the massive savings you might have expected. I wasn't going to do anything because I'm supposed to get auto updates. Ususally when I get the Updates are ready message, I check and they are already installed. Well, I just checked and I have one update necessary. I'm doing it now, hoping that nothing is wrong. It's working, but boy is it slow. I do have virus protection. More scary though - I got a message the other day that a virus was innoculated. Here's hoping nothing is wrong. I can't stand these bored techno-geeks!! With all that we could use their talents for, they choose to do this. I'm sure they could get satisfaction and more money working their talents honestly.

I shut the computer down every night. I also unplug it during bad storms. We had a house fire that was caused by the toaster oven. The oven was plugged it, but not turned on. I won't leave any small appliances plugged in now and if I could unplug my microwave oven more easily, I'd keep that unplugged, too. I don't trust things to flip breakers or blow fuses. It took me a long time to get over the intense smell of smoke. We nearly lost a cat in that fire and the only reason we didn't was a fluke in timing. I got home just as the kitchen was going up in flames and I was able to put it out before the fire dept arrived. I had to try to put it out because we didn't have a telephone at the time. (Rental house, for short period, trying to save on expenses, stupid!) After I got it out, I had to run to the high school to get someone to call the FD to double check it was out. Then I had to pack all our smelly belongings so we could move out that day, no way could we stay there. That was a horrible, scary day and all because of a small appliance. My parents have a nifty system, Pops put an outlet/surge protector strip on the counter, behind the small appliances, and they are all plugged into it and it is plugged in. They turn it on as needed, but it's always off when nothing is being used.

So the problem seems to be at the tower? try this pull power plug from tower only, then while it is out hold in the button for 20 secs or so. then plug power cable back and start see if this helps, sometimes it builds up an overload of power.

Ty...am using Chrome. There are just things I can't do anymore on it. Still have to unplug & plug it in at times. I did have AVG on it, but not sure if I do anymore. Don't have anyone that knows enough to help me & the Techs seem to take advantage of me not knowing too much about computers. I'm at a loss, not knowing even how to explain what's really happening with this. Ty for your patience anyway.

My computer(s) sometimes have a similar problem: try to properly shut down; sometimes it works fine but it's very slow. On my home computer, I get the message "Windows is shutting down", and the screen goes black. But the fans, HD, etc., continue running. The next morning, sometimes they have stopped, and sometimes not. If not, I push the rest button and it restarts and everything seems OK. This computer is now running Windows 6 (Vista), and it had the same problem when it was running Windows 5 (XP), so it must be a hardware problem. I will probably simply buy a new computer, but some of the applications won't run on a 64 bit OS, and that appears the only version of Windows 10 now available.

My next question was going to be has W10 arrived on your PC? if the download is there then you should absolutely install it. It may appear on the taskbar bottom right or if you go to windows updates. If you have it, then install is easy, just do as asked, your PC will do the rest, it will take some time so sit back and relax, the pc may restart during the process, so I hope it works out?

I'm not the one with the private message problem, mine is set to receive, but I wanted to send my e-mail addy to Sharon and could not. I do not see on hers to send her a PM. As for some previous advice. You can try to restore W7 back to factory settings, but if the problem is in your power, it will make no difference.

You may want to download ASC=advanced system care Free, I use it for years, just make sure it's the FREE version and take any check marks out or decline browsers or addon's except the IOBIT ones, some are very good, and you can uninstall any of them later. Have ASC run a scan on all, especially registry, it will fix the errors. below is link to DL

I would recommend a forced shut down using the power button (hold down for 5 seconds) then reboot in safe mode advanced options and choose "last known good configuration".

She can also download a forced shut down command shortcut but I wont' go there yet.
