If you open your Adobe Reader program and drop down the list under HELP, there is a line "check for updates". A list will come up and you can see if there is anything in the list that you want to update. If so, just check the things you want and update it.

If you are seeing the ads presented on this site right click on one and what does the bottom line on the appearing drop down menu say?

In my case it reports "About Adobe Flash Player 9".

Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash are apples and oranges.

No ads. It sounds to me that you have Flash Player disabled in your browsers. My IE7 has a tool menu which includes managing add-ons.

I personally am not overly concerned with active X controls so I am not very familiar with them. I am sure someone will be along shortly to expand on your concern.

Last ditch effort if all else fails would be to delete the Flash entry you referred to above and download and reinstall the most current version which was released this week.

That is what I thought maybe I should do. . . Delete The AFP 9 Active X in the Add/Remove and get the new one. I never have understood the Active X thing.

I will wait a while to see if anyone comes along with other info.

If you still have trouble the best thing as damccoy said is to uninstall it using the adobe uninstaller in the link provided, then reinstall flash, when you install flash a yellow bar will appear at the top of the browser you have to click yes or something to accept "Active x control. You should also consider up-dating your Adobe reader program.

DA, yes, but it was confusing and I wasn't sure if I was doing it right, but it works.

Then I tried to get a CNN video and I get this message with IE:
This CNN.com feature is optimized for Adobe Flash Player version 8 or higher.
You are currently using Flash Player 0

I found some step by step instructions from AumHa Forums.
A caveat before you start...back up the registry before making any changes. If you don't know how to do this, please ask and I will offer step by step instructions.

The steps to uninstall non functioning Adobe Flash Player and replace it with Adobe Flash Player 9 Stand Alone:

Download the following two applications:
Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
Adobe Flash Player 9 Stand-alone Installer (NB: Link to the Direct Download of the updated executable): http://www.macromedia.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_ie

Check in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, for any entry "Adobe Flash Player Active X" and uninstall the entry.

With no other application running, run the Uninstaller you downloaded earlier.

In the Registry editor (regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\DistributionUnits\(D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000)
In the Left-hand pane, right-click on the key (folder) named
(D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000), and choose Delete. Exit the registry editor.
Reboot your computer.

With no other application running, run the Adobe Flash Player 9 stand-alone installation you downloaded earlier.
Reboot your computer.

Open IE and Test. Be sure to check under Tools, Manage Add-ons, that the Flash Player 9 is enabled.

I have already, as in above post, uninstalled V9 Active X, and installed V9. That is working, but for the CNN video, which is not important.

For now I'm leaving well enough alone.
