Sorry to ask such a question.....

but, looking around at laptops for work and wonder how important is a large hard drive?? I thought it was important, but I notice the Dell systems with XP only have 80GB hard drives. Want a XP machine.

Go to http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/laptops.to?coid=-26368 and check out there office versions
(Satellite Pro and the Tecra series)which are of a higher end and better build quality. The Satellites are more for general home use and are a slightly lower build quality

Thank you very much. I thought Dell was the only company still offering XP on some of their models.

Toshiba prices seem better.

kqcrna ....its really a very easy question to answer and you can use this formula anytime you think you have the same excuse to use soil. Measure the area's width and length in feet...multiple the two. That gives you square footage. Then, multiply that figure times the depth IN INCHES of soil you plan on using. The figure you multiply times 3, divide by a thousand. (multiply by .003) The resulting figure gives you exactly the required CUBIC YARDS of soil required. Let's go with 3" 4 X 8 = 32 square feet.....times 3" = 96 Divide by 1000...= .096 X 3 = 2.76 cubic yards. Now that's the way to do in future. Now about the cardboard. What's that supposed to be doing. Its September...and if you remember the September song...November aint so far away. If you are planning to kill grass or whatever under that cardboard...well, OK, it might do the job by next September. It surely will not, cannot, kill anything between now and spring. The method you are using, usually called "lasagna", needs heat build-up and deprivation of sun and water to kill what's underneath. Unless you live in Florida....and even there, it wont do the job in time, it doesn't stand a chance in you know where to do anything before you will want the patch. Soil --3" or more, put over the ground, will surely smother weeds/lawn/and anything else, including tree roots, simply by asphyxiation...denying oxygen. The time to plan a lasagna garden cure is in spring so that the coming summer heat can do its thing.

The seeds are ripe when they are dried. Some clematis have large dark brown/black seeds while others are beige, some are large and some are small. Look closely at the seedhead and you will see anywhere from 0 to many seeds. Watch them develop and you will be able to tell when they are no longer changing and probably ripe. I have seen clematis seeds still on a plant even after a long winter. While seedlings will not be exactly the same as the parent they often have lovely blooms. Though I buy or start clematis from cuttings/layering I also grow some from seed just for the challenge. Some seeds will germinate easily and quickly while others can take a long time. In some areas clematis self seed and the seedlings can be potted or moved to another area. Google clematis seeds/seedlings and you will find info on what they look like and germination requirements.

Chena, Thanks for the information. I hope it does fine in his office - from what I have seen and what he tells me everyday it seems very happy. I don't know if I would be able to keep it in the house either. His office STINKS! I think it is just too much smell in too little space. People are constantly commenting on the smell because the whole top floor of his place of work smells. I saw the first bloom and I couldn't live without it now! My plants are like my animals - they are like a family member to me. I would bend over backwards to make them happy. So I am hoping it stays happy. Now, what should I fertilize it with since it is in his office? I don't want to use anything that could make my husband sick :). Will is also be alright to take it back outside when the temps in my area come back up? Thanks again. doggies7 / Kim

You've got it about right, but in case you haven't gotten the cement board yet, Ditra doesn't cost all that much more. Matter of fact, most contractors won't even charge extra to switch from one to the other. As for the thinset under the cement board, it most certainly IS required. Whichever brand you're using-- Hardi, Wonderboard, Durock-- whichever-- go to their website and check the installation instructions. There's a good reason for it, too. THe thinset isn't there to adhere the cement board to the subfloor. That's what the screws are for. It's there to cushion it-- elimintate the paper thin void that would exist otherwise, which would allow vibration between the layers and end up drastically shortening the life of the floor. To answer your question about the 3/4" and Ditra, yes, you could have, so long as this is ceramic and not stone we're talking about.

Is this new computer replacing something? If so, how much space are you currently using? Are there plans to accumulate lots more large files? Bigger is better in the sense that it gives you room to expand. But 80GB will serve you just as well as 120GB if you are only using 30GB.

I was somewhat surprised to see XP Pro on one of their machines too. I live in Canada and it is not offered up here. If it was, I would be buying a new laptop. But after seeing some of the grief people were having with Vista, I am going to hang on til Vista SP1 comes out. The only option I have . Its very hard to find XP drivers on some models for the downgrade from Vista

I've been using Vista for 3 weeks. It works just fine. I think its the same as but somehow a step or two nicer than xp.
Takes about a week to get used to the changes. You do do twice as much clicking to get to most system settings. They've seemed to want to hide things, that most people probably wouldn't mess with anyhow.
There are some old faithful third party programs that havent been Vista-ized yet and a few that I've tried that say Vista compatable which they havent fully worked out their bugs.

Microsoft gave me a wifi NIC upgrade, my only blue screen - but miscrosoft has done that for years with hardware drivers - WQL approved = Windows Quality Labs ;)

Vista with MS-Works Laptop here uses 15-20GB of hard drive with no other major programs installed.

Thanks, I spent the weekend researching both Toshiba and Dell laptops. I need to stay with XP because of software problems with Vista. Our other office machines run XP and the laptop will be part of the office.

Toshiba has a number of machines still running XP as does Dell. The other companies are all Vista. We will probably go with Dell because of their support and they have a Vostro line which is geared to networking and durability. The prices from both companies are about the same.

Software problems with Vista--That's exactly why I am staying with XP for as long as I possibly can. I have no desire to lose all the programs I have bought over a period of years and either have to do without them or pay all over again to get compatible ones.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to connect an external hard drive to a laptop? I realize it would defeat the purpose of having a computer you can carry around, but I can think of some ways you might use it--for example, if you wanted to keep a lot of music and picture files to use only at home, then you could keep the external drive there. I've never had a laptop, though, so I don't know what ports they have on them.

All you need is a external hard drive in an enclosure and plug it into any usb port on the laptop.

Look for a 2.5 HDD USB enclosure and HDD then you have the opportunity of using this spare when your main HDD dies

I got a new Toshiba Satellite laptop for Christmas with Vista on it.
so far so good......but the tech who set it up for Wi_Fi for me said he could change it to XP if I wanted. He explained that he has a CD that he can use and it can still be legal as Microsoft knows I paid for the Vista and the registration number can be changed over to Vista.....or I can partion it with XP..which he advised me not to do.
Still learning Vista....but so far.....no problems.
