Does it make sense to add accent lighting later?

We are meeting the electrician at the house this week to design the lighting. I am going with mostly chandeliers, pendants, and a few sconces. I am having a hard time with accent lighting. I would like it to highlight art and such but have no idea what I will buy or where I will place it. I really want to take my time with it.

So my question is Does it make sense to hold off on adding it? Or should I just guess at it because it is easier to do it with the walls open?

I would say to guess at it thoughfully because I am in the process of adding it afterwards now and its no fun. Its either costly to pay someone else to do it or time consuming with me in the attic :) Its so much easier to add now with the walls open!

We moved into an existing house last year and added an outdoor light on the porch and some track lighting in the foyer. It was no fun and expensive. If you are thinking about lighting and not sure exactly where you want it maybe track lighting might work.
We are also in the process of relocating a ceiling light and we were told that it is an easy fix - hopefully it won't be expensive either.

I haven't had a chance to take a good look at your kitchen layout yet, but the first thing that struck me is whether you have a view from your kitchen sink or if there is a wall there. My house is a bit similar in design - a very long, narrow house with a bit of water view off the back. Our original floor plan had our kitchen where yours is, with an eat in area where your existing family room is. We had a deck then running the width of the house on the back, and eventually enclosed 3/4 of the deck as a screened in porch with doors off the eat in area (your existing family room). This wasn't supposed to be our long term home, but 16 years later, we are still here and our family has expanded. We ended up tearing off the screened in porch and turning the existing space into a family room (with new master on the second story above it). We also then enclosed most of what was left of the deck (where your eat in area is) and made that a mudroom. My kitchen sink is/was exactly where yours is, and prior to the add on, had a window with a nice view of the water. We left the window space there so that I can look through the mudroom to the water (double french doors lead out to the remaining deck). I spend a lot of time in my kitchen especially at my sink, between prepping for meals and cleaning up after them. Much more time than I ever spend at my kitchen table! I am so glad that we left that opening from the window so that I can see the nice view out the back. If you have a wall there, I'd really encourage you to remove it and have that open to your eat in area. I'm starting the process of redoing our kitchen and have tried many different ways to rework my floor plan as it gets congested, especially in the morning, with my family members. However, I just can't figure out a way to redo the layout and still take advantage of the view unless I leave my sink where it is and come sunset, it really is just amazing to stand there making dinner and look out at the pink and orange sky.

My DH just did this as a favor to a friend. Small bathroom, from the 50's. Original pink and white tile. She already had a new toilet. All he did was replace the vanity, and the pink tile floor she hated, with a simple white tile with little black accents. He recaulked the original shower and left it as is. The pink tiled walls remained throughout and the way cool integrated ceramic soap dishes by the sink also stayed. I cannot get over how fresh and lovely the bathroom looks now.....it's totally worth doing.

Oh, Marcolo, that picture makes me laugh because I had been teasing DH that our daughter's play kitchen would be a perfect color scheme for a 1940's house. He just gave me that look. I know exactly what you mean by putting in the wrong decade and I agree with you for the most part, but then our neighborhood houses' original finishes were I think closer to the '30's than the '40's (maybe the builder was using up stuff left over from before the war) -- though I don't really know. All the kitchens I've seen on the street have been redone, or at least repainted, at some point in between and the new ones all look very much like 2000-2010 kitchens. Granite as far as the eye can see. Christine and mama_goose, thank you for the input! I've looked at Barker Door and I will check out DoorStop too. I will have to go sniff some Cabinet Coat and see if it would work for the resp-sensitive family members. Unfortunately (or not), we don't have a garage or other separate enclosed space for painting. Mama_goose, I remember your kitchen and it is just charming. I love how you have made it all your own. I believe our house's original cabinets were much like yours except with slab doors, from what DH tells me (he was the one who replaced them with frameless melamine in the late 80's).

Rules are meant to be broken. Lol. If there is a new mantel i like the width. Smaller will encourage more accents on mantel. But all in the eye of the beholder. Art is personal. I like the clean look of this art. A new fixture would also enhance the room But just offering other options.

If the attic is accessible, have the rough wiring run to a J-box in the attic in the general location of where you want to put the light, with a lot of extra wire loopage. It will be a LOT cheaper to cut the hole in the ceiling later and just move the box than it will to have to run wire all the way from the box to that spot.

I think it's better to take a shot at it and have it put in, even if it's just approximate....it's a lot easier to move an existing can or box than to have to install one where there's no wiring or switches. Also, if you get recessed cans, there are different trims that may work to highlight the art from an existing fixture. Best is if you know where the art is going to go.....like centered over a fireplace. Also Candice Olson always puts recessed cans in front of drapery panels...I didn't do that...was talked out of it...and then had to retrofit to add them and it was $$$.

In today's open plan houses it shouldn't be difficult to decide which walls are suitable for artwork. The issue is whether or not you would decide later to put a mirror there or put nothing there. The time to figure that out is now. You can always remove the lamp in the recessed fixture if you change your mind. It is also possible to use adjustable low voltage fixtures that can be directed down or at the wall.

The light in a room that is directed toward a wall is reflected back into the room and that makes the space feel larger and more dramatic and with the use of dimmers it is easy to control it.

Do you have a plan for furniture and floor/table lamps?

With the walls framed and a good idea of where furniture will go -- the location for art should be readily apparent.

YMMV, but I was shocked how little wall space we have for art in our window heavy box.
