South Louisiana Snow

What an event this was!! In more than 50 years, I think that it has snowed 4 times where we live in Louisiana. Each time was just a light dusting and it never stayed around for more than a few hours before melting.

We woke on Thursday AM to find a winter wonderland of FIVE inches had fallen in the wee hours of the night! It is now 36 hours later and we STILL have some snow on our deck, the barn roof and here and there in the yard and pasture.

Even though we lost a couple of small trees and a lot of branches from the weight of the ice and snow, I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

I spent 4 years in PA during college so snow isn't a total novelty, but the novelty of having it here is really something. The views basically are the same here yearround.... sure we lose a few leaves, but there is never this beautiful transformation of the landscape that you Northerners get to experience!

Mr. Biggs was ready to go inside, but Attagirl was having loads of fun. I was worried about DH Joe slipping since he is only 5 weeks post hip transplant. If you look closely you can see the green leaves on the pecan tree behind Joe. During Hurricane Gustav the pecans, at least the ones that didn't fall down, had all of their leaves blown off and they budded back out in mid September... they usually would have fallen off by now but they're still green and fresh.

I'm amazed! I grew up in Biloxi and went to school at LSU. I've never seen that much snow down there. My mom has pictures of me from the snow in 1963 and I think it was close to that much, but I don't remember it. Biloxi didn't get any this time around. My mom said everyone was really hoping for it, but it was just rain.

We were just in the perfect spot!! And it set a record. Baton Rouge is 20 miles or so south of us and they "only" got about 2 inches and that was still a miracle! The northern part of the state and MS didn't get any.

We were glad we had a fireplace as the power was off for almost 7 hours due to limbs on the lines. But we were outside playing a lot of the time anyway!!!!!

Zantedeschia grow from rhizomes ( closer to tubers, not actual bulbs). I second: prominent veins don't fit, together with the leaf shape. So probably another genus, other Zantedeschia species seem to have different foliage also. Going dormant would fit with some swampy habitat and draught period. Did you get it as a garden plant? This is a quote from The Southern Living Gardening Book: "Plants take 2 to 3 years to come into full production but then furnish spears every spring for 10 to 15 years or more. They take up considerable space but do so in a grand manner. Use along a sunny fence or as a background for flowers or vegetables. (You don't have to plant every plant all together. You can scatter them around through ornamental beds and just walk around to harvest.) Set out seedlings or roots (not wilted, no smaller than an adult's hand) in fall or winter. Make trenches 1 ft. wide and 8-10 inches deep. Space them 4 to 6 ft. apart. Heap loose soil enriched with composted manure at bottom of trenches and soak well. Space plants 1 ft. apart, setting them so that tops are 6 to 8 inches below the top of the trench. Spread roots out evenly. Cover with 2 inches of soil and water again. As young plants grow, gradually fill in trench, taking care not to cover growing tips. Soak deeply whenever soil begins to dry out at root depth. Do not harvest spears the first year. The object is to build a big root mass. When plants turn brown in late fall or early winter, cut stems to the ground. The following spring you can cut your first spears; cut only for 4 to 6 weeks or until appearance of thin spears indicates that roots are nearing exhaustion. Then permit plants to grow. Cultivate, feed, and irrigate heavily. The third year you should be able to cut spears for 8 to 10 weeks. Spears are ready to cut when they are 5-8 inches long. Thrust knife down at 45 degree angle to soil; flat cutting may injure adjacent developing spears." "Jersey Knight is the best variety for Southern Growers. Male hybrids typically produce more and larger spears, because they don't put energy into seed production. Such selections still produce an occasional female plant." At my old house, I followed the above instructions and had asparagus there. (I live in East Central MS, about 200 miles inland from the Gulf Coast.) I made a three foot wide raised bed alongside my vegetable garden and planted nothing in it but asparagus. Ever. That is one disadvantage to asparagus and why they are so expensive. You cannot plant anything else in their bed. That soil only produces something edible for 2 to 3 montsh each year. In my youthful ignorance, I bought the typical order of plants, which is 20, and then split them with a friend to save money. Ten plants never produced enough spears at one time to feed my family of four. However, the plants did well, and required very little work except feeding, watering, and giving them a good mulch each year to keep down weeds. If I had space, I would definitely grow them again, but plant AT LEAST 20 roots this time. The Gardening Book says asparagus will grow as far south as the Lower South, which is all the way down except a narrow strip along the coast. Asparagus roots are not that expensive, though you may have to hunt for Jersey Knight. If you want to grow them, do a really good job of preparing the soil and digging the trenches and see what happens. It's not much to lose and you just might succeed!

invest in a load calculation to size the unit to the house. avoiding rule of thumb sizing will allow smaller units, and dehumidification. 500 sq ft per ton is approx what is speced for your home. this will result in oversized units that will short cycling, resulting in higher operating costs & shortened life of equipment. tightness of house, and reducing the duct leakage are also good investments. the average duct system has 25-30% duct leakage. upgrade the insulation package to include foam seal of attic if ducts are placed in attic. there are several guides you can access through LSU Ag Center for building in a hot humid climate. Slemco has a design one brochure you can access online. building science has a builder's guide to hot humid climates also acessable online. use your time wisely to educate yourself as to what makes an efficient house in our climate. where are you building? best of luck.

Oh my goodness. I am so glad I checked in here. I'm in PA and you've had much more snow than we have. It's beautiful.

Even more than the snow, I enjoyed the peek into your life. Your horse is so pretty -- looks like my imaginary dream horse from my childhood. Cute doggies and cute DH. Cute house, too -- what's in the boxes on the doorstep??

HA!! No one can ever say that our animals aren't lucky.... fell into a tub of butter as we say when they landed at our house!

But it does get cold (or at least the 10 lb Jack Russell thinks so)!! He doesn't wear his little polar fleece blanket very often but his 12 year old bones love it when I get it out. Sometimes we come in from the barn and I'll even leave it on him in the house for a few hours!!

We travel with the horses and camp with them tied to the trailer so the waterproof sheets are essential for camping out in the cold rain..... and besides they just look so PRETTY!

Grace, I grinned at the horses in blankets, but they're not used to winter weather. My Copenhagen has never worn a blanket, he stands with his tail to the wind in 20 below and lets the snow pile up on his back. He could go inside the barn for shelter if he chose to, but he never does. Poor King is just like a big dumb duck, he goes where ever Cope goes, even if it means outside in a blizzard.

If it's sunny and anywhere above 20F, he just goes out and rolls in the snow to cool off, LOL.

Elery's Chihuahua hates the cold too, and he's grown up in Michigan, but he still wants his coat and he comes inside and lies in front of my electric heater. I think he asked Santa for one of those coats like your Jack Russell has!

I'm glad you enjoyed the snow, I love it but I know I'm odd. It makes everything so clean and white and beautiful, though.

That's more snow than I've seen in my entire life! It looks like Canada to me, and I've only seen small amounts of snow there, since I've never been to Vancouver in the winter. The trees look amazing - that's something I've never personally experienced, and so you must have felt quite thrilled to have such a spectacle.

And here it is six days later.... temp outside is in the mid 70's and I'm about to go out and wash the car and give Attagirl (German Shepherd a bath on the driveway!!! Crazy!

Yes, I know I'm a soft touch with the horses! But they aren't really blankets (though I'd love blankets too) but really nifty waterproof "sheets". Thin and breathable, they really just keep them dry. They're handy to have if the horses have to stand tied out in the weather like they do when we camp and a cold rain comes up. My horse has a heavy enough coat that in the winter I call him an "Icelandic Moor Pony"!
