The answer to all of your questions is yes.

Macv, I would've just said "Yes" to my wife, then after coming to from the 2x4 hitting my head, I'd tell her that we have lots of choices on how to make this situation better.

Option: Remove new concrete in the small section, run pipe from downspout all the way past the retaining wall and then even further. Repour concrete.

Option: Change gutters to move Downspout over to the covered porch (where the retaining wall meets the porch), the downspout can be collected and piped away from doggy bathroom.

Option: Water collector just after the concrete, then pipe away... but this doesn't solve the once a year ice problem.

Personally, I think it's easier to get the gutter guy to slightly reslope and move the downspout, then have your landscaper pipe the downspout away. Replacing concrete just never looks good.

As with all construction errors the first step is to ask the contractor how he is going to fix it. Offering solutions suggests that you are willing to accept responsibility for the problem and expect to pay for the fix.

If he tears up the concrete, I suggest replacing it with pavers since rainwater will collect in this area even without a downspout.

This is a location where I would have used a round copper downspout or at least one with a darker paint finish.

We had a similar downspout on our rear patio and I had them move it. I agree, I would not leave it as it is, but I'm sure there's a solution.

And how do you plan to drain the ridiculous novel mini-roof under the eaves?

In the meantime, suggestions are most welcome so that we are informed decision makers when the solution is presented.

macv - yes, copper would have been lovely, but not sure that it was budget friendly. I'm not sure the other standard colors would have worked & didn't really think of painting.

worthy - double "ruh roh"! Uh, I guess when it is pouring down rain the little doggies will first experience a "waterfall" effect before they get to the grass. Or, we let then out through the screened porch or garage. crud.

bdpeck - I assume you are just a few hours north of us in Charlotte. I thought that ice would be more than just a once a year problem in the Upstate.

I'm having such a tough time wrapping my head around what our climate will be like. After 20 years in Houston, I'm sure it will be freezing cold to me, but then I have to tell myself that is just won't be like NJ winters.

Proving there's an upside in every bad design, a friend of mine got the downpayment for his first home with the insurance settlement for his wife's busted elbow, caused by slipping on an icy sidewalk created by a thoughtless downspout placement.

worthy - that doesn't cheer me up. I already have rotator cuff problems. I don't need another bum flipper.

Seriously, one should be aware of safety issues at all times, but I'm being particularly mindful since this is our retirement home. Broken hips in the elderly are a major contributor to overall decline.

But, in your inimitable, tongue-in-cheek way, you've validated my concerns as being worthy (haha) of elevating to the GC.

I should change my screen name, I'm actually just south in Fort Mill, SC. But no one knows where that is. We usually get one icy storm around Charlotte. Last year we had 3 real snowfalls (I'm from Indiana, Colorado and Connecticut, so I know what real snow is). But last year was the only time I saw the snow stick around for more than a day. Darned global warming.

Back on topic, just make sure that the GC tells you what the fix is before he/she does it... you never know when they're solution will be worse than the original problem.

To me, that looks like a real nice spot for a rain chain ending in a little bog garden.

But that is me.

The rooflet? in the plans or a contractor fix on the fly?
Because if your plans asked for extended soffits in that spot so the roof overhang shields the doorway better, then the fix is not so pleasing both visually and functionally.

alum gutters can be gotten in colors that resemble bright copper and lots of others

I was thinking a big rain barrel myself and agree that the shed roof over the door--under the eve/gutter look awkward...

Bog garden is a cool idea, but I don't think the dogs would appreciate it when doing their business.

I talked to the builder & he said that he planned to move the down spout to the right of the screened porch door once it gets installed. In the meantime, we can start talking to the landscaper and see what he plans for draining that area.

Do y'all think it will look OK when it gets the trim & is painted? If not, then I guess we should just have them take it off, now, before they go any further. We just thought the roof would give us a bit of shelter while we stand out there in drizzle or snow & "encourage" the dogs to "go".

Any particular rooflet there needs to at least fully cover the steps at the door. Unless you are having very small steps installed you are going to get wet while having to look at a non- functional protuberance every single time you walk up to or out of the door.

Its easily fixed, make it bigger. Both longer and wider.
then trim it out. If it comes out too far from the plane of the wall, then it gets posts.
