duplicate windows open from desktop shortcuts

I have Firefox 1.5.0.8 installed on my Dell 4600 with 2 accounts. When I click on a desktop shortcut on my account, only one window for that shortcut opens, but on my husbands account, using a desktop shortcut, 2 windows open for that shortcut. It doesn't matter if I double click, highlight/open, highlight/press enter.

I've gone through all Firefix options and can't find or have over looked any different setting between the accounts.

Thanks, but that is one of the things I have tried....tried using "current page"..."bookmark" ...it seems to only open the duplicate pages using a desktop bookmark (which my husband prefers.) If I use the "RUN" command, I only get one page.... It only happens on his account with the desktop shortcuts, I can navigate to his desktop from my account and the desktop shortcuts only open in one window. Not a big deal, just a bit annoying.

What steps are you taking to achieve this? Normally I click Start then All programs. Select and right click on the program that needs a desktop icon and in the pop up menu hover over 'Send to...' and a side flyout appears. Click 'Create desktop icon' Done. Then I rename the new desktop icon if it is not exactly what I want.

Was the restore point in blue and sort of inset with larger numbers? You have to use the restore dates that are there, not just any date. If you haven't created a restore point before this, create one now. However it will not help you with this because you cannot go back to a day before the restore point was created. If the program was not affected you can create new icons. Try clicking on the program in --start--all programs and see if it comes up. If it does then go out and click on start again. Go to your program and click once to highlight it then go to the little side page that has the icons and drag them to the desktop

You might try copying the URL and pasting it in your browser location bar. If it doesn't connect when you hit the enter key try deleting the part after the last / and press the enter key again. If it connects then you can try to find what your're lookn ing for there. If you do find it you can copy and paste it in the properties section of your shortcut. The shortcut would then work.

Ginny, AutoHotKey is a small, easy to learn, free programme that will do exactly what you require and much much more! You can simply edit one of the example files using Notepad and change it to suit your needs. If you make a mistake nothing gets harmed - just keep trying until it does what you want. It is even easier to use if you read the help file first because it explains everything in simple terms! I have made a file for you that starts Firefox and Word at the same time when you press WinKey and q together. Hi, Jean

If you are still experiencing the problem you might want to check if you have Firefox entered in the 'allusers' desktop setup (c:\documents and settings\allusers\desktop). If so, remove it from that folder, also each user should then delete their Firefox deskcut on their own desktop and recreate it. See if this helps.

I wonder if he has 2 instances of FF (2 different versions) installed somehow. He also may have a setting to run 2 instances.

Personally, if it was me, I would open FF, then click on file, new tab. Open as many new tabs as you have desktop shortcuts for, then copy the URL into each tab. Next, click on tools - options, general tab - where it says home page, click on use current. I have mine set with 10 pages to open. Saves me time.

That's an interesting option. This particular problem though occurs as FF starts up (before it even opens tabs) so I think you'd still have a dup task problem.

I use toolbar folders to open frequently used URLs without cluttering up desktop with deskcuts. I forgot to mention to also check any entries on the toolbar which start up FF tasks. These could also be culpable. I just disabled and re-enable all toolbar entries which use FF. So far so good. Funny this problem hasn't more documentation out there - it's really aggravating!

The duplicate windows are NOT from the Firefox shortcut on the desktop, they are from web page shortcuts that I drag and drop to the desktop. If I right click on the desktop and make a shortcut to the web page, I only get one window per shortcut. But using the drag and drop shortcut, I get 2 windows per shortcut.

Drag and drop shortcuts on "MY" account only open one window. Weird, but something he can live with, he just prefer drag and drop.....:)

What you describe is not quite the symptom I'm seeing: this phenom happens for me only if I start/switchuser from one user account on the system which has a Firefox window open into another account. Then, in the new user account, ANY Firefox shortcut will open duplicate windows. When I log off and return to the original user account, close the Firefox session(s) running there and then come back to the offending account I can click on any shortcut and it opens normally, no dups.

By George, I think we have it. I closed out Firefox on my account and guess what...only one window opens when I click on desktop shortcuts on his account.

Great! However, this is still a bug in Firefox as far as I am concerned, so I'll follow up in the Firefox community. As I said earlier I'm surprised not to see mention of the problem in the Firefox support forums.

On happier front, almost time to start digging up the potted rose bushes from the trench I buried them in last fall. Thank goodness I did so, since the winter has been bitterly cold here in NE :)

(Went back and read your earlier post.)

I deleted the shortcut from "allusers\desktop" and shortcuts open only one page even if I have Firefox open on my account. Thanks again.
