cookie problem?

i have read at a php bulletin board for a couple of years. this never happened until about a week ago. the only changes to my pc is nav updates and a windows update from 2 days ago. my os is vista 64 bit, custom built by local computer shop bought 4/2008. i have had no problems with the pc or the vista os. i use mozilla as my browser 3.0.15.

when i go to the bulletin board i click on view active topics. to the left of each thread is an icon that will go to the 1st unread post in the thread. over the past several days when i click on that icon it takes me to a post in that thread from 2-3 days ago. i was in a thread last night 12/11 at 8pm and it is taking me to a post from 12/9 at 11:30 am. there are 2 threads i tend to follow daily and several others that i read only when there is a new post in them. the only threads that have this problem are the 2 i read every day. this morning both threads took me to a post from 12/9 when i was in each last night. 3 other threads i have not been in for a few days had new posts and using the icon each of those correctly took me to the newest post!

in xp xpert (os i used at work) i was able to find a directory for cookies, not so for vista. i searched the c drive for cookie and cook but found no directory by that name! in tools, options, privacy i was able to see all my cookies. i found 1 for the website in question. when i clicked on that cookie it showed 4 things under it. i deleted the cookie hoping this will correct the problem.

since some threads i can go to the 1st new post correctly but in the 2 threads i read everyday it has been consistently going to a post from 2 days ago, i question if the problem is the cookie. if it knows where to go to for some threads why doesn't it know where to go for the other 2 threads?

is there anything i can do to fix this?

Try it in IE. See if you get the same results. It almost sounds more like a problem with the forum.

i just used ie and it went to the 1st unread post in 1 of the threads where this is a problem. while there was just 1 new post vs the several that would be normal, it did go to the right place using ie.

i hate ie and only use firefox.

i did the same in a mozilla browser immediately after ie and sure enough, mozilla failed to go to the 1st new post.

Jando, you are very lucky not to have problems with GW. I looked up the Suggestions&Comment Forum where I learned about all the changes, chaos, confusion, frustration caused by the new owner, iVillage reorganizing the site. I also have a Macbook Pro with Safari and this was not a pop up ad, it was a banner ad from the top that moved down to cover the links at the top and turned the entire page blue and would produce a new tab with a cookie ad in it, if you tried to navigate the page clicking on any part of the page to scroll or open a thread. I have not seen a problem today at all. I think there was something wrong with the ad itself. I already have my settings set for 'no pop up ads' which I don't have a problem with. And any 'moving' ads are usually 'disabled by disabling plug ins' in my browser preferences, but doing that didn't help in this case. I don't use Firefox. I can see stationary banner ads along the top and the right side of the screen, on GW but I ignore those.

I just ran ccleaner for the windows section - and did whatever their defaults were. Did I delete cookies I need? How do I get them back? And - at a more basic level- what are cookies? I wouldn't even have thought about selecting which ones or that this was an issue if I hadn't come hear and searched threads about ccleaner. The reason I started searching was because I did the ccleaner for windows. I wasn't sure I should do it for applications. It scared me and looked like it might delete a whole bunch of programs. Or does it just delete the irrelevant parts of these applications. Should I run ccleaner for applications? What should I do about the cookies I already erased. thanks. Lynn.

These are by far the best peanut butter cookies I have ever made, and I make a lot of cookies. I always get rave reviews when I serve them. They are really over the top. 2.5 cups all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 lb. (2 sticks) salted butter (I use Cabot only) 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1 cup granulated sugar (I use Florida Crystals Natural Sugar) 1 cup crunchy peanut butter (Jif), at room temp 2 large eggs 2 tsps. vanilla extract (suprisingly, CVS imitation vanilla is excellent) 1 cup roasted salted peanuts Preheat oven to 350. Grind peanuts in food processor until they resemble bread crumbs, about 14 pulses; set aside. Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper. Whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in medium bowl; set aside. Beat butter until creamy. Add sugars; beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes, scraping down bowl as necessary. Beat in peanut butter until fully incorporated and then eggs, one at a time, then vanilla. Gently stir dry ingredients into peanut butter mixture. Add ground peanuts; stir gently until just incorporated. Scoop into balls (I use cookie scoop) with about 1.5 Tbsps. dough per scoop and drop onto parchment about 2 inches apart. Press criss-cross design into the top of each ball using a fork dipped in cold water. Bake 10-12 mins until cookies are puffed and slightly brown along edges but not on top. Cookies will not look fully baked! Cool on sheet until set, about 5 minutes; transfer to wire rack to cool completely. The ground peanuts add a lot of flavor and surprisingly, do not add grittiness. I don't like peanuts in cookies as a rule, and I don't like crunchy peanut butter, but I love these cookies. When my mom makes them, she likes to make a glaze of powdered sugar with a little milk and a small amount of creamy peanut butter and drizzle it over the finished cooled cookies. If you make them, let me know how you like them.

In firefox under tools > options > privacy you can select 'remove indiuvidual cookies' and remove any cookies that you choose. Or use ccleaner and delete them all.

yeah bob414, i mentioned this in the post. i did it again for this site. when i removed it the other day it did not correct the problem.

Curious, how many days of history does your firefox settings save?

If mikie's suggestions doesn't help,you can also try to run Firefox in safemode. Not to be confused with WINDOWS Safemode. Firefox has it's own Safemode. See link below.

Also, if this doesn't resolve the issue. You can re-install Firefox without losing any personal profile folders such as your bookmarks etc.

if i start ff in safe mode what exactly am i supposed to do in safe mode? i read thru the link you gave but i don't understand why you suggest using ff safe mode.

Sorry! Should have explained more.
Get firefox into safe mode, then try to access the site that you want to see if it works. If it does, it could be an add-on or something that doesn't normally run while in safe mode. If that is the case, then you can troubleshoot from there.
Let's wait for mikie to answer your response, if you'd like. You may just need to delete some browsing history. Think that is what he is heading for.I'm curious myself!!!

I was just curious if set to one or two days and you don't visit that often for it to update.

30 seems too many though... to me.

Might search ; firefox history 'about:config' Defaults on history are terrible.
