Response -- found in this paper: http://pub.jki.bund.de/index.php/JKA/article/download/605/1515 Pertinent statements from above paper quoted below: "PNRSV and ApMV transmission by seed, pollen, on cutting implements and by root grafting from infected plants to healthy plants has been reported and the results showed that root grafting is involved in the natural spread of the virus in roses (Golino et al., 2005)." Note "...and the results showed that root grafting is involved in the natural spread of the virus in roses." This means that claims of transmission via "cutting implements" were dismissed because of root grafting. Root grafting would require that roses are planted very close together, and results in contact more intimate than occurs via pruning equipment. Also: "Because the only proven means of transmission of RMD in roses is through vegetative propagation of infected buds, scion or root stocks, the use of clean and virus-tested production material is essential to improve productivity in gardens." When you pull up references that say what you want to say and post them in isolation, you are neglecting to acknowledge that those statements were later further evaluated and discounted. The paper I cited is from 2010. Any rebuttal of the above must therefore be more recent to be taken seriously. :-/ ~Christopher

I think I may have to get some grape vines too! Your's look wonderful Don. ☺Successes Yes, deciding to join into the Farmer's market with Brenda, turned out to be great idea. I've met lots of new people and made some coin as well.....surely a win/win situation. Most of the plants made it through last winter, so that's always a plus. I think I only had one iris die, so that was pretty good. Most of the roses bloomed well. Whether the alfalfa tea that I gave them was the cause or not, I'm not sure, but I liked the end results either way.;0) The lilies bloomed really well this summer too. 'Red Dutch' and 'Fancy Crown' didn't do well this year. Fancy Crown just didn't come up at all, so I may have to replace it yet. Forever Blue iris bloomed in the beginning of September. The Pineapple Lily that I thought was rotten this spring and then just tossed into the veggie garden to be tilled under, I found growing in the peppers. So now, it's potted up and will grow happily in the living room for the winter. Got my first seeds from a Tet daylily 'Quest of Dreams'. And I also got a few seeds from Red Ribbons and a noid pink daylily too. I'm not sure why Tets are harder to set pods on, but hopefully I'll be able to get a few more next year. Failures Dahlia barely got blooming before frost. And the cannas never did bloom at all. The veggie garden didn't do overly well at all. I think that the poplars and spruce that we planted on the east side, are taking too much of the water and shading it for too long in the morning. So next spring, it will be time to re-evaluate where things will be going. There were quite a few daylilies that had spring sickness, and for some it extended into the summer as well. There are maybe 3 or 4 that I'm not sure if they will make it through the winter or not. Keeping my fingers crossed on those. So therefore, the amount of daylily blooms was a bit disappointing. Cabbage worms did a number on my ornamental cabbages....grrrr. All in all, it was a successful year for me in the garden. I added quite a few new perennials this year, so I'm quite excited to see how well they all do next year.☺

Hey beachlily, Heh, I did the same thing! I put in a request with the garden manager of our local Home Depot and Lowes, but I've not checked back. I went ahead and got the Bayer product with tebuconazole systemic. I found a stie on the web somewhere that stated it had moderate effectiveness against daylily rust. I couldn't find Heritage or Banner (yet.) I also found a study online that showed contact fungicides like Daconil - I think I got that name right- but contact fungicides applied after a mere three days of initial inoculation made the ultimate rust infection worse, and harder to control. You'd just be killing all the harmless natural fungal competition around, so that when the inevitable rust outbreak occurs and the spores burst to the outside of the infected plant, they find the garden to be completely open territory, an empty restaurant with every seat vacant and waiting. That's why I'm soaking my bareroots in bleach solution and giving them recovery time in new compost before I put them in my beds. Once I see rust, if I see rust, I'll mist with weak bleach/soap the effected foliage only. That should stop new spores from floating around as I remove the foliage. Then, I'll use systemics everywhere else. I will count on competition from the natural beneficial fungi to be my allies. The rust is an inside infection. The pustule I'd see would be the last sign of infection, rather like the gruesome scene in Alien. It lives in green, above ground foliage. A Japanese site, showed pictures of new healthy growth from a crown that had been stripped, dipped, and nipped to 1/2 inch. Lilies are a food crop there in Japan, and they take the whole rust issue very seriously. Be aware, I have no experience with this. My plans are distilled from research and talking to people with experience. I do love this kind of thing, though. I think I'll email FSN and ask for a bottle of this mystery Miracle Grow product with my Wedding Gown and Granny Smith. LOL! Do you think he'll be offended? :D:D:D

I use Microsoft Outlook here at home, and we use Microsoft Outlook at work. The problem you describe is as Anne suggested -- it's with your Internet Service Provider's mail servers. The only time I (or my husband) received duplicate mail downloads is when we're in Outlook here at home. As soon as I log onto the ISP's mail server (nearly every ISP has a way to log into your mailbox on the web if you're not at home, and you can certainly log in via the web even if you are at home), and start deleting the messages from the server, the problem stops. At work, I have never, ever received multiple downloads of the same message. I work for the state, and we used to have our own (Microsoft Exchange) mail servers. Now we're part of the statewide e-mail, so the servers are in the Microsoft domain. I was an Exchange administrator when we had our own servers, and I have administrative rights in the Microsoft domain. It's not Outlook that's causing the problem -- it is most definitely your ISP's mail servers.
