Genes: I'm totally sympathetic to your "trying to get comfortable with Android" statement. I received my Flytouch 3 in late November. Must have spent 1/2 hour just trying to figure out how to get the keyboard to appear on screen (no smartphone here either, just a "plain" cell).

I bought the tablet because Android seems to be the new kid on the block and I wanted to learn about it - I've certainly been doing that since my new toy arrived! Not only becoming familiar with this new OS, but the language associated with it: ROM, brick, launcher, etc.

Now I might even be able to understand some of those earlier PND threads where RC talked about doing the hack.

I posted over on the other thread you started about the new tablet I ordered myself for Christmas.

I have used linux for many many years as my primary OS and since android is a version of linux I get it pretty well.
But having said that each one has it's own different look and quirks.

I think you will come to like Android once you play with it a while. I'm probably at least as old as you guys and I have to say that Android was very intuitive for me. I got my first smartphone about 18 months ago and it was so much easier to figure out than trying to wade through all of those menus that seemed to be unique to each (non-smart) phone I had previously owned. Today I bought a Galaxy 10.1 at Costco with Android 3.1 (Honeycomb), and I am very pleased with its capabilities and ease of use. I debated between this and the iPad, but I ended up leaning towards the Samsung.

oh kudzu9 I am jealous! that is a very nice tablet. I am sure you will be extremely happy with it.

I know there are plenty of Apple fan boys around and they love their ipads, but there are plenty of us that would prefer NOT to have an ipad and prefer Android, I am one of them. I had the opportunity to have an ipad and I passed, not interested in the least. I know that seems so hard for the apple lovers to grasp.
I love linux but I don't go preaching it and trying to convert every one LOL.
To me Android has been very simple to use and even my husband has caught on very quickly.

the Vizio I just ordered is an 8" I was afraid the 10" might be to heavy for my hands, I at times get weak holding my 7" tablet. Darn arthritis!

I have looked at most of those over on China Grabber I think.
Some people that do reviews do get a free one to use to be able to do their reviews.

I have been looking at the Macbook Air for some time and now the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 has my interest. I have a Ipad touch and feel so limited with it - I like that it is pocket size.

Questions:
I want Flash and/or Adobe.
Do I need or can I put virus security on it.
Do I need a front and back camera.

Android comes with Flash and yes you can have Adobe
You can put antivirus on it if you wish there are several very good ones available, since Android is becoming so popular of course there are more bad guys trying to write malware for it so some people do want protection. You can get them free in the android market or from various app stores. Avast, AVG, the regulars you have for pc are now available for Android.

you do not need any cameras, the reason for cameras is usually so you can do live video chat calls. The cameras on the tablets are not very good not near as good as on smartphones. I wanted a camera so that I can scan those bar code scanner things that are on everything these days. The app to read them is free. If you look at this link for Lookout which is about the best antivirus for Android you will see other options there on the left side

this new archos will be one to watch in the 7" group which will have Android 3.2 and a high resolution screen for a very decent price

and the word is that the Archos is supposed to be able to update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 which would make it a real deal.

Sounds like a nice one, RC. My HP Touch Pad has 16GB of on-board memory, but there is no slot for using a SD flash card. I wish it had that ability.

That lack and the proprietary stance taken by Amazon with the Kindle Fire is one reason I'd stay away from that one. Of course, they want to sell you music and videos, and you're stuck getting apps only from them and not the Android Market.

The iPad is a beautiful machine, and I was sorely tempted, but I was concerned about having no Flash capability and being locked into the Apple market. I wasn't sure how limited I would feel, but I knew how much flexibility I would have with Android. While getting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was a bit of an indulgence, the one at Costco came with an instant rebate, and a free leather protective pouch. Another important factor was that Costco offers a second year of warranty for free on their tvs and computers, and I got a third year by paying for it with a Costco/Amex credit card. This saved me from having to buy a separate, extended warranty, so it's something to factor in if you are shopping for a tablet. You also have a 90-day period in which you can return almost any electronics item for a refund if you don't like it. (I'm not shilling for Costco: I have no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer. Their second year warranty saved me once when my big screen tv died in the 13th month and they did a $1000 repair for free.)

No SD card slot on the Galaxy can you get accessories at a lower price to have this option and/or other options. For that kind of money why the lack of ports or ram. What to go with 16 or 32 of rom? Toys R Us had a better price over Best Buy on the Galaxy some weeks back the Costco deal is awesome.

I Just wanted to post how nice this vizio is. I am very impressed with it and the quality of it. And the leather portfolio case it comes with is awesome. Very happy with my purchase. I've read there were some at walmart, doubt many are left anywhere now. But for the prices it has been listed for it sure is a great deal. This beats the fire all to heck. Especially since amazon has done so much to lock it down, their browser is getting bad reviews too.

The galaxy tab has a proprietary port and you can get a little plug-in adapter that converts it to a regular USB port, so I didn't see the need to go with higher than 16 GB, especially since I won't be storing multiple movies on it. With 16 GB, you can store a massive amount of photos, music, and ebooks. If you want to investigate this further, I believe several of the manufacturers have memory comparison/selection tools based on your particular intended uses of the tablet.

Kudzu, Good to know 16GB will be enough. I had been looking around and reading reviews on my questions, adapters and in the Android Market (new to android). What plug-in adapter did you go with? Did you put any security software on yours? Do you d/l from Avast or Android MRT? Does it matter? TY.

Does anyone know if Walmart sells the galaxy in store or just online.

Best to get from Android market, easier since all is in one place.
However getjar market has a lot of the pay apps for free so check there before buying any. Amazon market also has a lot to offer.
If you want security go with lookout it is the best.

I read some info vizio put out saying they do plan on sending an updateto 3.0 soon. Good news!! I added the new Regina 3d launcher which is very slick. Really a nice tablet.

I did some searching re security apps, and Lookout seems to have the most supporters. I have it on my Android phone. Now I notice that Avast has an app for Android.

yes they have had one out for a while now but from all I read Lookout is still the leader for the Android market. Pretty much all of the AV vendors are jumping on the Android bandwagon and many are jumping on the linux wagon too.

The adaptor I chose was the Samsung OEM one. It costs about $20-25. You can get others at Amazon that are cheaper (around $10)...just check the reviews first before selecting. As far as security, I intend to use Lookout; I've had it on my smartphone for a year and a half and it seems very reliable.
