'Copy/Paste' versus 'Copy here'

Please correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand, "coping" copies the intended data to the clipboard, and "pasting" copies what is on the clipboard and puts it where you direct.

Does "Copy here" go through these same steps?

It would seem, through a non-computer geek's eyes, that only one copying process would be needed, instead of two. Thus, this would be advantageous for organizing photos, for instance, where byte preservation might be paramount.

And, does the same answer apply in "Cut/Paste" versus "Move here"?

If you press and hold the right mouse button while dragging, a menu appears that lets you choose a specific action, such as copying here or move here.

Plain select and copy or cut .. pastes to the clipboard.

I guess I wasn't clear enough with my questions.

As I understand, "coping" copies the intended data to the clipboard, and "pasting" copies what is on the clipboard and puts it where you direct. So to achieve a pasting, the data is copied twice.

I already know the end results of "Copy here" and "Move here," and how to do that. But to achieve said results with Copy here or Move here, does the OS still use the clipboard? In other words, does it still copy the data twice, or just once?

I am interested because there is always the risk of loosing complete data, like with photo files, when being copied. So it would seem that if I do a lot of reorganizing of my photos, it would behoove me to use the method that copies a minimum amount of times. Am I being unnecessarily picky?

What I interpolate from you answer is that "Copy here" and "Move here" bypasses the clipboard. Is this true?

Without spending a fair bit of time, even an advanced PC user is not usually able to distinguish between advisable and inadvisable updates. An intermediate or beginning level user may not even understand the issues addressed in a particular update, much less have knowledge to determine a thoughtful course of action. Program update release decisions are made by people with the knowledge and understanding to know when changes should be pushed out. I leave those decisions to them and never give it another thought. Mistakes are made, yes, that's what the restore function is for. I rarely need to use it. Yes, and others have said, to each his own decision. But in doing so, don't fool yourself into thinking that you know more about it than you do and that you're accomplishing anything. If you resist the update a dozen times and then tire of the message and give it the go-ahead, you've really accomplished nothing but to delay what might have been an important update.

Is there a way to quickly bookmark - or copy/paste all open tabs?

Wow. These are great alternatives. I'm trying them all out. The Bookmark Current Tab Set is very handy - simple - and just what I want to do. I actually downloaded all three bookmark addons that Raven recommended. I'm experimenting with them to see where they place things. I was easily able to bookmark all open tabs from 3 different computers - so I can play around with it this weekend. Jean - I had no idea that there was also a simple drop down option. I just have to see where that puts the bookmarked tabs. Raven - are there any icons that will allow me to place those bookmark add-ons where I can access them with one click. Right now I'm going to the Bookmarks menu - clicking - then clicking the option. I know that's just one more step, but I figured there's likely to be an icon I can just put on my the top (can't believe I'm blanking on the name of that - not the tool bar per se but one of the lines about - like where the file - edit= view - history - bookmarks, tools - help menus are. I have various icons for other addons - like firefox showcase, adblock plus, Wot, Outwit. Is this a matter of whether the add-on develops include an icon to add? Or is there a way I can add one (I didn't see it in options for these addons and don't remember how I got the icons I already have). Thanks. Lynn.

Yes.........you can't put a http(url) link within the message area but you can put it in the Optional Link URL box. Let me put it in simple terms. All digital devices: Computers, copy/printing/scanner machines, microwaves, digital cameras, etc., have memory storage components to store data. In instances where the data are not personal, there's no harm, such as in the microwave. But in instances that stores personal information such as in the computers, digital cameras, cellular phones, etc., we need to be careful in how we dispose these computerized machines. Remember, even if we delete the data, it is still there. It doesn't disappear. It's just meant that the particular portion of the memory is allowed new data to override over it. Only then, the deleted data would be gone from the storage unit.

Simple to try a move here... or copy here with some text.

Then see if it paste's a second time also to say notepad,,,, or to here.

Yes, a simple solution that I could have thought of myeself...but no. I tried it, and found that "Move here" and "Copy here" do not copy to the clipboard.

I even put something on the clipboard first to make sure, and performing a Move here and Copy here did not erase it.

In Galaxy A 12, once a file is copied from one folder and then you choose another folder where you want to paste it, the pop-up box says "copy here" instead of "paste here."

I would say this is a mistake in the programming: using the work "copy" when what you mean is "paste," but it works OK. --Jim Miller

IMHO, Houzz should not allow new replies to threads that are more than 2 years old. Technology has certainly moved on, and if the OP has not already received a useful response then he/she isn't going to get one now.
