I have a GE Profile french door with ice in the drawer and filtered water dispensed inside the fridge. It is JUNK, don't buy one. At age 1 yr & five months the 3 cent door clips that hold the door closed cracked and don't hold the door shut. This little cheap piece of plastic is only available for $230.00 and is attached and sold with the entire door gasket. They are so difficult to remove and replace that repairmen tell owners that the entire door must be replaced costing hundreds more. I have velcro holding the door closed (sometimes). Next the LCD temp lights went on & off & on & fluttered in between then off most of the time. Soon followed by soft ice cream one day and rock hard two days later and back to soft. I went online and diagnosed the problem myself- failed motherboard. GE kindly said they'd GIVE me a motherboard but I would have to pay to install because it was out of warranty, OR I could have $400 toward another GE POS. Long story short I kept repeating back to her what she was telling me in a let me make sure I have this right kind of way. 'So, what you're telling me is despite the fact that hundreds and hundreds of inferior GE motherboards have failed, I will have to pay for not one but TWO service calls, miss work not one but two days, I have to pay for a service call for a tech to diagnose that it is in fact the motherboard, then he will leave and order it and then I have pay for a second service call when he comes back to install it. Is that what you are telling me? Her answer: 'or you can have $400 toward a new fridge'. Then she put me on hold and returned and agreed to pay for the install. The next week the repairman came with the motherboard based on my diagnosis and said I was expected to pay as GE's work order said nothing about GE paying for the repair!! This didn't seem to surprise the repairman; they must have submitted for reimbursement from GE and been paid as they did not bill me for the repair. The configuation of the french door is great; a side by side would be my last choice as the shelves are too narrow for me. I would never buy another GE fridge, ever.

I would stay away from Uline also. I have 2 clients who have a fridge behind their bars and Uline undercounter ice makers in their kitchens. They have well water with high sulphur content and they were unable to use ice makers in their bar fridge as they are unable to drink the water from the house water line. The undercounter ice makers roll out on wheels and hold a 5 gallon jug of bottled water. They fill it and roll it back under the counter. They are always having them repaired. If it's not the ice maker its the bar fridge. They have the repairman there at least 3 to 4 times a year and this has been going on for the last 11 years. I was there the day these units were installed and they have had trouble since the first week. This is a situation where the parents live in one house and the son lives next door. The repair service has been coming for so many years they have a deal worked out that they only pay for one service call and the son just pays parts and labor as the repairman has only to walk 400 feet to the son's house. This is how I ended up with the GE.

I have a side by side ge monogram. Tonight I noticed it is a little warm. It was 4 deg. C, and then went up to 7 deg. It is probably still getting warmer. I am not sure what happened. I hardly ever use it. The lights are on, everything looks fine, but it is starting to warm up. The fridge side SEEMS to be working fine. When I pushed the quick freeze for the refrigerator, the motor hummed right up immediately. I have had it for about 6 mos. I bought it from a friend. It is about 2-3 yrs. old. Thanks for any help! I thought it was worth a shot to see if there is something simple I can do to fix it, before I pay ge. :(

Earlier this year I had to get a new fridge and did a pretty exhaustive search. We had had two side-by-sides and I seriously looked into a French Door model, based on all the raves in this forum. I even visited fiends who had recently gotten a frenchdoor fridge. In the end, I opted for another side-by-side and I am so, so, very, very glad that I did. I adore the refrigerator I got, even more than I hoped I would. I bought the Electrolux EW26SS70IS 25.9 cubic ft side-by-side. A french-door format would not have worked for my family: too wide (need to open both doors most times), too little usable space, too unorganized a mosh-pit freezer dump space. A lot of this is lifestyle: a french door model with a big 'mosh pit' freezer (even one with a couple of drawers at the top) would have been an absolute nightmare for my family. I have two teenagers and we are heavy freezer users, typically going into the freezer 5 or 6 times a day. To have to bend over and paw through the mosh pit every time would have led to deep dissatisfaction. We LOVE the ability of the side-by-side to nicely file things away in compartments and adore the ability to have the things we reach for frequently at easy-access height. So usage plays a huge role. We also do not have many parties where we are storing pre-made trays. And the model I did buy, an Electrolux, is deep enough to store most trays anyway. I did not get a counter depth model: My kitchen is engineered so that a deep model appears to be counter-depth. This really works for us. The space you have to put it in is also a very big consideration. We like the depth: others would rather the shallow counter depth format. The final complaint about side-by-sides, that the veggies are in the bottom compartment, is true of the one I bought. But that is not a big issue for us. We do not store very many veggies (I mostly get them fresh and don't refrigerate too much). I don't mind the little bit of (well organized) bending that that drawer requires. The side-by-side was the right decision for us based on how we live, our needs, our capabilities and our uses for it. In the end, it was a lifestyle decision and it works for us. So we love it. But clearly it's not the right answer for everyone. So you need to think about how you will use it, what needs you have and the space you will put it in. Almost everytime I open mine I'm glad it's a side-by-side: but that's me.
