Vol. not loud enough on new monitor

I have yet another question about this new HP a6600f with HP w1707 widescreen monitor. I have the sound on the monitor adjusted as high as it will go. Instead of using the keyboard and mouse that came with the computer, I bought a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. They seem to be working fine, but even after I turned the volume up all the way on the keyboard, the sound that comes out of the monitor isn't very loud. With the volume all the way up on both the monitor and keyboard, it's just barely loud enough for like listening to music or watching a Youtube video if I'm sitting right here in front of it, and I can barely hear the other sounds the computer makes. The other computers I've had, if I adjusted the sound on the monitor all the way up, I had to keep the keyboard volume control much lower. If I turned both all the way up it was extremely loud. Is this normal for the new widescreen monitors or is the wireless keyboard the problem?

In windows xp there is a volume control which you can adjust by double clicking on the speaker icon in the systray (by the clock). If you have that adjustment in vista you may need to adjust it if you haven't already done so.

It's Vista, and I double clicked the speaker icon in the systray. It shows that the volume is all the way up.

Heather, I had followed that storm on the radar for a few hours as it traveled northward from the San Angelo, TX, area up through Palo Pinto/Young County and headed towards Wichita Falls. I was relieved that areas with big wildfires were getting some rain, and kind of relieved too that it seemed the storm would miss us because I know any Tstorm this time of year often brings hail. When I got the first text from DH, I did get up and look at the radar and the storm looked far S-SW of us and I wasn't at all concerned. Within minutes, something changed. Even when the threat seemed to be for both Gainesville south of us and Ardmore north of us, I wondered how it could miss us unless it had assumed a weird doughnut shape and we were stuck in the doughnut "hole". Yet, there we were with a Special Weather Statement (I think, it was a SWS because I was half asleep!) for Cooke County, TX, and a T-Storm warning west/northwest of us. They seemed to think it would miss us, or maybe they were just ignoring us! : ) Obviously, the storm didn't miss us at all and it kind of made me giggle (in a "laughing with you, not at you" sort of way) when we received the weather statement after the storm hit. I know that there are a million variables and odd things happen, and just count last night's "sudden" storm as one of them. We all joke about the forecasters being wrong, but I think we fail to give them full credit for all the times they're right. The only time I've ever really been frustrated with a poor forecast was in the spring of...um...probably 2008. It was in late April, I believe, or early May. We had a forecast low of 50. We went down to 32 degrees and tomato plants that were 2 to 3' tall froze completely to the ground. If a forecaster had been standing beside me in the frozen garden that day, I would have wanted to kick him or her in the shins! Now, if they'd remotely hinted at the chance of a freeze or frost, I would have tried to cover up the plants with floating row covers and frost blankets, which might or might not have saved the plants. However, with an overnight low of 50, no one expects frost or freeze damage. I just chalked it up to being one of those bizarre weather oddities you cannot explain. I figured it never, ever would happen again. The very next spring, the exact same thing happened to George in Tahlequah and he lost all his tomato plants. That had to have been in mid-April because he'd sent tomato seeds to some people on the forum, and they had grown tomatoes from them and were able to give him replacement tomato plants at the Spring Fling of the exact variety he'd lost, which was a family heirloom. So, it is now a twice-in-a-lifetime weather oddity. I know the NWS normally doesn't miss a forecast low by 18 degrees, so something bizarre must have happpened on those two nights at opposite ends of the state. Still, it is those odd "misses" that people remember, and not the other 350 or 360 days of the year when the forecasters get the forecast right. I guess that's human nature. OK, Zep. You've got the banana care nailed! A couple of ornamental (you don't want to eat the fruit, because it's full of seeds) varieties can survive in cold areas, like here in NY, with that kind of care. Edible varieies, around here, have to come inside for the winter. Now to the subject at hand: I got nowhere with the Creative link. I just got an error, HTTP 404 Not Found. When I clicked on, "Publisher: Creative", I got to a place where there were so many of these things that I didn't know which one was the right one. At the Gateway link, they asked for the serial number. (0016653113) When I gave them that, and clicked on a few other things that they told me to do, I got this instruction: "Insert System Restoration Kit Drivers CD in the System Restoration Kit Window." I found the System Restoration CD, and I guess there's really only one place I can insert it. On the disc itself, it says to reinstall some old Windows operating systems, start the PC with the disc inserted, and to install system software and drivers, insert the disc while the PC is on. So, I guess I start up the PC, and put the disc in. If I remember correctly, from the few times I have used any restorations, long ago, you restore to a certain date. A date, when I still had sound, was before I took the 'puter in for service. If I restore to a date like that, while restoring my sound, am I not also restoring the problems that prompted me to take the machine in for service, in the first place?

Dont you think that if they had left the machine alone it would still be fine today, other than the plastic squeak? I know as I said before that the old Calypsos had this type hanging system(and possibly GE) and I have heard the Calypso make the squeak and creak noise. As I told you before I hate to have something new with a "flaw" but I have also felt that sometimes I was too picky and would convince myself I needed to get it checked out only to be sicker(& madder)after service. A car for example, have a small rattle, carry in for service, they take half the car apart to fix it, then when you start home you no longer have that rattle, you have three more to go with it where they took things apart--now that is my luck--and I am thinking"Why on earth didnt I live with one small rattle but it is too late to back up then". Just go forward from here and I think I would try another one like you have. It seems like a great washer and you know that the LG made F/L didnt last you very long so maybe this next one will?. OH and about Sears using Electolux now instead of LG for front-loaders, I have always been told it depends on who bid the cheapest to build them. Not sure if that is true but I have heard that. Maybe you need to start looking for the 57 Lady Kenmore!

Hey lurker, Happy to help. There is a MUA calculation method you can use that satisfies code requirements in most jurisdictions that tells you how much cfm you need. This article explains it well. There is a myth on these forums that mechanical MUA is always required over a certain cfm, not true: http://m.startribune.com/the-makeup-air-myth-about-hood-fans-over-300-cfm-and-how-to-calculate-makeup-air/227199951/ In our case our blowers are extremely powerful and will definitely need mechanics MUA no matter what house. Your blower and the length and bends in your system, and assuming you are using a Prizer/bluestar hood with standard baffles to match your cfmr1400, you can assume 1350 cfm actual flow rate. So your calculation will be based off 1350 cfm. In my personal example, I had a 1000 cfm deficit, meaning my MUA system had to account for 1000 cfm. You can size a MUA in-line blower for this rate, or you can do what I did and head over to the Broan website and see what size damper you need. I forgot the result I got but I believe I oversized it because I wanted more air going through the vent than the leaks in my house. The result is I used two 10 inch dampers combining into a 14 inch duct, which vents out to the side of my house. For outside, I used an 18x18 vent grate with a MERV rated filter (I forget the rating). You can get them on amazon. I did leave a 14 inch section in the duct ready to remove if I wanted to add a noisy blower later. My MUA vents are located on either side of my range underneath the cabinets. This does two important things: 1) This method ensures that outside air is immediately captured by the hood and thus no outside unconditioned air burdening my central air 2) This method actually improves capture area by modifying the plume direction on the range. This has been documented in many hydraulic research papers, and confirmed in my application with a smoke test. Heavy smoke that is 1 ft+ outside the hood capture area actually directs back to the hood. Due to this phenomenon, I did not need to oversize my hood. I have a 48” range and 48” hood. Thanks zep516. I read that and tried it. It showed I had the volume up all the way. My HP flat but not widescreen 15" monitor on the older computer with XP had built-in speakers and they were plenty loud, as is the newer Compaq laptop with Vista. I wonder if this one is supposed to be like this or if it's defective. I maybe should go back to Best Buy and see how loud the display model is.

Go to HP's website and click on Support. There you can find an online chat that will connect you with a live person. Then you can explain your problem and get your questions answered (hopefully). I have found the online chat to be very good.

I tried the HP chat. That person said it was either the monitor speakers or the sound card in the computer, so I should just take the whole thing back to Best Buy and exchange it for another just like it. I REALLY would rather not do that since it's been such a pain to get the settings and software right on this one. He/she said they wouldn't want to repair a brand new one. I think later tonight when I have time I'll try hooking my old monitor up to this computer to see if it sounds normal. If so, then maybe it's just this monitor, but I don't know if they would replace just the monitor since I bought it as a bundle.

I plugged up the old monitor and it's loud, so I guess it's the new monitor, rather than the sound card in the new computer.

I took the new monitor back to Best Buy. The "geek" girl hooked it up to a computer. She couldn't get any sound to come out so she told me it doesn't have integrated speakers. I told her that I had used a wire with greenish/yellow ends going from the monitor to the computer. So she found one, plugged it in and turned on some music. I couldn't hear it over the noise of the store. She had me lean way in over the counter, and said "Can't you hear it?" I said "Yes, barely, but shouldn't it be louder than that?" She told me that she didn't think there was anything wrong with it, she just thought it was made to not be very loud. They let me exchange it for another like it and it's the same, half the volume or less of my older one. I guess HP wasn't selling enough external speakers so they thought by reducing the volume on the cheap monitors they'd sell some.

You're not the only one noticing poor speakers on that model. Bundle or not, all components should work. They switched out just the CPU for me when a better one was advertised for less the next day. No hassle they just did it. Sandy

I hope you get some satisfaction. I have HP computer and monitor (several years old), and because I just did not like the sound quality on the monitor speakers, I bought a Creative speaker system that includes a sub-woofer. Since I do like to listen to music, they were worth every penny. As I recall, I only paid about $59 for them.

I am not a music aficionado, but I do appreciate good sound. When I purchased this HP Vista system last year which included the speakers built into the 17" monitor I was deeply disappointed. They were terribly tinny. I unplugged them and dug out an old powered pair which perform much better. I was really surprised HP would produce such poor quality.
