Need centerpiece idea, thinking of ice

I posted this question on the entertaining forum, but I thought I would pick brains of you crafty folks, as well.

I volunteered to handle the June luncheon for my garden club. I need to provide individual favors and centerpieces for 9 or 10 tables. I've chosen as a theme "Have a cool summer." The favors will be paddle-style hand fans.

For centerpieces, I wanted to freeze blossoms in a cylinder of ice, maybe placing a small fern instead of a candle in a cavity of frozen distilled water. I've seen directions on HGTV's website for making a ice luminaries, but I'd like to know if anyone has tried this process with success.

I'd probably use 1/2-gallon cardboard milk containers for the outer mold, and 1-quart milk containers for the inner cavity. I'd set them on a small towel on a plate and hope they didn't melt too much during the 2-hour affair.

Am I crazy to even try? Maybe someone has another idea using ice and flowers. I'd rather not use candles since I want to emphasize COOL.

I would think about using the watergel crystals (and maybe some of the snow!) instead of dealing with the messy real ice. Here is a link for the gel and the snow:

Put the gels in clear glass rose bowls (to kind of look like icy balls or snowballs) then add in your fern. Set this on a clear plastic plate and scatter some snow on there. You might even get some of the snow spray and the ultra fine glitter and touch the ends of some of the fern fronds with that for an icier feeling. Some thing birch or other gathered twigs spray painted white and touched with some glitter would be pretty rising out of the center of the fern, too.

You could use an icy blue paint pen to write "Have a cool summer!" several times around each rose bowl.

Duchesse, I've seen Purpurea described as less than 3' and also 6'. Mine is in the ground about 10 months and gives no signs of being large unless it's just waiting to explode. It's a small 2x2 now. Whether this will be true when it's older I don't know, but it stayed leafless for 2 months this summer. It was the prettiest bunch of green sticks you ever want to see. Looked something like Form #2 (but smaller) in Vintage's Hybrid Tea chart. It has leafed out again but hasn't put on any size. Carol, re "bands that started dying back at the tips as soon as I took them out of the box. I'd cut them back below the dead portions but it didn't stop the die back and eventually they just died back to the soil.", mine didn't start that soon - only after repotting, and I'd had some roses for months. But the rest of what you say is exactly what has happened. It seems to me I did everything I usually had done except that I used some peat - oooohh, wait a minute. I used an oil absorbant recommended on the "Container Gardening Forum" is this mix and in another that I made for a Marie Daley that I was moving to a big pot from the ground. That rose died, too, and quickly (that mix had much more absorbant in it.) I wonder if that was the culprit. The bag even said uses include gardening. Well, I guess I need to dis-pot the surviving roses. Glad you asked, Carol. Maybe this is my answer. Ingrid, there may be thousands of roses, but probably 80-90% are already eliminated right off the top due to our locations. And now that I've fallen in love with Teas (thanks to the Australian ladies) I find that there aren't enough of them - that can be bought anyway. Of course, if I had planted Pink Pet and The Fairy instead of Marie Pavie and Clotilde Soupert, I could have used Blush Noisette. So our own choices quickly reduce the numbers from which we can choose. And, of course, there's the fact that we're just plain picky people. :)) Sandy, if I could only have one rose, I would also probably choose Mrs B R - unless the only spot I had was the small yard in front of my house. It would be a gorgeous bush out of place, I'm afraid. So I think I'm going to move LeVesuve to this center spot and put Anna Olivier in its old spot - hoping that neither one get as big as they can get or will at least tolerate a little nipping down the road. It still amazes me that Malcolm Manners prunes his Mrs B R Cants at the college down to short sticks every year. I call that whacking!!! I wish he had posted photos of those bushes after their spring growth. After everything I've read here it was a shock to see his after-pruning photos of one-year old plants. Thanks for the additional ideas! The caterer tells me that we shouldn't use the "horse stalls" to house the buffet stations (will restrict the line flow too much), so those areas will be open for us to decorate as well. I'm definitely going to keep searching out horse items - harness collars and hames as mentioned above would very cool! Also love the idea to use grapevine in the mix. And those articulated horses ... Yes, I'm definitely going to be ordering several of those guys! Annie, I'm unable to open the link (blocked from work computer), but the place card holders sound quite pricey from your description, so maybe it's for the best. ;-D

Thanks for the further suggestions. There is a lot more sun on the right end. Lilies do well. I think delphiniums would be fine there. On the shady left, I just had to cut down an overhanging branch due to the trunk cracking in a heavy snow, that may make the left end more sunny than it has been before. Hopefully my gold hostas will not get fried. I’m thinking about a monkshood in the shadier end too. I think the path idea, though it appeals to me, will be dependent on whether I can get at least 2 of the bushes behind it dug out. Though I love the way it looks, I can’t keep frosted Brunnera alive. I was slowly getting some to expand in the backyard, but the lack of snow cover seems to have done them in too. They would be up by now if they were alive. A plain green one in another bed is up. One silvery plant that came to mind is pulmonaria. That does well in one bed around a tree (same location where the silver Brunnera croaked). I have one I got in trade (so don’t know that name) that is almost all silver, with just a fine green edge, rather than spotted. Since I have not done much planting around the gate location recently, I don’t know how the drainage compares to the adjacent hosta bed at the left, which is at the base of a very slight slope. Since I have a lot of gold and purple, the easy route would be to just use Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola’, since I already know I can grow that. Though where I have it now gets a lot of sun, conditions for both areas would be comparable. At least for now, I can’t extend the stepping stones. It will be a while before I can kneel well. It was a marathon of kneeling to prepare the base, paver base, etc., and lay the stones 2 years ago. The gate color I’m keeping. I matched the original paint, which a friend told me was a very traditional shade for garden fence in France where this came from. I have an outdoor metal/wood bench on the patio which I will paint to match. It also goes well with my house trim.

I like both of these ideas. The faux snow might be beyond my skimpy budget. That's why I was going towards freezing water and flowers -- they're free. I like the glass blocks idea, and I've seen on this forum the beautiful ones that can be made. I could afford the $4 each, but would they look dramatic without a light inside? One winner at each table gets to take the centerpiece home, but I might still would consider glow-sticks, which would be cheaper than battery lights and cooler than a candle, but not last beyond the day of the party.

Anything else come to mind when I say COOL? Polar bears. Penguins. Icicles. Maybe it's because the Christmas season's just behind us, but I'm staying away from snowmen and other winter holiday themes. It'll be June and I live in the south. Each lady will get mints in a clear cellophane bag tied with a ribbon that indicates menu choice to the wait staff. I'm still open to other ideas for table decor or centerpieces.

For summer 'cool', I think lemon slices (or lime) and mint.
Maybe you could do something like the 'captured lemon vase' on this commercial site.

Hello;

I have done this a couple of ways. Get a large mixing bowl and put a smaller bowl inside of it and between the 2 put roses and ferns and water, Freeze and this makes a great fruit salad bowl. There is no reason why you could not put water in the middle with a floating candle or even place a candle in the middle without the water. IT WILL NEVER REACH THE ICE IN 2 HRS. They also have those pretend candles now and they flicker like real ones.

The other thing I did was a cylinder like a paint can and put in orange slices, greenery, cherries and freeze with a quart size Heninz 57 vinegar bottle in the middle then freeze, and put inside of the space a bottle of wine or once again a candle.

People love this too. Enjoy!

Go to GOOGLE and type in acrylic ice cubes...there's a slew of places you can get them wholesale priced..even lighted ones!! One place has bags of fake ice in chips-sold by the pound. You might get some ideas for using them. You might even consider using the clear plastic stemmed goblets, place 1 lighted ice cube in the bottom of the glass & top with the ice 'chips' The color should shine up thru all of the chips. Then tie a ribboned tag on the stem saying "Think Cool" or whatever saying you prefer-would make great favors for everyone! OR...get some fishbowls and make one for each table in a larger version of the above idea.
