Desperate!! - Shadows on Desktop

My computer screen is driving me crazy!!! I have been trying unsuccessfully for the past few weeks, to find a solution to the shading/shadows on my desktop. The best way that I can explain what it is doing, is by referring to the link below, which also offers a solution.... which didn't work for me!!!

I found another recommended solution was to "unlock" the Active Desktop Option.

Right click desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web

Then uncheck the "Lock Desktop Item"

This also didn't work.

I still was using IE 6 because I had earlier problems with IE 7. I d/l IE 7 and the screen remained the same.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? I should add, that at times, the shadowing becomes worse. It never disappears.... just is more difficult to view at different times.

If you should have a solution, please detail the steps to follow. I do not want to risk misunderstanding your directions.

Thank you for responding. I had forgotten to mention the Advanced Performance Settings. I tried checking and unchecking various options, particularly those dealing with shadings and shadows. None of them worked.

Do you have a particular option that I should try?

fwiw I've run startup repair on win7 a few times. It needs to be run back to back without trying to boot into windows, or it looses count and runs the same first run repair process each time. With my laptop, when startup repair finishes and restarts the computer, then I have to push my boot from cd key quickly again or its lost that ability to count. It would tell you in the reports run once, 2x or 3x. First run is I dont remb, 30 or 40 minutes for win7. Second run is maybe just 2 minutes. Third run would be the same quick, or slighly quicker than 2nd run. And it aways says something about 'startup repair can not repair this computer automatically' I assume it says this because nothing was wrong. I just wanted my partition tables/names microsoft style after using a 3rd party tool to resize partitions.

bodica, Very good advice. It is hard to remember to pause and enjoy the experience. I assume we will never do this again. This is supposed to the the "forever" house. :) Days when we make a lot of progress, we are on cloud nine. Days when we don't it hits us hard, but, we will get there and I know it will all be worth it. Analogous to having a baby... sdionnemoore, I love talking to people who are at the same point as us. I really love the SW Blonde strip and all the colors on it. Please post pictures as your paint goes up! I'd love to see them. Humble gold will be the main color in our house, but there are a lot of different colors as well. Here is a link to our blog if you are at all interested in seeing some of them. The granite on the island is different from the rest of the kitchen also. Considering painting the island. The lighter cabinet w/ the same dark granite is also in the master bathroom. Other bathrooms have lighter cabinet w/ the lighter granite.

Call an electrician and have floor outlets put in. Then get some end tables and a sofa table and put table lamps on them. And replace the bookshelves with a console table or credenza and put a lamp or two on it, too. You could also replace the ceiling fan with a dimmer-controlled chandelier, which should be hung much lower than you currently have it.

which shadows and shading ? I couldnt tell what you're talking about from looking at that pic.

On the Title Bars above here ??? where it says
Desperate!! - Shadows...etc

Those could be changed by searching your Help for 'Classic View' and also theres some additional settings if you were to right click the desktop and choose properties .. where you can also get some visual windows features settings.

You probably already found the 'Show Shadows Under Menus' option in Display Properties, Advanced Tab, Effects button....thought I'd mention it just in case.
