Toshiba Satellite Laptop Display Screen Gone!

Howdy. Someone dropped it on the floor and gave it to my SIL. The warranty expired in 2011. The glass is okay but the screen picture is mangled with stripes, blotches, etc. On one side there's a couple of inches of what might be considered usable screen. It allows one to see the curser so the screen can be turned off. On line I found a new display panel listed for this unit for $70. Does what I've said sound like it might just be in the display panel? On YouTube it didn't seem difficult to replace it. Any idea what a repair shop would charge? Thanks, Gene

I would suggest the first action is getting some prices on options. You have not offered a model number so none of us can go there.

How much is the replacement screen itself?
How much would a repair shop charge?
Is any of this worth the expense?
If you are not needing it as a laptop consider plugging in a regular monitor which means no repair bills and very likely considerably less expense overall.

Replacing the screen is not really that big a job. If you assume the price you paid for the computer was nothing then everything you do will not reduce that figure. So you could grab the bull by the horns and remove the damaged screen before buying the replacement. If it comes apart successfully as I am sure it will if you act carefully and confidently then would be the time to consider buying the new screen.

According to Best Buy new Toshibas can be had for $270 and up.

Replacement screens you need to Google for as only you know the model number.

New free standing monitors can be had for under $100 and up.

Good advice from owbist.

I'm not sure why you mention the warranty expiration, damage from misuse is usually not covered for any product.

Genes, Thanks, I have looked at refabs.. and there's still a lot of XP out there as well... don't know who would buy one unless like me they were considering it for parts - my latest interest in a new laptop (I mean lap not note, as I want at least a 15" screen) being driven by my careless handling of my 7 yo gateway (my under the table living room machine). Speaking of Gateway has that brand been taken over by ACER? I still see the brand out there, but no longer any advertisements..come to think of it TV is basically absent of any computer advertisements. Back to subject, I did a reply on a January thread on Windows 8 where I learned from a link provided by ragencajun the RetroUI Pro, make-over to run W8 as W7, and still have W8 underneath for when you're ready to use it. It isn't freeware for at $5 it is almost free, but... I see the subject Toshiba is available on-line form Toshiba for $399, and I also see a Toshiba near the same for the same price but it has a 500 GB HDD (not the 350GB) and an Intel not AMD. I recall ravencajun prefers AMD. Me, I can't complain with Intel, my old Gateway has a Celeron.

Thanks, pkponder! I called Toshiba as you advised and was told that the hardware was covered for 1 year. I have to find the receipt and then contact the warranty department on Monday to make arrangements to send it in to Toshiba. Thanks again.

She brought it over and the LCD was completely undamaged. In the corner, it was slightly separated from the frame. The frame was damaged a bit, bent so that the corner of the LCD would not "snap" into place. It would stay in place if we held it with our fingers, but wouldn't be secure. There's also a dent in the base by the keyboard (same corner when it's closed), but that's cosmetic. I turned it off, pried the corner of the frame a bit and snapped the LCD back into place. We both heard it snap in and I could feel it make the connection. To be on the safe side, we used some clear packing tape. You can certainly see the tape, and if you look from certain angles, you can see that it's not quite square, but all in all, it's in pretty good shape. When she called, I thought the repairs would be a couple of hundred dollars if I did them myself, so I'm VERY relieved that it was so easy to fix. And I'm also relieved that my daughter, a senior in high school, didn't insist that we needed to replace the entire case since it no longer looked new.

What model satellite??Might have access to disassembly for that model..Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor to make sure the rest of the laptop is functioning correctly???

Thanks for your comments. Its an L675D-S7052. Shortly after posting this note I ordered a new display panel for around $60. A YouTube segment showing removal and installation didn't appear extremely difficult. Yep, I didn't think dropping it on the floor would be covered by Toshiba but who knows what the original purchaser might have acquired. You're right that my SIL, or I, should have hooked it up to another screen. I guess by seeing a partial screen I just became a little optomistic. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Regards to all. Gene

Good luck tomorrow then. Be sure to report back about how easy it was because we always have lurkers reading these messages and just perhaps your experience might encourage another person to try doing a repair rather than pay to have something done.

With parts on hands, i did an older toshiba a couple of years ago and it took about a half hour..Pay attention to screw sizes, not all are the same length..Here are some disassembly instuction for that model
