AOL problem.........

My 9.0 AOL is not working right.....when I get on-line it takes 5 minutes to load a page, to look at mail ,anything takes 5 minutes or longer...right now I'm using Mozilla Firefox and I'm zipping along nicely but I need AOL to get certain pictures, mail...etc. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on??? Its been about 2 weeks like this !! Thank you, NJ

Have you cleaned out your cookies and done a disk Clean-up and also a defrag? You might change your AOL storage setting to the lowest then sign off AOL then change it back to your normal setting and sign on again. (look on the SETTINGS on the tool bar on top) These things might help.

In the eleven years I've been with aol, I've never ever gotten a real scam anything before. After thinking about it for a while, I remember I used to see those "Aol will NEVER request billing information" notices, but it's been forever since I've seen anything like that so it didn't really register that it might be a scam to me at first. But then I also do not use my Master Screen Name at all anymore and you have to be signed on under that to even just view your billing info and this email came to Remuda1 not my Master name. Anyway, it was all a little *phishy* so I'm very glad I investigated it further. I guess I've just gotten a little complacent since I've never had any trouble before. Usually, if I get an email from an unknown, I just send it straight to the "report spam" place so I really don't get much spam at all anymore. Just wanted to get the word out there. Thanks zep for the further explanation. Thanks Bernie for telling me how to find out for sure what she has so I can get the same thing. Raven, I imagine she would have remote access in her Windows XP as I do, right? I've considered remote access but would be a little afraid if things maybe got goofed up for her later on....and then us maybe both regretting it. Yep, side by side would be best. I imagine the remote access might make her even more nervous than us talking or working side by side. The other night she told me she had to go and get another Pepsi she was so nervous. She had been cut down to just one a day but I drove her to drinkin. I too can relate needin' another tall Pepsi on the rocks. Thanks all! Wish us luck. Sue

I have a friend on AOL....and she sent four emails (all the same) about 8 minutes apart. After the four came in rapid fire, there were no more. I notified my friend. I didn't know what was going on, so I told her to run a virus scan. It has not happened again. I am not sure if she found anything or not. I will be interested in following this thread to see if someone can come up with an answer. Larry

Terry - that was great - thanks. It completely did what I wanted to achieve. I can easily see if I've gotten new email on my other account without switching software, etc Now a new problem occurred yesterday - before I made those changes - and I have no idea what I may have done to cause it. probably something I did in experimenting with all these different email issues. I had my firefox set up to send links in emails (from my AOL address). But now I'm trying to send my mother a link (for the emergency microsoft update from 2 days ago) - and when I'm in Firefox (and the computer forum thread is open - or any web page is open) - and I go to File - then click send link - it brings up an email form (with my screen name in AOL as the sender - so that party's working) - but a whole mishigosh of info (the link info, perhaps) appears in the space where I should be entering the email address I'm sending it to. I have no idea why that is happening. If I cut and paste that info into the body of the email - and send it to myself to test it - it doesn't appear to be a link to get me to the webpage I want). Seems to me that the webpage link should be referred to in the subject line - and supplied in the body of the email - not some mess of information occuring in the send to line. I tried going to FF tools - applications- and mail to . I have several options to choose from - use AOL software (this appears twice - once with the AOL triangle with "default" in parentheses and once with what looks like a mail page form), and once it says use AOL mail. I think I've tried all three and it still doesn't work. And before I started trying to change my email settings this week, I think there was only 1 or 2 AOL options for mail application in Firefox. Okay - so now I checked all three. On use AOL mail, it gives me the gibberish (somehow related to the webpage I'm trying to send a link for) in the to: line. If I choose use AOL software (default) - with the mail form logo - it goes to AOL software - sets up the email correctly with the information about the link in the subject line - and the to: field blank for me to fill in the recipient. But it wants me to sign on or the send button is faded and I can't click it. If I choose use AOL software (with the AOL logo - not the email logo), it takes me to the AOL software page and says this file may not be supported by AOL. AOL will try to send it as a text file (and if I choose to try, it will tell me the file is too big). So I do I email somebody links? Thanks. Lynn.

Minnie.... Thank you for you advice....I actually don't know how to do any of those things you mentioned. My son is coming over today and he's a computer tec so he'll look at it later. I'll let you know what he said. T/Y again...N/J

take this in a nice way..get rid of aol..hard to believe so many people are still clinging to it, in spite of their bad bad press..theres other fish in the etc..

I have AOL and love the email system and except what they've done with the messge boards it meets all my needs. I like their new spam blockers too. A lot of folks don't like it but I enjoy it. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help once you get the kinks ironed out.

I have the free AOL and am impressed. It's less full of 'junk' than Yahoo, MSN. It's spam filters are incredible compared to the others. I only use it for shopping confirmation and that kind of thing, but I like it much better than Yahoo and MSN and Hotmail.
It's the free version and very straight-forward.

When I use Mozilla, I have to have Java Script and Java enabled to get my mail.
Otherwise I have those disabled for faster surfing.

Thank you all for your help....my son ran a program called Spybot and it didn't help. I'm thinking maybe I need to delete AOL and re-load it. Loren the reason I keep AOL is I use for my chatroom to talk to all of my friends. That chat room is exclusive to AOL....Nancy

I have AOL and when I compare to others ISP around me I am better off with AOL.
Why is it folks pic on AOL and always have.
AOL folks don't cut down other ISP.
Just a thought.

pinecone If you like AOL and are satisfied with it then great, but in most peoples opinion it is way over priced and very invasive and controlling from what I have read and heard. As an owner of a website that is updated every week AOL is my biggest head ache! When I get complaints that someone can't see my lastest updates it always comes from someone using AOL. Seems that AOL just cashe a page when you first visit it and just serves it backup to you the next time you visit the site. Re-freshing the page doesn't work and redoing settings in the browser the user has to change is the only solution, but why should I have to be the one that explains that to the AOL user and I have to all the time. My solution is to tell them to download Firefox and use it instead ;o)

I've had AOL now for 13 years. Never a problem. I get about six spam emails a week, if even that and that's spread across four different user accounts. My GMail account gets about 12 a day and I won't even bother counting Yahoo spam, it's completely out of control.

AOL is now free to anyone who already has cable or DSL services.

Jodi..I still have to pay for AOL but I have been on it for 8 years and even during the learning time I did better than some of my neighbors who have other ISP. No Cable in my pineforest YUK YUK!!

msm84...I am sorry you have the problem, guess you should look at it as part of doing business, like McDonalds did when they had to go to paper to hold their products and the Asian carry out was allowed to use Styrofoam. I will keep your statements as I plan on doing a web site. As soon as I learn what to do to upload and download..oh that is another story........
