In case any one needs a little lift, here is a picture of our newest fur-baby. She is a 10 week-old mini doxie. Our little Sophie was lost without her best friend, so we brought this little one into our lives.

I just say goodnight to tender plants. Gardening never really stops here -- it is easier to garden in cold than in summer's heat and humidity. Light frost expected this week. I'll still be planting spring bulbs in December after weeks of chill in the fridge, the ground doesn't freeze. We'll have some real cold nights before winter is done, but the days are generally well above freezing and sunny after a cold night. The upper lawn beds need lots of attention. Not seen from the road like the island beds are, I haven't tried before to make them as visually interesting, just attractive to butterflies. Edges everywhere need attention; centipede grass crawled into every bed. Cameron, I have to 'speriment with V. bonariensis, perennial here. Insects took out some in the very dry summer. Some has persisted. What seems to work well for me is V. bonariensis in spring and summer and Salvia leucantha for fall, cutting the verbena back late summer. I hope everybody will find a system to use pics to their best advantage in planning. Now that I have them in folders by months, I'm going back and moving some into folders by location. I have to get out and take last-minute cuttings of tender plants. There's no guarantee that stachytarpheta and pentas will return if the winter is colder than usual. I kind of promised the butterflies there will be more fav nectar plants next year. I dug my one pineapple sage plant, which could be kind of iffy, too and took additional cuttings. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I have survived the family birthday party so far. My sister doesn't cook, but brought my favorite corned beef sandwiches from Shapiro's in Indy. Delicious! My sister in law couldn't decide on white or chocolate cake so she brought both. It was really strange being banned from my own kitchen. There were the usual gag gifts for turning 50. My sister was really disappointed when I was glad that she got me an old fashioned hand fan. It will be put to good use, if you know what I mean. I still have another party to get through this evening with some friends that are coming over. They won't let me do any of the cooking either. I am starting to go through cooking withdrawal. I have gotten lots and lots of puppy kisses today. Linda

Amber's Jack Russell has seizures and they are pretty frequent. He has been to Purdue for treatment and to so many vet's. He is on I think 3 medications and an herbal something she got from the vet. The herbal stuff has helped but he may have a seizure once a week. You never know when it will happen. It is bad to see and I have seen him have terrible ones and one right after another. I have held him while he was having them and we are hurrying to the vet's. Sometimes it is weather related, like a storm moving in. Your little Gracie is so sweet I wish the best for her. Sue

I did see a news clip about the stow-away Gracie Mae. Amazing story. Sophie did have to go in and get even more fluids over the weekend, but she is doing much better now. She started eating again Monday and hasn't stopped yet. Sophie seems so content now. We didn't get Gracie until Sunday evening. Gracie was with another family before us, but due to the massive flooding in our area, they could not keep her. I felt so sorry for them. A couple more pictures, if you can stand them.

Linda, your new puppy is beautiful! I love her shiny coat and sweet, happy eyes. May she bring you much joy and ease the ache in your heart from losing Sophie's best buddy.

She is so cute. I want a puppy!!!!

I cried again today when I saw that d*#n Pedigree commercial about not all puppies get adopted. The one who didn't get adopted looks just like my beloved Chowder Mae.
