a walk around the 'hood

19 years ago

Hi,

In the spirit of the walking thread I thought I'd post a "walk" around my homestead. This is a collection and not a single walk.

Take yoko for a walk? Yah, the human is me.

{{gwi:1468074}}

Yoko loves to watch the birds! Love to watch the swallows zoom around the yard catching every single bug that can fly. No mosquitos!

{{gwi:1468075}}

Best place to take a walk is down the driveway.

{{gwi:1468076}}

Sometimes a deer watches us. This guy is still in velvet and safe. Watch out when he goes into rut... he gets a little fiesty.

{{gwi:1468077}}

Some weeds are for looking at.

{{gwi:1468078}}

I grow christmas trees as a hobby. Sales were slower then expected this year. One 400 tree order turned into a 40 tree order... so it goes.

{{gwi:1468079}}

Lots of berries of all types. I've tried to plant tame berry bushes and they have always died. To rub salt in the wound they grow wild everywhere. One stawberry patch is probably 3-4 acres in size... lots of berries! These are black raspberries... my favorite!

{{gwi:1468080}}

Of course I'm famous for my bunnies. This has been a GW fave in the past.

{{gwi:1129773}}

Spike assured me this young red-tailed hawk is probably not eating a bunny.

{{gwi:1468081}}

There is always something odd walking across the lawn.

{{gwi:1468082}}

Upon closer inspection we see a volunteer for the soup pot! I let him go to grow up some... one of these days he is gonna be snapping turtle soup.

{{gwi:1468083}}

My garden spot.

{{gwi:356986}}

More birds! Ten years ago we didn't have turkey around here and now they are everywhere.

{{gwi:1439353}}

This is NOT Yoko begging to get in... note the unique stripes down her back! Friendly and no stink but a wild animal none the less.

{{gwi:1468084}}

Well... that is my homestead or at least a few pictures. At the moment it is cold and snowing. Not really fit for a walk today so I stuck ya'll with some old pics.

I don't winter protect anything. I am much to lazy a gardener to deal with roses that can not make it thru the winter without extra fuss. Around the front porch here I have two climbers, one of which is Westerland. Further down I have a Don Juan. In that patio picture I have three small flowered roses up against the house, the roses towards the back under the last window are Charles Aznavour floribundas. The little white flowered roses are not really climbers excect for Secret Garden Musk Climber, which is not cane hardy in my zone. It only keeps about 5 feet of cane and the tips die back. Considering that this rose should not even survive in my zone, I figgure thats pretty good. But the small white blooms you see against the house are both Darlows Enigma and The Gift, planted side by side and growing together. I like the way they look against the house.

Bill, let me know when you remember....I'll try to keep lurking tonight! zinfanatic--DH said it might be a wash with regards to the price difference between taking the hood down and tiling the enitre space vs tiling around the hood (making all the cuts in the tile to fit around the hood ups the labor cost). Also, if you like Zin, we've had Ravenswood Old Vines--Lodi, 7 Deadly Zins, and Bramblewood Old Vines recently. We thought all 3 were all pretty nice (Bramblewood had strong chocolate overtones if you like that!). We also had Gnarly Head (?) last night at my BIL's home and that was neat, too.

Carol - thanks for the tip on the fertilizing pots - will try fertilizing a bit more often then maybe my pots will look more like yours. Jim - that bed is a real eye-catcher!!!!! I just love putting Marigolds in my beds, unfortunately the snails love them as well!!! Babara - your comment actually made me blush - thanks Wow ziyakr, that curved bed must look amazing when everything is in bloom! I really like the curves - it softens everything and a garden seems to flow more (if you know what I mean). I have a close-up of Westerland on this post - http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3194210/blooms-in-clusters and here http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3153116/blooms-since-june-1-us-to-w Sharlene

Thank you for video that shows roses before winter. What planting zone are you in, and how cold the temp. was when the video was taken? I love that large bush with pink blooms next to your deck & house. What's the name of that bush? Also what's the name of the bush with yellow blooms? Thank you. I'm looking for roses that can bloom LATE IN SEASON, right before winter for Thanksgiving bouquet. My zone is 5a, and this year it got too cold a week earlier. It will be 13 F tonight 11/19/22, so killing frost comes a week earlier this year.

That IS a great shot of the hawk, they are beautiful birds. However, my favorite has always been the baby bunny picture, it's the one I think of whenever I think of you.

I also like the fact that you left the swallows' nest. I love the swallows and they eat their weight in mosquitos every day. On the farm they follow me down the rows of the garden when I'm picking or hoeing, scooping up whatever bugs I can stir up for them. They come within inches of me, like tiny feathered dive bombers, I don't scare them a bit.

What a great walk, Michael and Lyra, thank you. I think I could do without sharing the space with the skunk, though.

Love your photos Michael and Lyra....especially the one of the little bunny. I would be out all day trying to pick them up and pet them if I had those in my yard! I presume they are wild? My daughter who lives in a Calgary suburb has many little half tame black squirrels running around outside her house. I think I enjoyed watching them more than she did. :-)

I'm confused. Why isn't this on the WFD thread?

Who took your picture?

And which 'Spike' gave you the advice?
