Cookie Trojan Programs ??

Anyone ever hear about a Cookie Trojan Program ??

This was posted to a website I visit.

I called the redirection a "worm" but the bank security manager said this problem was a "cookie trojan"(CT) program. He stated the CT can be set on any computer at any time by injecting the CT program into the download stream of bits that is transmitted onto any computer during any normal webpage request and there is no known cure to stop the CT program. He also stated there is not any anti-virus or firewall program made that will stop a CT program from entering into the data bit stream.

He also stated that any good known firewall will easly catch this CT program. He also stated that a redirect program can be set in other ways but firewalls are 100% effective at stopping the redirection program no matter what method is used to deploy the CT program.

To remove a CT program, all one has to do is reset there cookie casch, ie; clear the casch, then warm reboot the PC.

He also stated that a person needs to be running a admin user and a web surfing user with a firewall and that you need to clean up a PC at least once per-week (clean out the cookies, temp webpages, history, form data, and passwords) if not sooner. Never ever let a banking website remember your user name or password for you.

Always type in the username and password on each webpage visit!!!

I am always a little bit leery of security and IT managers comments regarding systems. In most cases they are managers with no or decayed hands-on experience. I prefer to listen to those in the trenches who are current in matters that effect users.

That being said it sounds like he is referring to the common redirect scam regardless of what it is called. Pooh I know you are aware of what I mean, but for the benefit of others who might not, a trojan is covertly installed on your system via the Internet. It may come piggybacked in an e-mail, a jpeg or a "free" download to cite a few examples. When in place this trojan will redirect a legitimate use to a fraudulent web page. For example, let's say the trojan is dedicated to Chase Bank VISA. You type in the URL and the trojan will direct the user to the fraudulent site. The site bears all the logos, legalese and services one is accustom to. You type in your user name and password, and the information is channeled to the bad guys. This allows them total access to your VISA information. You never know anything has happened until you receive your next statement.

The main defenses against this type of attack is to avoid unsolicited e-mails, do not open unfamiliar attachments and research "free" downloads before installing. Of course, regular maintenance including cookie deletion is a must.

I did some searching and everything I found
indicated that a true cookie trojan is a hoax.
It would have to be a cookie or a trojan, not both.

I rarely empty cookies and temp files.
(I don't recommend this course of action).

yes you are fine, and yes you can have several browsers with no problem, you can even have more than one type open at the same time if you need to. When you get firefox it will ask if you want to make it your default you can say no and leave your Ie default if you prefer, it will also ask if you want it to import your favorites list from Ie say yes to that and any other things it ask to import and it will then set up your firefox with all the same faves as you have on Ie, will not touch the Ie settings at all will just copy it all over for you. To use firefox once installed all you do is click on the firefox icon on your desktop and it will open up a browser window just like you do with IE. Your post reminds me how out of touch I have become with this kind of problem (and I am just posting about a possible win install too). However like you, I remember some things from my past and I suspect that your problem is probably a simple fix. At least for the time being, I think reinstalling windows is extreme and since you have a second working computer you should wait for some of these other clever folks to help. I'll bet there is some utility to help with this but if not, there must be a way to mnually link particular extensions to specific programs, and for the time being you would probably only need to make a couple of links (but don't ask me how).

I have nothing to show that the Dropper was false or positive except for the Malwarebytes results. It identified that a Registry key was infected -- ..amazon kindle for pc (Trojan. Dropper). Two files infected: ...\Downloads\KindleForPC - installer.exe (Trojan.Dropper) and the \Kindle For PC\uninstall.exe (Trojan.Dropper). As I understand the process, a trojan can be a conduit for further viruses and problems. I can in no way debate that the Dropper was/was not a real problem but is is strange that in our relatively small population of Gardenweb users as well as one who posted on the Malwarebytes site got the same, perhaps identicsal, result. Anyway, my problem appears to have gone away and the Kindle routine seems to be okay.
