At one point the argument was that for monochrome printing lasers were cheaper per page than ink jets. To some degree that difference has shrunk in recent years although I still think that lasers print faster with better quality. Some inkjets do better at text than photos.

I've had my current Brother monochrome laser for 3+ years. Set-up was a snap and I've had no problems. My model is an HL 2040. I don't believe they make this one any more.

Staples has a Brother HL 2240 monochrome laser on their web site with a $50 instant rebate that brings the cost down to $69.98.

Prior to purchasing the Brother, I had an HP monochrome laser for at least 15 years. During that time it performed beautifully. It was only when I got a new XP computer that the printer finally dug in its heels and said "I don't like this OP and I'm not gonna play nice". I searched for solutions and finally threw in the towel and bought the Brother.

I went with the Brother as a replacement because it was cheaper than a seemingly comparable HP and because it received good reviews. I haven't been sorry. - June

You might want to look through the reviews at Amazon before deciding which particular laser (or other printer) to buy. Just type in a general term like "laser printer" to bring up a lot of choices, and then you can winnow them down by looking at those in your price range, and then looking to see how many of them have a number of reviews that rate them highly. The Brother HL 2240 has only one reviewer and it gets only 3 out of 5 stars, while the HL 2140, which has been around longer has over 250 reviews and the majority of them are quite high...

I didn;t even think of this before-- I have a HP notebook. It does not have a cd/dvd slot/ Will I be abe to load the initial input to make the computer recognize the printer?? Oh, I do want a wireless printer. Thanks all.

I have a netbook that also lacks a CD/DVD drive. I just go to another computer and copy what's on the installation disc to a thumb drive. Then I plug the thumb drive into the notebook, navigate to the files there, and install the software that way.

You download the appropriate driver from the manufacturer and use that instead.

Just about everybody makes wireless printers in a variety of price ranges.

Mike's way is easiest if all you need is the driver. However, a lot of printers come with packaged software programs to provide additional capabilities, and they can be pretty large, so that's why I suggested the method I described.

If you're just printing B&W, Brother Laser is hard to beat. I have a HL-1240 that's almost ten years old. Toner cartridge I put in it in July of 2004 is still putting out. Been through three of my own computers since first use and did some moon-lighting at remote locations, too. Several generations obsolete at this point but the new ones look an awful lot like it....and they're still cheap.

i bought a combo laser / scanner / fax .. cheaper than stand alone laser printer at best buy on sale... but it came with a darn demo toner cartridge only good supposely for 30 or so pages of text. Replacement toner cartridge cost was almost as much as the whole thing cost initially.

Two years with Brother monochrome laser printer. (HL-2270DW) Fast plus duplex plus wireless....cost ten bucks more than replacement cartridge for my old Brother laser that was still operating flawlessly after eight years. Previous cartridge for which I was seeking replacement lasted 5 years with no jams, smears, or deterioration. Much superior -- and cheaper -- than ink-jet.

I do have separate printer for photos.

I have the same model Brother laser that asolo has and love it. A toner cartridge for it costs about half the cost of an hp black ink cartridge at Amazon.com and lasts a LOT longer. Mikie reminds me that I paid $79 for my wife's Canon inkjet and a full set of replacement ink cartridges costs $81. I use her printer for photos and mine is wireless so she can print on it from her computer if she has a lot of black and white printing to do.

I too have a Brother Laser printer and have had no probs..I also have an HP netbook for which I purchased an external dvd drive which is usb powered and can be used with any laptop/computer..they are not that expensive either

Lasers are supposed to better tolerate longer periods of inactivity. My inkjet not so much.
