Advice on Laser Printers

I posted a message a few weeks ago about my old Okipage 12i LED laser printer. It seems to have died on me. The print was messing up, and I was unable to fix it. I believe it might be the drum, but I can't be certain.

I purchased it used for $25.00, and got about three years and two toner cartridges worth of use out of it. After seeing that a replacement drum costs upwards of $140.00, I decided to shop for a new printer. When comparing my old printer to current models, I noticed that the 12i specified "LED Laser" and the newer models don't mention "LED". While I know what an LED is, I wonder, are they all LED, or is there something special about this printer? If there is something special, might it be worth fixing as opposed to buying a new one, or is this an outdated technology?

I've done some shopping, and I'm looking at the following models:

BROTHER HL-2140 ($70) 23 ppm, 2400 x 600 dpi

HP 4050-TN (used $125) 17 ppm, 1200 x 1200 dpi

SAMSUNG CLP-315 COLOR, (Reg $199 on sale $149 at OfficeMax.com), 17 ppm, 2400 x 600 DPI

Looking for any advice or repairing the old one or getting a new one. Open to suggestions on other models, especially a good deal! Of primary interest to me is something that will last and low toner-per-page cost. I already have an inkjet MultiFunction, so I don't need the other bells and whistles. If I could get a good price for my old All-in-1, I would get a color laser with Multi-function, but I know I can't, so I won't bother. Color would be nice, but not a necessity.

OKI Electric developed its LED printhead technology for electro-photographic printing for reliable printing in various applications.

Laser systems rely on elaborate combinations of rotating mirrors and lenses that must remain in alignment through use. The laser scans from one end of a line to another, then zig-zags down to the next line.

LED technology uses a Light Emitting Diode printhead as a light source within the imaging device. Unlike laser systems, the LED printhead is solid-state and has no moving parts. The LED bar pulse-flashes across the entire page width and creates the image on the print drum as it moves down.

OKI also has a straight-line paper path that's less susceptible to jams when feeding heavy stock, envelopes or labels.

That's the difference, that's a very good printer you have there print quality and reliability and can be used in a work group more then 1 person using it so it is built to last.

Did you like the printer when it worked if so fix it and it will probably out last the the ones you listed..

Lets see what others say, I currently use a brother all in one model MFC 7420 and happy with it.

I have my own personal boycott against HP, as I have had 3 HP peripherals now that couldn't be updated when changing my OS. The latest was an HP laser printer. So that would be my suggestion to keep in mind when considering HP.

I absolutely love my Xerox 8560. It doesn't use powder type toner it's a solid ink cartridge. Extremely nice detail and the print has a glossy look to it on the paper.

This is my 2nd Xerox, I had a very early b&w Xerox laser that lasted me years and years. If I get anywhere near that out of the 8560, I'll be very pleased.

I have the P1006 and it does this when I let it run out of paper. The print jobs get stuck in the queue and won't print. I usually unplug the unit for a little while, reconnect and it starts up again on reboot. It's a great printer, but this glitch is a pain in the neck. I hope this link will help. Gee, I sorry if I was feeling "too good" about my purchase. But, I say if you haven't put your hands on one your experience with his machine is less than mine. At least you have spared me from someone buying one of these because "Jerry said" is worth $400. My reference to that number is what I recall reading in the add, recalling how much these machines costs just a couple of years ago. This machine came without any reference to Windows 8, has the good old fashioned glossy documentation makes me think it was "designed for" sale in a higher priced market.. If one has a home network and want to share a printer, they might be happier (at an additional cost of at least $50) if the printer is accessed off of Ethernet or WiFi. On the W8, I moved forward first on my W8 notebook to access that printer. With the great help from this site I used the information to set the printer as "shared" on the XP host computer. I then followed the directions to use the W8 Control Panel to open the network (hey, this was all looking familiar) and bingo there I found my XP machine and thus the Printer. I doubled clicked the Canon printer and W8 started to look for a driver.... I'll estimate 3 or 4 minutes later I got a failure to find a driver. The next step upon this type failure indicated to try to install the printer in W8 (W7 really specified) and that failed too. I went to the Canon web site and downloaded a driver for W8. Now ready I went back to the W8 Control Panel and opened the network and this time I couldn't find even the XP machine, never mind the printer. It was after 11 PM by that time so I decided to try again in the morning -yet to be accomplished. But, before bed I decided to look at the DVD that came with the printer. it has no indication of what OS systems it supported, but I put it in the W8 and loaded both the driver and the software to operate the scanner (which by the way is a low resolution color scanner.. low resolution for B&W too, not a picture quality scanner which is the case for all home machines I have owned). I'm yet to try again to gain access from the W8 and W7 computers. Now on my second cup of coffee, and will try to access the XP machine when I get energetic enough to go to the other room and turn it on.

I had my CR2015 buying guide beside my computer. i see you are looking for the regular printers rather than all in one. CR likes three Brothers. I imagine the hl3170 replaces the 3140 at $280. i see that the big difference between ink jet and lazers are the doubled ink/month costs based on some average of pages printed. Perhaps your child is above that. There are three higher rated printers but the first two are 3x and 2x more expensive for ink. The samsung color xpress c1810w is in 3rd place with similar ink and machine cost to the Brother. BTW, the only laser check rated model was the ink hog Dell C1660w. I see that you could get an inkjet with half the Brother ink costs (HP officeJet Pro 251dw. I also see that my own Canon inkjet probably uses ink costing like the Brother, so I should probably get another machine if I wanted to save ink costs.

That's a monochrome printer I think - just prints in black and white. So anything color is going to come out grey. If it wasn't for that (and this is what I had written before I realized your printer is B&W) . . . Many printer dialog boxes have a checkbox for Black & White, which should be unchecked, or the green will indeed come out grey. Check for that in both your software's print dialog box, and the printer's preferences/properties. And usually there is also a setting in the printer preferences to print darker or lighter.

I have an HL-5140 for a few years now and it has been very reliable and toner is very inexpensive. I chose that because I wanted to be able to print from DOS as well as windows and haven't had any problems except when I bought a nonBrother ink cartridge. Only problem is that it feeds the envelopes a little bit off but I've learned to work with it. Rare jams are easy to clear out and smart enough to redo pages jammed.
