Problem with Microsoft Security Essentials update

I downloaded and installed MSE, then started the first update. The progress bar (green horizontally moving squares) moved only fourth of its distance then stalled. It doesn't move further. Microsoft window asked me to send an error report, which I did. It said I have a software problem. What could be my problem? Should I try removing MSE and reinstalling it?

That's what I would do rather than fooling around trying to get it straightened out. You can waste lots of time that way.

what antivirus program did you have on it before and how did you go about removing it prior to trying the install of the MSE? an incomplete removal is the usual cause for that kind of problem. If you did not use a dedicated removal tool for the specific AV program you had then you will need to do that.

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

Please read another post on this page titled "How to remove Trend Micro". I responded to your earlier post in that, and have been hoping you would respond. Yes, I did use a tool but don't know if I got far enough. What to do now?

Your other thread indicates you have nothing showing for Trend Micro when looking in the 'Program Files' using Windows Explorer. Is that right? If that is the case it would be very unlikely there are remnants running or causing issues.

Did you do as you suggested in your original post here and try to remove and re-install MS Essentials? What happened?

Correct, I have nothing showing in the files for Trends (at least insofar as I know how to access "all" the files).

No, I have not yet tried to remove and reinstall MSE. Can I remove MSE using "add/remove" or do I need some special tool?

Well I would use the Add/Remove to get rid of it if it shows there. Then I would run Ccleaner (linked below) to get rid of any fragments left behind then try to install again. Use Ccleaner at the default settings, there is no need to alter any settings.

Did you do a START>Search looking for orphan Trend files? I ask as AV applications tend to configure into other files/folders including the O/S when installed. Not just its program folder.

I don't think this is the cause of your problem though. I am thinking corrupt download.

Did you try an update in Safe Mode?

I did a run search using the words "trend micro" and got 13 files ranging from 1kb to 70 kb. I guess I can assume they are part of Trend Micro and nothing else (?). How do I remove them? (They are not on the add/remove list accessed via control panel.)

Update in a "safe mode". Can you explain what that means.

You can get rid of the "orphan" files that you found by simply right clicking and choosing "delete".
