Trouble downloading in Vista

I have a new Dell computer with vista. When I want to down load application files from the internet, I am usually presented with a button that says something like "DOWNLOAD NOW". When I click on the button, I get a screen that says "save this file" or "cancel". When I click on "save this file", nothing happens. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Incidentally, I am trying to download software to extract zipped files. Can anyone recommend a good free unzip program for doing this?

Generally after clicking save this file you need a destination in which to save the file to. It could be the Vista Download file or a file of your own chosing. Vista has the capability of extracting zip files by double clicking the file and from there clicking extract all. Winzip is one of the most popular zip programs. I think it's still free.

In the dropdown "save this file" find the desktop and save them to there. Later you can move them to a folder somewhere, a place of your choosing. Its probably saving them to the default location, but you are probably not looking in the right place

I have that happen to me and a clue is all I can give you. It's still up there you just have to find it. LOL Can't remember exactly how, I just clicked on the down arrows or on the names listed above, sometimes it on the second line, sometimes I have to scroll up to find it in the list. Someone will post a better answer and I will be interested in the replies.

camp56, damccoy,ravencajun, and stargazzer, Thank you for the quick responses. Below are my answers to the questions you have asked. The browser is IE8. The version I downloaded yesterday was Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX. I uninstalled it, and downloaded and installed it again. Using START> Control Panel>Programs and Features I confirmed what I re-downloaded was Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX. The system I have is 32 bit. After downloading and installation, I still could not see any animation. I went to the sites that ravencajun suggested, went on YouTube too, saw nothing but the same dreadful messages " You don't have current Adobe Flash Player", or "cannot find Adobe Flash Player". I have not try Safe Mode yet. Will it help? How can I get to it? Thank you again for the help.

I agree, you might want to talk to a lawyer just to see what could happen. They might just threaten you with action but not do anything. I'm never sure how far these companies are willing to go when it comes to one person (well, a whole bunch of people, if everyone illegally downloads). For now the bigger issue seems to be his computer usage. I would definitely move that thing out his room until he understands it is YOUR butt that something happens to if he does something illegal. The stuff you've been warned about could be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of illegal material, i.e. explicit images, etc. What you need is the help of a computer specialist that can teach you how to put the basic security measures on your computer. And tell them that your son is a whiz at figuring stuff out. If it doesn't completely stop him, it will at least be a deterrent and you can take some action in the meantime. While he's at school, go in there and look at everything he's been looking at. Then have it completely erased and move the computer to a central location where you can monitor access. My sister (who does know a thing about computers, fortunately for her) went through this same thing with her similarly aged son. It was no picnic but basically she played his game...very well...and it scared the crap out of him. :) Needless to say, he is much more respectful of her and I don't think she has that problem any more.

it depends on your browser and where it has been set to put your downloads at, you can change the default location or simply tell it to ask each time which is what I do because I want different things to go to different areas.
In firefox that would be in tools > options> the Main tab > save files to (browse to select location) or always ask me where to save files.
I don't remember the exact location for it on IE but you can look in tools> internet options and probably find it quite easily.

for those that it may have already downloaded and you can not find go to search and search for the file name on your pc, and look in the all programs area too.
