I'm criminally slow in posting this; hope you weren't biting your nails, Cathy! But election night is over (as far as I'm concerned) and I want to post this before I head home.

First off -- lovely, lovely package.

Cathy said she thought she had to re-assess her favorites when she learned she'd drawn my name, because I'm always talking about how small my kitchen is. But then she realized that many of her favorites came in small packages as well -- hence the "mini-Mustangs" theme!

The first item, peeking over the edge of the packages is a mini-prep Cuisinart -- and I've already made a place for it on the counter. Small and sleek, it's going to be a boon for someone like me, with poor knife skills. It's already made two batches of pesto, with the last of the summer's basil. Vunderbar, I tell you!

Slicing and dicing not enough? Feel like ventilating dinner? Cathy's got me covered, with a Jaccard meat tenderizer. This really looks lethal, and a great tool for cheap meats/marinades. Plus it stores easily and safely in a drawer. Sorry for the blurry picture; it's got three rows of razor-sharp blades for tenderizing meat. Or keeping the roommate in line....

And these are so cool -- I've actually seen these before in the store and put them on my mental checklist. A palm held scrubber and peeler. Ergonomic, easy to store and clean and (so important for us lefties) ambidextrous! The peeler made quick work of a pile of potatoes the night it arrived!

As wonderful as all these things are (and they are!) Cathy also sent several recipes that highlight each tool. I love personal recipes -- and the ultimate mashed potatoes recipe sounds too good to put away -- it's on the menu for later this week.

Thanks so much for sharing oyur favorites, Cathy -- I think they're well on their way to becoming favorites of mine as well!

Mini split or central air? Be gentle, I'm a newbie

The larger the number of rooms that that you install mini splits in the higher the cost in comparison to a central system. Remember that you need returns for a central system. The choices are to have one in each room, install grates in between the rooms, install jump ducts or under cut the doors. Mini-splits have advantages in some situations. They are inherently zoned, so you don't have to cool the whole house for the dogs or you. Depending on your lifestyle, this might or might not save you money. What is installed in the USA is almost all variable-speed (inverter) equipment so it throttles well to control humidity under low load conditions. If you are on the costal plain, that is more important. It is humid down there. Typically, if a system fails you have lots of other areas to stay comfortable in. That also means that a modest generator will run parts of your system.) For me, a duct system that is outside of the house envelope is a drawback. First, ducts always leak even when new and they never improve themselves. That means everywhere you have a leak it equals a power vent either drawing in outside air into a return or blowing air outside. Keep in mind that also induces pressure differentials in your house so air is sucked in or blown out to balance that. Take a look at the Mitsubishi, Toshiba and Sanyo web sites and see what the mini split kingdom looks like. Keep in mind that in addition to the sterotypal high-wall indoor units, small ducted units (that handle more than one room) ceiling cassettes, horizontal ceiling units are available. You should see them on the web sites. They do cost more and are a little less efficient. Check out the different brands for how their controls thermostats) work if you decide to seriously consider mini splits. You obviously need more quotes given the difference between the two you already have.

Big question---what does your spouse think of the idea?? If he's open to it then explore the possibilities. Consider how you could use the house. As a close by "get away" it offers a big yard, small pool, and lake access. Great things for a family with 3 boys. It wouldn't be too far away if you did have a kids ball game to attend. Owing it would allow for the option of you parents relocating and living in it, or perhaps just staying there part of the time. Or, you might find after living in it part time that you like it so much you want to move into it as is or do a sensitive addition. Or, you might find that after owning it for a while that 2 houses are a pia and decide to sell it! You could do any, or all, of those things while you owned it. But you can't if you don't own it. So should you rush to buy it? NO. Like any real estate purchase look hard before you leap. We had our 2d home inspected BEFORE we bid on it. That gave us a good idea of what was needed and how much repairs/renovation would cost (of course there were many surprise problems) and if we really wanted to pursue it. I checked county records re sales prices, taxes, easements, etc of it and surrounding homes. We talked to the neighbors. We also looked at at least 6 other places after discovering this one to make sure it was a good choice and value. We went from my husbands long declared "I'd never own a second home" to his "Honey, what would you think of buying a house on a small lake and oh, by the way I paddled by one for sale today" to buying it in less than 2 weeks. Now it has been 2 years (and lots of renovation) and every time we are out there (frequently as it's only an hour drive)I comment on how glad I am we bought it. Besides the lake, I love its bright contemporary feel as opposed to our traditional in town home. The lake house better reflects me and makes me happy so I understand your falling in love with such a neat mcm home. In summary, if after you both think it through and are interested, look carefully, come up with an estimate of repair/remodel costs (x1.5 to be realistic!), figure out how much you are willing to pay/market value considering those costs then go for it. If you can't get it for a realistic price walk away. If the condition turns out to be too deteriorated--walk away. Either you'll get another opportunity when no one else buys it or you can console yourself by thinking about all the negatives/ impracticalities/second yard to keep up/ etc. that you missed. Let us know the outcome. PS- If you don't buy it you should suggest they list it on the mcm website Lottaliving.com to help it find an appreciative owner.

Cool package, but I already knew that, since Cathy was an ex-swap-mate! I love my mini processor and I gave her the peeler at Canny Camp '06- glad to know she loves it too!

Hey Alison, no excuses now!! I want to see some really awesome potato recipes, because you can scrub 'em and peel 'em too, now that Cathy's got you covered. I have seen those palm scrubbers and peelers and now that several others have mentioned they like them as well, I'm going to give them a try. Time to retire the Pampered Chef potato peeler:-)

You'll have fun with the meat tenderizer, especially if someone needs some gentle persuasion!!!! I wonder if it's good for something like a brisket, that starts off so tough?

The mini FP's are great too, I've never seen an onion chopped so fast! Good for chopping nuts too. Lovely and thoughtful swap box Cathy! Alison, have fun with all of it.

Awesome! These are great. The mini- theme is really cool! And the Food Processer... awesome. bet the pesto was great!

I have a lethal meat tenderizer like that. It is a scary (and wonderful) thing!

and I've never seen the finger held peeler before... for my fibromyalgic hands I bet it would be fantastic!

Really cool gifts. That palm peeler and scrubber is so neat. A mini cuisinart, what's not to love about that and the meat tenderizer could come in really handy! Another great swap!

That is a very useful assortment. I love my peeler like that. My mini FP is getting old so that looks like a lovely replacement. Glad you are getting so much use of the items already Alison.

Alison, I am thrilled that you like your package and thank you for your recap of the swap box.

Personally, I am focusing on creating space and moving towards minimalism so I tried to be sensitive to your space constraints. I hope you will report back on how you like the items.

That is one great swap package! I gave my mini fp to my sister and have been missing it since! It's on my Christmas wish list though. I've never seen those scrubbie thingies and think I might have to research them as they look pretty functional! That meat tenderizer is something else!
