I'm tired of killing mini's

I have had mini roses on two occasions, once as a valentines gift and once because they were on sale and I just had to. You know how it is.

I bought rose fertilizer, followed the instructions, kept the soil surface clear of leaf litter and cut off spent blossoms. I would water them when the soil was just barely damp. They would lose all their leaves (yet still have green stems) and then the stems would shrivel. Indoors.

Today, I bought a mini rose labeled "vigarosa" and then an unlabeled mini rose.

Basic advice?

Also, the vigarosa has one long stem that seems to have grown straight out but has a lot of foliage and little brances, almost as big as the main potted mass. This gives it a trailing sort of look. Am I supposed to support it on a trellis? Allow it to trail? It seems a shame to purne so much very healthy growth off...
