Garage door budget
Comments (19)We didn't want windows and did want to paint. Our lead carpenter made our garage doors. He took a standard wood flat panel overhead door and put wood panels on it in the pattern I drew for him. He then *undercut* the added panels along the door joints -- undercutting keeps the 'seams' from showing when the door is closed. This does make for a heavier door, and requires a slightly stronger door-opener. The doors appear to be arch-top because the door surrounds are arch-top and the applied panels have arches. Nobody else has 'carriage doors' exactly like OURS! Price it out. You will be amazed!...See Morehelp with front door, garage doors, etc
Comments (3)Thanks, teacats. If I go with a more casual style door, can I get away with only replacing the door and leaving the sidelights/transom as is? (except no storm door)? If its only the door, I can probably afford a nicer, heavier weight door, perhaps even with some wrough iron "hinges" and or clavos, etc. But will it look OK with the white trim sidelights? Or, would it be worth giving up the nicer quality door (but still more relaxed style than current)and replace the sidelights/transom to have the same wood look as the door? In other words, it would look more like one "unit" rather than door with sidelight/transom trim? If we go with the 2nd option we would have to put a fair amount of $ with the insurane money b/c the insurane company only pays enough to replace in the style we currently have, plus there was a deductible. I love the idea of window box on garage (and address numbers on house near front door), however, the house is dryvit and I really don't think there is a way for it to support the weight of a window box. Wah! And the main color is going to have to stay the light tan...no $$ to repaint all the dryvit and we just had all the wood parts (window trim, bay, soffits, etc painted white last year. My concern with painting the garage doors the same tan color, is that its going to be even more bland than what it is now and since its dryvit I don't have many option for jazzing it up with window box, etc. Any thoughts on painting the garage faux wood?? Big change, but with a new richer looking door and the brown of the copper roofs on the main part of the house, might this actually help the garage tie into the rest of the house...rather than something I try not to look at?! LOL example door, except this one has matching sidelights. If I go with a door this 'fancy" not sure I can affort to also replace the sidelights. Door itself might have to be downgraded...See MoreSwapping out white slab doors for new contemporary style doors
Comments (7)After talking to several realtors around my area, decided to cancel my orders and go with basically home improvement store items. I will be order $200 translucent door slabs and much cheaper Baldwin $40-$150 lock sets. Why? Buyers at my home's price range really could care less about quality doors and hardware. I guess $2 million homes are not looked upon like I thought they would be now a days. Why spend when you don't need to? Anyways, I was under a different mindset then what is reality in terms of doors and lock sets. People really do not care and not a important selling point at all. New is new and that about it!...See MorePainted my garage door...now what color front door?
Comments (7)I like a green-blue suggestion above, but your exterior colors are so neutral that you can choose almost any color you like and it will be another step to make this house "yours". A bright blue door will make a bold statement and will be an eye-catching focal point distracting from poor landscaping. On the porch, you can add an outdoor chair and decorate it with some bright pillows that will match your front door. If there is not enough space for chair you can add an unusually patterned rug. Read more about how to choose a color for the front door and how to paint it properly. On both sides of the stairs, you can add pots of flowers it is a good idea to make your entry more inviting and interesting. Some inspirational pictures:...See Moremontel (CA US 10b/Sunset 16)
