Picking Appliances - Need Help and Opinions

We are picking appliances for our new home now and went to Tasco over the weekend.

Need some help to determine if anyone knows of any issues/reviews with these appliances, suggestions and opinions on the items selected.

Should we buy the washer and dryer from Tasco or can we get it cheaper during boxing day?

Is there a better 36" stove that we should go with? Same as with the other appliances.

For reference, we currently have a GE Profile (dual fuel), Kitchenaid Superba fridge, Miele Inspira DW and a pair of Samsung washer and dryer that we got from FS during boxing day a couple of years ago for $900.

Fridge - KitchenAid KFIS27CXMS - $2,700

Stove - Wolf (all gas) R364G - $6,199 This has 4 burners and the griddle. For those of you that have a griddle, is it useful?

Hood - Vent-a-hood - $1,650

Dryer and Washer - LG WM2501 & LG DLEX2501 - $1,800 for the pair

Dishwasher - Miele Inspira - $1,599

Dishwasher - we like the one we have now and are going to probably get the exact same one, unless we can find a comparable model that is lower priced.

Stove - The GE profile that we have is a bit of pain to clean. The top has a glass base underneath the gas burners and we have to scrape burnt on food, dust, etc and then use the ceramic cleaner. Would like to go to a 36" model in the new house.

Fridge - We have had no issues with the kitchenaid we have. Only thing we don't like is the two door side by side. I think we would prefer the french door with bottom freezer.

Samsung washer and dryer - no issues. Find that the washer doesn't wash too well - shirt collars stay dirty after wash.

The air flow rate (cfm) required is not a function of the BTU rating (unless it is too low to cook anything). It is a function of the need to contain the uprising effluent. The rough requirement for CFM is 60 s/min times the product of the effluent velocity (~ 3 ft/s), the aperture area collecting the effluent (sq. ft), and some efficiency factor accounting for aerodynamic effects at the baffles (maybe 0.5). (Note that for flush mesh filters the area is the size of the mesh times the effective clear area ratio, something not so easy to account for, particularly for complex mesh structures.) Further, the CFM calculated above should be the actual CFM achieved. Hood and duct transitions, baffle friction, duct friction, house negative pressure due to imperfect MUA will cause the hood blower to move less air than it is rated for. People who have lived with recirculating hoods, or OTR microwave oven ventilation, or the poser kitchens widely published in the media that have no ventilation, will be able to get away with less flow and still be ahead of where they were. The aperture has to be large enough to capture the expanding uprising effluent. Expansion half angle varies around 22.5 degrees from every point on the pan surface hot enough to cook and generate water and grease vapor. The hood aperture should overhang the locus of these projected points at the planned height of the hood. kas

Hey, rednecksmama, we should be comparing notes! I also have a small galley kitchen and a relatively low budget. Agonized over appliance selection for some time, but finally pulled the trigger yesterday and ordered everything. (Yay! One more thing crossed off the list!) For a 30" bottom freezer fridge, I was *going* to go with the GE Profile - it seemed the nicest quality. To cut a few hundred dollars, the Maytag seemed good also. If you have 31" and want counter-depth, Fisher & Paykel make a beauty for about the same price as the GE Profile. (I didn't have the extra inch!) When it came down to it, though, I went for the Frigidaire Professional top freezer. I'm used to a top freezer, was afraid the bottom freezer drawer would seem too clunky, plus the Frigidaire was half the price of the GE Profile (and is still quite a nice refrigerator!). I bought a gas range, so can't help you with electric, but brand-wise I decided on GE over Frigidaire. The Frigidaire I was considering would have given me a lot more features for the money (convection, 5th burner), but that actually worried me that they would have cut on quality to shove all that extra stuff in. (And the cheaper Frigidaire range without the fancy features didn't have SS handles, which was a deal-breaker for me. ;-)) I also got a fairly simple GE OTR microwave to go with the GE stove. Heard not-great things about Frigidaire microwave noisiness and reliability. If I'd had room for a 24" dishwasher, I was going to go with KitchenAid. Seems to be great quality and features, only a little bit of a splurge. The Sears web site is great for looking at user reviews of appliances, btw. They have a good comparison engine, too. I had decided not to consider Kenmore appliances since I've heard complaints about Sears' repair dept. I think your budget is perfectly reasonable.

"I would love to have professional grade appliances, but our budget will not allow it" Word of advice. Skip the "professional" stuff and stick with plain old appliances. There is absolutely ZERO difference between the way a $6000 range cooks, and the way a $600 range cooks. My experience, as well as countless others, have confirmed this. It's interesting to note that some of the stuff you get on so-called "pro" stainless steel appliances is actually cheap aluminum junk that will warp and discolor after awhile. I have all-white appliances, easy to keep clean, easy to maintain, no messy fingerprints, and no worries about sharp metallic edges. Good luck on whatever you choose. I've always had good experiences with Frigidaire(Electrolux) and Whirlpool appliances.

We have the KA CD 25 sq ft. side by side ref. It has performed very well except that the icemaker periodically will stop working. The fill tube that comes from the top of the freezer will freeze up, stopping the flow of water. I give it a squeeze with the pliers (it is a rubber tube) and it starts working again. Have had 2 service calls for this problem in 2 years. Too many for a $2100.00 ref. Other that that it is fine. Maintains temp fine, shelf space is great, etc. We have GE monogram rangetop and oven. It looks like the burners on the GE Cafe line are similar to the monogram burners, but the output on the Cafe line is less. I don't know about profile. A couple of the profile ovens seem to have the same specs as Monogram, but cost less. Or at least that was the case 2 years ago when I built the house. My opinion is that either brand will be fine. Buy the specs and the style you like and enjoy.

I've mentioned this a million times, but if you want a 36" all-gas or dual fuel range, you could do a heck of a lot worse than a Fratelli Onofri. Look at all the positive reviews on AJ Madison. The link below is for the dual-fuel, and here's the link for the all-gas:

But from your reference to Boxing Day and the fact your prices are in dollars, I'm thinking you're in Canada, right? If that's the case it might be a good idea to mention it, since some brands available in the US may not be available there, and also because the exchange rate would help put your prices in perspective.

Anyone here on the forums from Canada? I really need to finalize my choices as the builder needs the dimensions and all to layout the kitchen. Thanks!

Post the appliances you're considering. You'll get comments from people who have those appliances. Some may be in the US, some in Canada. But the main thing is you'll get comments about those specific appliances.

It might work better if you started a new thread for each appliance, e.g. "Electrolux French door fridge-comments?" or something.

Also, search on Amazon and AJ Madison for the appliances you're considering. Both those sites typically have numerous reviews, so you can see what people think of them.

I would suggest you look at the Miele Super-Capacity Washer/Dryer instead of the LG. It will be around two or three hundred dollars more for those, but honestly the difference in quality and results will be worth five times as much.
