questions about wireless internet

Forgive me as i am kind of behind the times on my wireless internet stuff. i currently have DSL at 512k speed for $35.00 a month through our landline phone company. I was at my cell phone place today.(alltel) I recently got a new blackberry and the salesman was trying to sell me wireless internet for my home computer for $40.00 a month instead of my dsl. Included in the deal was one of those small acer mini computers 4 gig for $99.00 with the wireless internet card with 3 months free internet, and free activation. 2 year contract required. He told me that the wireless would be way way faster than the DSL, and that the card could be used in my home computer to make it wireless without a router or used in the mini laptop but if i wanted to use both the computers at the same time that i would need a router which i knew. he quoted the price on the router to be $179.00 so my questions are these:

Is this a good deal? Should i do this and will it really be faster that my DSL?

Is this removeable wireless card the same thing as the wireless card they ask if you want when you order a home computer? ( i guess i was thinking this was something that was integrated?)Is having a usb slot enough to have access to wireless?

Someone told me that i could use my blackberry plugged into a computer to get wireless access of a laptop, and that they do it all the time. is this true because the guy at the cellplace told me i could but it would cost me $30.00 a month and that it would be slow.

Would i need that $170.00 router or would any router work? I am confused on that.

How safe is wireless internet from hackers? If i use zone alarm or something similar would i be protected? How is a blackberry protected for that matter?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I'll try to answer several of your questions. Yes, you will need a special router, but I would NOT buy the one the salesman is pushing on you. I have one made by Cradlepoint (the CTR350) which I bought at Amazon.com and did not pay nearly that much for it. It is very small and I plug the wireless "card" (modem) into a USB port on the router. Then I connect my desktop computer via Ethernet (cat 5 cable). I connect my laptop via the wireless signal sent from the router. It is very easy to set up the security on the router. In addition, I also use software firewalls on my computers. The built-in wireless in the laptop is not the same thing as what you plug in. It allows the laptop to receive and use wireless signals, and all new laptops come with this.

Now whether this would be faster than your DSL is questionable. Sometimes my service with Verizon is quite fast, but at busy times, mostly evenings, it slows down quite a bit. With DSL you have a dedicated line, so your speed should remain constant. I went this route, because I cannot get DSL or cable, and I suffered over 2 years with satellite. Then Verizon's 3-G (EVDO) became available to me. You need to be fairly close to a tower to get a good, strong signal also. If your cell phone service is good, chances are the wireless Internet would be good, also. I was able to buy a used "card", which is really a modem, so that I was not locked into a contract and I can end the service at any time without penalty.

So it's your call. If you are unhappy with your DSL, you might give it a try. Do they have a trial period during which you can return anything and only owe for the usage you had? If not. . . . .It's your call.

what you were talking about using your blackberry is called tethering and yes it can be done, I know several people who have done it successfully for quite a while. You can do some google searches for tethering and find out some info.

Good information from raven and here's more to think about. Hi sportsman12, There could be a lot of things going on, sounds like it's limited to that computer though, since the other one connects. We should be trying 2 browsers too to see if it's browser related. Have you tried 2 different browsers Internet Explorer and another one like Firefox. Sometimes an Anti Virus or Firewall can cause issues, since that is a new router your firewall may not like it just yet. Restart the computer now keep hitting the F8 key. The computer should boot to the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Once you get there Black screen with white letters, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode With Networking hit enter now try again to connect to www.Google.com. See if it connects there. This mode runs without Anti Virus and firewall that's why we want to try it. Don't surf in this mode if it does connect here. Some laptops have a wireless switch on them. Does yours? There are 2 small computer Icons down by the clock, right click them and notice the options available in case you have not done that yet. Note any errors. Next we can look in the Device Manger for errors, and or reinstall the Wireless adapter and flush the DNS as that's what appears to be going on. Since you see a strong connection and unable to connect that points to a DNS issue and it's just a matter of flushing it and renewing it. We can get to that if needed.

"I don't think someone would be on the phone 3 to 4 hours almost every night" You must not have a teenage daughter. :) The phone interference would be most likely if it's in your house since you're not in an apartment. I don't know why you're dropping the connection every night. Is there any other electronic equipment that gets turned on at your house during that time? Maybe something else is sending off signals that interfere. Have you tried resetting the router when that happens? Turn it off, let it sit for a minute and turn it back on to see if that helps. If you're on a 1 acre lot, I'm surprised that you're seeing your neighbors' connections. To secure your connection, you'd need to go into the router setup and the wireless setup on your computer and set them both to use WPA (or WEP if that is all that is supported). The router should have instructions on how to do this. If not, post here and somebody can help.

It does not seem to be a network adapter issue either, as both wireless and direct connection are problematic. The next step to see if a program typically Anti Virus is causing issue. So lets boot the computer to safe mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way, lets just concentrate using a direct connection. Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, the computer will boot to the advanced boot options menu black screen with white letter. From the list presented to you, use the arrow key to select Safe Mode With Networking once selected hit enter on the keyboard. Now try to connect to only Google.com. Let us know if you can connect that way. Do not surf the internet in this mode. Please be sure to try another browser too maybe before doing all this above in case this is a silly internet explorer issue.. Joe

Why not just get a line voltage electric heat thermostat (the type used for electric baseboard heaters) and wire it up so that the heat lamps will come on at a certain temperature? You could wire the thermostat to a receptacle so that whatever you have plugged into that receptacle will get power when the temperature falls below the level you have set. Then you'd have a fully automated system that did not require you to remember to check the temperature and manually turn heat on when needed. If you did this, you could also plug an additional light into the thermostat-controlled receptacle and place the light so that you could see it from the house. This way you could look out the window and see if the heat was on or not.
