Can connect to wireless but not internet

I had to buy a new router . Since then my laptop with Windows Vista will not allow me to get the internet unless I am hooked up directly to router. It use to work before and I have no trouble with my other laptop. When I unplug it from the router- it shows strong wireless connection but no internet. I have tried to do the diagnos problem from window help but it can't get it to work. I have tried shutting off and restarting- still doesn't help.

I am not very computer literate so any simple advise I would like to try. Thank you

when you set up the new wireless I bet it gave a new pass code for your wireless network have you tried entering that new pass code into your laptop for it to connect?

the other thing I would try is to power down your modem, router and laptop/pc's wait about 5 mins then power up in this order, power on to modem let it get fully lit up then power up the router let it get fully let up and ready, then power up your laptop/pc's

Good information from raven and here's more to think about.

There could be a lot of things going on, sounds like it's limited to that computer though, since the other one connects. We should be trying 2 browsers too to see if it's browser related. Have you tried 2 different browsers Internet Explorer and another one like Firefox.

Sometimes an Anti Virus or Firewall can cause issues, since that is a new router your firewall may not like it just yet.

Restart the computer now keep hitting the F8 key. The computer should boot to the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Once you get there Black screen with white letters, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode With Networking hit enter now try again to connect to www.Google.com. See if it connects there. This mode runs without Anti Virus and firewall that's why we want to try it. Don't surf in this mode if it does connect here.

Some laptops have a wireless switch on them. Does yours?

There are 2 small computer Icons down by the clock, right click them and notice the options available in case you have not done that yet. Note any errors.

Next we can look in the Device Manger for errors, and or reinstall the Wireless adapter and flush the DNS as that's what appears to be going on. Since you see a strong connection and unable to connect that points to a DNS issue and it's just a matter of flushing it and renewing it. We can get to that if needed.

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

This happened to me.Called Comcast asked for a tech. they came out and they found out I was not wired right.Things will work right for a while but like people they soon break down.So they rewired and so far everything is fine.I was without complete service for quite awhile.I thought it was my computer went out and brought a newone.Needed to upgrade anyway but I could have waited another year.Now I have another problem This "8" is adoozey .I have nothing but time and I will master it.But if I come up against a big problem I"sure I can get help here.

Thanks for the info. I'm still not real clear what I have and what I need, however. I looked up my device manager in my new computer and found Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. Is this the ethernet connection on the back of the computer or something else? If I do not have WIFI capability and it would take returning my computer to the geek squad to have a card installed, would USB adapter not work instead? Is it your opinion that this is not reliable or exceptable? The laptop is WIFI ready so it is not a problem for that computer. Is there anything else other than the router that I would need for the laptop? On a related note, would it make more sense for me to hard wire all of the stationary computers(hence running ethernet wires all over) and just setting the laptop up for wireless? I appreciate the time you have taken to educate me! Its been a while since I have taken time to read up on technology and now I'm in a time crunch.

I assume that I will have to change my remote id from Comcast back to the remote that originally came with my TV. Are we talking about the remote control for the television? If so, it is the remote that's programmed to work with the TV, not the other way around. Although some "universal" remotes can be iffy with advanced features, so you may be best using the original remote control for the TV. If the TV is Internet enabled and you want to use a wireless connection, then the SSID and password (if security is enabled) must match that of the new router. Of course, you could change the SSID and password of the new router to match the old router. Also I have a second tv upstairs that I would want to also use this wireless connection. Would I just have to buy a second modem/router and use the same software that I would get from AT&T. No. One of the functions of the router is to distribute the Internet connection to computers and devices in your home via wired and/or wireless connections. Again the upstairs TV would need to be programmed to the correct SSID and password. Also I have a second computer about a mile away that I would want to hook up to this same wireless connection also. Again I assume I would just need another modem/router and use the same software once again. That would be problematic. WiFi just doesn't have that kind of range nor could you run a mile long Ethernet cable. You'd likely need a second service from AT&T. I don't know about Earthlink. Most ISP's give you a free email account (or in some cases, multiple accounts) with service. You will need to ask Earthlink what happens to your email account if you discontinue their service. They may allow you to keep the email account active for a small monthly fee. AT&T will give you a free email account with their service as well. You may wish to just migrate or use one of the free services like Gmail or Hotmail and not be tied to the ISP.

You have two laptops. One can connect no problems.
The other one can see the available network but can't connect.

Make certain the security settings are the same for both laptops.
Do the encryption keys match? Everything else match?

If you check that and it still doesn't connect, turn off
all of the wireless security measures. Then see if you can
connect. If you can, then start turning security back on.
I have a feeling the problem lies in the laptop security settings.
