I just looked at my start menu under programs and see this long list of programs my computer guy installed on my computer. Audacity records digital audio information. If you're recording a sound sourced from a record, with the sound source connected to a PC, it's gone through a A to D conversion. Which is what my first comment today mentioned as a factor limiting quality. PC level sound converters are of low quality generally. A really good one all by itself costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Whether a sound is stored in analog form or in consumer digital source, at the point where it's inside a PC and "recordable", it's digital. Digital is digital, the original source doesn't matter as far as ways to record it. When you say "OP", are you talking about the conversation above from many years back? PS - there's nothing at all wrong with sound stored in digital form, per se. Most modern musical sound recordings are stored in that way. But at the recording studio level, the sound is lossless and is at VERY high bitrates and VERY high sample rates, much higher in both regards than anything available or playable at a consumer level. Playback of such recordings over appropriate equipment sounds nearly exactly the same as the sound was live.

There are many pieces of good, free software available. I easily have a dozen major software programs that I downloaded for free, and a number of them work better than the paid versions I previously used. And just because you pay for something doesn't mean it's problem-free. It's true that paid software from a reliable company is not going to contain a virus, but it might be the target of a virus because it's popular, or it might come with add-ons that you don't want. Whenever I am contemplating downloading some free software that looks good, I usually do a Google search with the name of the product +"review" or +"problem" or +"scam". If you see that a lot of people seem to be happy with it, or that you don't get significant negative hits, then it's probably safe. Even so, save it first and then give it a virus scan before installing.

If you happen to use Firefox, this is what I currently use: Download YouTube Videos as MP4 (Very easy to use) A less automatic but interesting approach, using VLC: The Best Hidden Features of VLC (Not quite as quick and easy but you don't need to add an extension) "Does YTD Downloader qualify?" I don't know. I try to stick with open source. Firefox extensions are open source. VLC is open source. YTD Downloader is not. That's just me though.
