windows live messenger

Hi,

I bought my new computer and am getting used to it, but a few problems have "popped up" I have "windows Live Messenger " that pops up every time I start my computer. It was not added by me, but I can't find any way of getting rid of it. I've tried right clicking , etc and no choices are offered for eliminating the program. I'm afraid to go to control panel and remove it's parent program as I'm not sure if there's something in there that I need.

Any suggestions ?

I just solved my own problem by following raven's advice in aanother posting about the Window's 7 forums. Thank you, Raven !

you are welcome! yes that darn messenger can be a pain, if you have any other windows live stuff like mail or hotmail it is going to be around.

Does anybody have a clue what might be causing this? Sounds like the backlight is bad, it's a little lamp that's located in the lower backside of the screen that lights up the screen. Search google for lcd backlight to learn more. There is another component that could be a problem, but the name escapes me now. Good thing you don't have dead pixel lines, that would mean a screen replacement, very expensive. Good thing you have the extended warranty.

I searched til blue in the face on Win7 forum and found nothing. Could be I don't know how to use the search option.

Control panel , to windows live essentials and click on the messenger entry. The option to disable will come up.
I followed the instructions that raven posted in her answer to a previous post.

Do you mean the add & remove program?

This is what I have there.----No option to disable.

Being that thing did not pop up when I first got my laptop and started popping up later, do you think the 9/17/10 is the culprit?
Would I remove that one?

I have the latest live messenger on vista.
Open it and Tools menu / Options / Sign-in .. uncheck the box 'start with computer'

Hi,
If you click on Windows Live essentials, it will give you a drop down of its components and you can choose to disable one or all. Messenger is one of the components....hope I explained this correctly.

I wonder if this came from hotmail when I opened hotmail awhile back to clean it out as I am through with their changes all the time and taking over with everything.
A person doesn't know if they are in windows live hotmail or hotmail or windows live mail?

Started to go to hotmail but got scared when I seen the word default on the status bar when it was DL'ing so stopped. Was scared it would make it my default mail on it's own like was done the last time I was there. Finally solved that problem which shook me up to make me afraid to go there again.

Update-----
I unchecked it as shown above and when I turned on my computer today-----NO popup. Soooooo, That did the trick.
YAY! I don't know where it came from or what caused it to all of a sudden appear other than the fact I had opened hotmail and without asking, it automatically made messenger active. I used messenger back in 1999 when I first signed up for hotmail but never activated it for years along with not using hotmail. The reason I opened it when I did, was cause my computer does not have OE.
I am on another webmail now so will not go into hotmail.
