I came in late last evening from doing a long private duty shift to find my swap from Pat T ( cloud_swift) but haven't had a chance to post "til now.

Impatiently opening-- (heck more like TEARING into) revealed:

And a nice note from Pat explaining why these are some of her favorite things.

Isn't this a beautiful platter ?

--- the grain is amazing & it's acacia wood so nice and lightweight-- so easy on my old wrists , I'll find lots of times to use this plus being able to enjoy the beauty just having it on display.

And these are so cool-- a set of measuring scoops:

-- 1c, 2/3c,1/2c, 1/4c-- who knew they made such a thing ? Perfectly balanced handles will make it so easy for me to scoop out flour & sugar, rice etc--- no more trying to manuver measuring cups into my cannisters .I do so love to bake !

Lastly :

-- is Richard Sax's Classic Home Desserts-- a big, beautiful book that Pat-- being a baker -- just loves & uses all the time so got me a copy-- & post it noted her favorite recipes.

Pat-- I gotta tell ya-- I think you may be a long lost twin or something-- the platter & scoops will make my cooking so much easier-- and now -- proof that long lost twins do happen:

--- yes there is it's twin-- luckily it just happened to be home right now-- it's usually in my GD Lisa's kitchen or in my DD Judy's kitchen-- one or the other is always borrowing it--- mine is filled with scribbles & notes and now I can officially pass mine on to Lisa -- I'll keep yours , remembering on-line friends and maybe years from now Lisa will past it down to a daughter with our swap story.

oooh, my favorite are the measuring scoops. Unusual platter and you can't have too many cookbooks. I can see why these are your favorites.

I just saw those scoops a few days ago and lusted. The platter is beautiful and that is a wonderful baking book. How funny that it is one you own but share! Have either of you made his pound cake that uses heavy cream instead of butter. It's a real favorite with me. Lovely texture and lots less calories.

Being that I'm hand screened every time I fly I would agree a lot of the screening process is nonsense. Steps that are SOOOO important at one airport are completely skipped at another. Some level of screening is useful to prevent weapons, etc. from going on planes but taking your shoes off and putting your liquids in a baggie is NOT preventing terrorists from getting on planes with explosives. It's a waste of time and money. In my opinion one reason we're being subjected to being searched without cause and the like is because we're far too politically correct in how we are defending this country against terrorism. The "rights" of the enemy are so important we're rendered completely ineffective in fighting the terrorist enemy. We follow the old rules of war when the war has changed entirely. We give non-citizen suspected terrorists the rights of citizens instead of handling them like they were suspected war criminals. We pussyfoot around everyone for fear of offending somebody because of their ethnicity, religion or country of origin. Meanwhile terrorists have to be laughing their butts off because they have us completely figured out and we are clueless and powerless. We're running around like a chicken with its head cutoff spending money on ineffective security measures and ever more eroding our freedoms. I think the enemy is winning big time and most people don't even recognize it.

I can see this being a system used by some folks in an earlier, simpler time when it was difficult to find money for some "mad" project ... or to get some major task (buy a wagon, renovate a kitchen, etc.) taken care of that one didn't need to do at a specific time. I see it as there being no large pot of money. Each week (month?), 10 people put in $50.00 (or whatever agreed amount) each, and one person gets the full amount, using it for a task that they've wanted to do for a time but couldn't afford, or collect enough money to do. Whether they put names into a hat, and draw one out to decide who gets the first pot, they would have some pattern in how to distribute it. Next week/month, everyone puts in their $50.00, and another person gets it, whether by picking one of the rest of the names out of a hat, or according to the pre-determined pattern, or by whatever means of deciding. Next week/month, everyone gathers and contributes their $50.00 each, and a third person gets it. As such plans began in an earlier time, when people in a community knew one another well and there was little moving around, it would be among a group of long-term friends ... and a person who had a reputation for scamming wouldn't be invited in, in the first place. After ten weeks/months, everyone gets the payout one time. I think that the term would more likely be at least a month, for gathering those $50.00 bundles would be a substantial task, and would take a while to accomplish ... especially when multiplied by ten, in uninterrupted sequence. It's a forced saving plan. Sort of like Weight Watchers, I think - a lot more difficult to quit if you're in a group, where you'd be embarrassed to default, more possibility of success than if you've simply agreed with yourself, with no outside "police" method to keep you honest, or continuing to participate. What's your success rate at keeping your New Year's resolutions?? As for putting the $500.00 on the credit card ... are you going to be ready to come up with the full $500. by next month? If not ... it's going to cost you a pretty penny, if you let much of the debt run for ten periods! If you're willing to postpone your benefit for 10 weeks/months, and have the discipline to make the contribution each week, use the bank account ... but the amount of "extra" that the bank offers may buy an all-day sucker ... but maybe not ... ... and how long did that "all-day" sucker last, can you recall? Hey - here's an idea ... ... how be you start your own bank? Get the gov't. to support you with a major loan ... at no interest ... and lend the money out, at a substantial interest rate ... ... and a substantial fee if the borrower gets his payment in one day late, etc. You know the game. On the other hand ... ... hasn't one of the major problems of our economy been in recent times that we tried to run before we knew how to walk? And the whole buying-thing-before-we-had-the-money got us into a bucket of trouble! It looks as though the leaders of the Big Banks, having claimed to have paid back all of the gov't. bail-out ... ... ???????????????????????? ............... ... now feel that they're justified in paying themselves those huge year-end bonuses!!!!!! As some have said ... ... they just don't get it. Trouble is - the rest of us just don't get it. Gov't.'s been bailing out major coporations for years. Socialism for those well-connected (or "too big to fail") ... ... private enterprise for the rest of us (the little guys). Seems to me that for most of us, if we'd darn near run our company into the ground ... ... we'd be out on the street, looking for a job (with no letter of reference from former employer). New meaning of "BBB" (in additon to "Better Business Bureau") - how about "Beaastly Bankrupt Bankers"??!! Have yourselves a great (and prosperous) New Year, O.K.? ole joyful

OK, I'm not as fast as Jacques Pepin, but it only took me 11 seconds to remove the ligament from two chicken tenders today. As I said, I slaughter my own chickens, which I've raised, and so I seldom de-bone breasts when packaging. They look like this at first: I timed myself, it takes 23 seconds to run my knife under the rib bones and make my chicken breast boneless. Bones go into a bag for chicken stock, and into the freezer until the bag is full. Then the breast is cut into flatter portions for cooking as filets, or into three pieces for recipes like today's chicken with Jalfrezi sauce. The "tender" is easily removed, and the ligament located. I slide my knife under, like this, grab the end with a paper towel to avoid slipping and run that knife down the length of the ligament. 11 seconds from location of the ligament to done. Mostly, though, I leave it in, no one complains. Here it is removed, though: So, as has been said, a matter of seconds and it's gone, and it's not hard to find or remove. i just love the measuring spoons, something else to add to my ever-growing list. i was just looking at some of that same type wood, it is gorgeous. what a small world with that book.

I love the measuring scoops and don't think I've seen them before. And Diane you are correct, so much easier to retrieve flour with a scoop then a bulky cup!

The platter is so nice and I've looked at several wooden platters lately but will wait until I find the perfect one!

Love the cookbook and this is one I've glanced through too. It's a good one, ENJOY!

Those measuring spoons are so neat! I have never seen them before. Will look for them for sure. Beautiful platter. Love the woodgrain on it! Cookbooks are always an asset, and how cool that you both love the same one. I will have to check that one out as well. Great swap!

I'm glad to hear from you. I was beginning to fret that the package had been delivered to the wrong place or something.

Yes, I made the origami in the package. I wasn't sure I would make them so they weren't explained in the letter. I wanted to include something I had crafted given your screen name. The "swan" is suppose to be my name sake cloud swift (aka black swift, a bird with range partly in California) - it looks like the body got a little flattened in shipping. And I made the more colorful origami butterflies are because you like earth tones; that's my favorite origami model; and it is mostly flat so it would survive shipping better than models of flowers or dragon flies. Since I notice others sometimes include their local supermarket free magazine for a flavor of the area, I included Something Extra from our Raleys and Bel Air market chain.

I'm glad you liked the package and that you have a use for the book even if it is a duplicate. Richard Sax did quite a job on that. I love reading all the marginal notes. The recipes are well written and always work. As granjan mentions about the pound cake, lots of the recipes use lower fat ingredients that still get tasty results. I haven't tried that pound cake. As I was going through marking favorites, I realized how many recipes in there that I haven't tried. I need to break away from my tried and trues to some others.

I looked at ceramic and glass platters too but most were so heavy. I looked through the whole stack of wood ones to find the one with the most interesting grain.

Granjan and others, those are the scoops from Vollrath. In the words of the old ads "Accept no substitutes." There are some similar ones made by others but I think the Vollrath ones have the best shape. Some of the others are too rounded in front or have handles that aren't as friendly to the hand. My husband bought my set and originally told me the wrong restaurant supply store - they had the All Clad set and the handles had a curve that didn't feel comfortable to me. I love how easy these make baking. They slide right into the flour without compacting it; get into the corner if the container is getting low and tip all their contents into the mixer bowl of my KA mixer more easily than the cups. The brand can be a bit hard to find.

What a great package!! Now I feel a need to own a set of those measuring scoops. A quick google search only turned up buying them in sets of 5. Alas I am not a restaurant. My kids would like it if I was. LOL! I think everything in the package would be anyones favorites.

I've always enjoyed the swaps and seeing what everyone recieves, but I think that this is my favourite swap so far. I love that everyone is sending their partner things that they also have and enjoy and want to share.

Diane, you are going to love those measuring scoops. A friend of mine gave me a set a couple of years ago and I use them all the time. That is a beautiful cookbook and that platter. Wow, I love wood and that platter is unique.

Pat, you really put a lovely swap box together for Diane. Are you sure this was your first swap?

I love the measuring spoons and the platter! Great gifts, Cloud Swift! You sent such nice gifts! I know Diane will put everything to great use and I'm looking forward to seeing some great desserts from the book. Enjoy it all, Diane, I love the cookbook story, it's nice to pass down the first one and make some great memories with the second!

robinkateb and others looking for the measuring scoops (aka measuring spoons), I got them at Restaurant Equipment in Sacramento. For those in the SF Bay Area, they have a store there too. This page has a link to a list of restaurant supply stores. Your local restaurant supply might have them (though only one out of 3 that I visited here stocked them).

Economy Restuarant Equipment also has an on-line order site called Big Tray that lets you buy singles. (I don't understand why two names - they both have the same SF street address - perhaps Economy Restaurant was already taken.) The on-line prices are a little lower than the in store prices IIRC so with shipping one would come out about even. I hope the link below shows the measuring scoops - if not, search on Vollrath measuring spoons or go to Bakery Supplies and then Measuring Spoons to bring them up.

Very unusual scoops and platter. I would love that they are lightweight too. Much easier on old Arthur. Great job Pat!

The platter is lightweight. The scoops are 18-8 steel so they have a definite heft. But the long handle lets them be held in the whole hand and they are well balanced so I think they are more friendly to old Arthur than measuring cups with dainty handles that have to be held with pinched fingers.

Pretty platter. I love things that are useful, yet make a pretty display.

The scoops are cool, and that book has been on my list for awhile.

Oh what a lovely box! The platter is beautiful, and smart! I'm only recently starting to see the wisdom of lighter weight platters loaded with food. I, too, will be hunting for the scoops and I think that I need to check out the cookbook, too. Great job, Pat! Love the origami idea, too.

Love the platter, and the book looks great.Those scoops are really different (at least from what you can get where I live, lol). Origami pieces were a nice little touch, also. Nice package Pat!

Oh yes, I also love the platter, it can be used for so many things. Plus, now that Diane has a new book, her GD is going to be a part of this swap too, another participant!

The scoops look interesting, I can see that we're going to see pictures of more of Diane's baking, which is a real bonus.

It's a very nice package, Pat, you did very well.
