using AdAware

I have installed AdAware thinking it would eliminate a lot of unwanted ads in my email but I sure am disappointed. I will say, it does find a lot of unwanted ads when I run a scan but there sure is a lot that still come through. Am I not doing something right or am I just going to be bombarded with these disgusting ads? Almost all of them are for meds or Viagra. I don't believe I ever go into a site that would be the reason I'm getting them every day. Any help would really be appreciated and I thank you in advance. I've even wondered if I'm deleting them correctly but I don't know how I could louse that up, but knowing me....... BT

AdAware will not get rid of e-mail spam. Who's e-mail do you use? Some provide a spam blocker, also if you open the add you may get the option to un-subscibe to it.

Gotta disagree a little bit here. Unless a spam is from someone you have used in the past, i.e. Best Buy, Amazon, etc. do NOT ever open a spam let alone "unsubscribe". Millions and millions of spam e-mails are dispatched daily looking for active e-mail addresses. To answer just one of these will verify the existence of your address and the flood gates will open. Spammers share/sell lists of valid addresses amongst themselves. Plus the chance of a virus is a possibility too.

As far as web based services, Hotmail's filters have really improved in recent years. Yahoo's need quite a bit of improvement. If you subscribe to an independent ISP take a few minutes to read its FAQ's, Help and a telephone call to them if necessary.

Establishing safe surfing and e-mail practices along with properly defined blockers/filters is the only remedy that is safe and efficient.

Ad-Aware 2007 Free is a solid post-infection tool. If you don't want to pony up the money to purchase real-time protection with Ad-Aware Plus or Pro. Just a note & not sure if it was covered don't be under the impression that the free version is going to run and protect you. You will need to run the scanner manually to benefit from it.

Confirmed, owbist. Going back to 8.1.2 corrected the problem. Watch out for requests to upgrade to Version 8.2 throughout the installation process. Click on 'later' any time you are asked about it.

Neal I take it you are a little intimidated with the inner workings of your computer? Nothing wrong with that. I was terrified the first few times I took the side cover off. However you must decide if you are going to get past that and fix it. You have asked for help and it has been given but you do not appear to have tried many of the suggestions so far, or have not told us what happened when you did try things. So far we know you cannot use Internet Explorer so you cannot download and install necessary updates from Microsoft. Nor can you go to online scans because most if not all of those are set up for IE. We know your AVG is at least 6 months out of date and the wrong version making it vitually useless. We know you do not have a firewall so anybody and everybody with the savvy can (and probably have) attack your computer and the dozens of phone home spies installed on your machine are taking possession. We know you cannot get to anti virus sites, for me that says virus's and trojans are in control of your computer. At this state it is pointless to worry about if your teenager's actions have caused the problems. Those actions may not have helped but the responsibility here is yours because you failed to take precautions needed for safe computing. From the computer you are using to post here download the free AVG 7.5 from here then from here download the free AVG anti spyware and from here download the free AdAwareSE and from here download the free Zonealarm firewall and finally from here download Crap Cleaner. Save all these to a thumb drive or burn to CD. Now on your computer and remove the cable to the internet for now. Then click Start, click Control panel, click Add/Remove programs. Remove AVG, AdAware and anything else that pertains to safety but is out of date. Install and run Crap Cleaner at the default settings, this will remove all the excess files and fragments of programs left by untidy uninstallers from all over your computer. Install AVG anti virus, AVG anti spyware, AdAware and Zonealarm. Allow each to do a full scan while still disconnected from the internet and allow Zonalarm to start. Then re-connect your internet connection and open each of these programs and get the latest updates. Then run the full scan with each again. Then visit Microsoft for all the Windows updates you are missing, I asume you have WindowsXP? Now Neal, if you are fearful of any of this say so and hopefully another poster will come along and tell you that what I have suggested will work - or disagree and tell you different things to try. There is nothing in this message to harm your computer.

Below are the 2 links grandms suggested for you. Please get an anti virus program installed sudden like, then instantly look for updated definitions followed by a full scan to give you peace of mind. Why are you concerned about what nasties AdAware finds? Surely it is better to accept that it is doing an excellent job - as long as you look for updates often and runs scans. Simply click to have them removed, breath a sigh of relief and then enjoy other aspects of your computer. I could not find how many nasties AdAware protects against but just for interest here are some others Spybot Search & Destroy - 30,789 Spywareblaster - 8086 AVG anti malware - 877,760 and I run all 3 of those. I used to use AdAwareSE but when I upgraded to AdAware2007 I found it suddenly became a huge resource hog so I removed it. Rather than return to the SE version I went with the new AVG anti malware which previously was known as Ewido prior to AVG buying the company. Download AVG anti virus Download Avast anti virus

Oh, good grief, now I've done it. I have been uninstalling a lot of these things. Playing right into their hands, I guess. But thanks so much for your help, I guess I will just have to suffer through this every day.
I'm going to my server and see what they have...just got an ad from them telling us they are offering a service thst will get rid of the span, virus, ads, etc. Gee whiz, what a mess I've created. Had no idea the unsubscribe would backfire like this.
What I was wondering is, can I use AdAware and Hotmail at the same time or would it be better to get rid of the AdAware altogether? It would be cheaper than going through the server. Thanks again to you both. BT

I think it's a good idea to keep AdAware... It wasn't made to stop SPAM, it was made to eliminate spyware ( which can cause a ton of problems )...

If you are getting way too much SPAM your best bet would be to get a new e-mail address... One that doesn't contain any real words or names or something with numbers in it... ( like: brom123thmb@whatever )

After you get a new e-mail address here are some other things to remember; do not post it on any sites, ( guestbook's or in posts ), only give it to people you want to receive mail from and never ever open mail from someone you don't know... Curiosity is bad for cats and even worse for e-mail readers... lol

Email is free! [Some places may charge for unusually huge storage.]

Go to Google & click on GMAIL and create yourself a new account. I have gotten maybe 3 spams in 2 years. My Excite email gets lots of spam. That is the address I use for anything online requiring a valid email address.

Yes I also have 2 e-mails for that reason too, Thunderbird, and yahoo.

My ISP account is strictly for investment concerns, immediate family and trusted close friends.

I have a Hotmail account strictly for forums.

I have a Yahoo account strictly for sites which require an e-mail address (If after a time I am comfortable with the site and I find it necessary I change the contact address to above.)

I have a separate Hotmail account I use for all other contacts which are important to me; credit cards, airlines, on-line shopping, banks, etc.
