My swap box was waiting for me when I got home last night from visiting my DM downstate.

James, it's perfect!!!!

I opened the Frankoma jug first, it is beautiful and I will be putting to actual use, holding the maple syrup that I love. I have some antique mixing bowls that I use all the time that are the very same color. I use all my stuff, never 'just on display' here. It will always be very special to me. Thank You!

Next I opened the box with the wine glasses. Almost bought some very similar....glad I didn't. These are much nicer. I'll be posting our Thanksgiving dinner pic today and they will be in it as we always enjoy a glass of wine... Thank You!!

Third item..... James, I'm not sure why you were worried about the cookbook selection. It looks great! I love cookbooks, read them like a novel and this one will keep me reading for a very long time. I've already spotted some things I will be making. I opened the book up to the chapter on poultry and have already decided to make Ginger Chicken, Peanut Chicken, Lemon Chicken and Chicken Potato Patties..... I love the fact that this book focuses on many countries around the world. I really like the way the book is organized. I'll be using it a lot. Thank You!!!

Oh Boy, I would say that it definitely is the perfect swap box. I can just imagine what that little jug feels like. It will be perfect for maple syrup Nancy. And the stemless wine glasses are very nice too. I hope you will share some of Mark Bittman's recipes with us. As usual well done James.

Here's my favorite site for interpreting feline lab results. Click on the name of each lab value of interest, and it'll download a small pdf file that explains the primary implications of that particular lab value: lab value explanations If Ziggy dislikes the liquid al hyd that your vet provided, you can purchase it in a tasteless powder form that is easily mixed into food at the following link: aluminum hydroxide powder At the same website, you can purchase the needles that are most popular with CRF caretakers (Terumo Ultra Thin Wall 20 ga.). Terumo needles are considered by many (myself included) to be better manufactured and sharper than the Monoject needles that most vets use. The superior sharpness and smoothness of Terumo needles seems to be more comfortable for cats. The 20 ga. Ultra Thin Wall Terumos have a flow rate that is almost equivalent to the larger, more uncomfortable, 18 ga Monojects, as well. You can also purchase IV lines at the same site. In case you're not aware, you can purchase Ringer's very inexpensively by the case if you call around and price shop at your local pharmacies. You probably won't find any pharmacies that keep it in stock, but they should all be able to order it for you overnight. You'll just need a prescription from your vet. I can purchase a case of 14, 1000ml bags of Ringers for $23/case from my local Target Pharmacy. Lactulose and Miralax are both osmotic laxatives with similar action in the gut. Lactulose, however, may cause digestive upset in lactose-intolerant animals (which most cats are), whereas Miralax will not. Miralax, being a nearly tasteless crystalline powder, is MUCH easier to administer than Lactulose, as well. It is easily mixed into canned food and is undetectable to most cats. Like Lactulose, Miralax is a dose-to-effect drug, meaning that you can adjust the dose up or down to maintain optimal stool consistency. But like Lactulose, Miralax is only effective in a properly hydrated animal, which is one more important reason to be consistent with subQ fluids. From your description, I have to assume that Ziggy is responding to your husband's nervousness during fluid admins. If I were you, I would kindly dismiss your husband from fluid duty and handle it yourself. It's also extremely important to warm the fluids before admins, as room temp fluids can badly chill a cat and make him extremely uncomfortable. If you'd been using room temp fluids on Ziggy and just recently started warming them, he may still be anticipating the chill of unwarmed fluids. Just give him a little more time to trust that he'll be getting a warm internal shower instead of a cold one from now on. I have found that the less restraint I use, the more cooperative my cats are during fluid admins. I do admins on diningroom chairs by a large window. I use my body and the chair backs to block the cat's movement off of the chairs without actually having to hold the cat, while the window helps to distract the cat a bit during the admin. I'll post a pic of my setup if you'd like to see it. It's very common for CRF cats to have problems with excess stomach acid, so many of them do take an acid blocker. As I noted earlier, Pepcid AC is the most commonly used med for this purpose. I use Zantac 75, instead, because it has fewer potential drug interactions than Pepcid. But Zantac is a pain in the neck to cut into 1/8's. I don't know of anyone who uses Prilosec, which is why I'd be very interested to know why your vet chooses to use it. If he knows of any studies of Prilosec's use in CRF cats, I'd love to read them. We CRF caretakers are always on the lookout for potential improvements in our management protocols. Laurie

Tonight I put the pizza stone in the grill and baked Salmon with doctored up Costco Pesto sauce on top in an old deep dish pizza pan. Husband said it was the best I have ever made. It was served with Costco prepared couscous with an extra squeeze of half a lemon. Lunch was Costco prepared brushetta over Costco sliced demi baguettes, a little Costco crab dip and array of fresh fruit. Tomorrow will be leftovers from all the above. I think I will be shopping at Costco a lot during remodel and will cook up the large quantities of chicken breast packs on the grill, putting in zip locks and freezing. I will have lots of fresh veggies on hand as well as instant rice. Now that I know I can use my outside grill as an oven with the pizza stone in there I dont feel IÂll really be that limited and will even give casseroles a try using the already cooked chicken. I never had much counter space anyway so maybe this wonÂt be so bad.

LOL, 2many, I think Sriracha tastes like vinegar and hot peppers, but can't taste any other flavors. I'm a wimp, I like just a little heat but I don't want the enamel on my teeth to bubble. I think if it's so hot I can't enjoy the flavors of the food, it's kind of pointless, but Elery loves heat, the hotter the better. That is one mean looking panty liner, BTW. (grin) Sleevendog, I found a similar potato in my storage: I left it propped up on the counter for Elery to find and he didn't even notice it, LOL. So much for that Valentine's Day thought! Thanks for the sriracha tip on hummus, Elery would love that. I suppose I could just mix it in at the end, so the entire batch isn't "contaminated"? (snicker) AnnT, the steak looks delicious, as always, and although I don't care for very many hot chilies I love peppercorns. It's a different kind of heat. Annie

Nancy, I'm glad you like everything. This swap gave me fits. I kind of punted with the wine glasses. I had in mind the whole time a big platter but I couldn't find one that I liked and wasn't sure where to find what I wanted. It was fun though and I hope you guys enjoy the stuff.

Very nice!! James you have excellant taste! Riedel wine glasses are a very nice wine glass, and the stemless ones are very nice. Nice pottery jug, and so perfect for syrup.
I have one of Mark Bittman's cookbooks and it is very good!
Wonderful swap package, you're going to get lots of enjoyment from it Nancy.

Nancy lucky you! I treasure the piece of Frankoma James sent me in a long ago swap, very collectible. I've heard so much about Mark Bittman but never tried ( knowingly) any of his recipes. Also have a set of the Riedel stemless and I just love them. Something special about holding them.

Wow..looks like pottery jugs are the in thing amoungst the CF! I've never seen any in person...They are really nifty!
And maple syrup is just perfect for that one!
Yeah I wanna hear more on those recipes Nancy!

Bittman's recipes are so easy & yet somehow end up spectacular-- you'll love them-- great choice Jim.

And I've heard so much about Riedel glassware-- they sure look elegant .

I have a passion for glassware, and those Reidel are really great... I may need to put stemless Reidel on my Christmas list....

Love the pitcher, It's a great color... and to have it match stuff Nancy already has! and like Nancy, I read cookbooks like novels, so they can never go wrong...

James does it again! Great package you have there Nancy!! Love the pitcher! Frankhoma is made here in OK and I have a couple of the older ones like this. Bittman was new to me until the forum and I love his version of steak diane....think MQ shared that a few years back. I'm challenged with stemware after a few and need to get some of those Riedel glasses...LOL! I know you and Kim will enjoy these things for many years.

Nancy, that's a great package James sent you.

That pitcher will be perfect for maple syrup, I think you use it as much as I do, so that little pitcher will get a lot of use, I think.

The wine glasses will be perfect for you and Kim, I know you enjoy wine regularly with meals so nice wine glasses will be very useful too.

Yes, I can see you now, curled up with a glass of wine and your new cookbook, in the first real snowstorm of the year.

Love the shape of the pitcher - does it have a stopper? I would put honey in it instead of syrup, however, but whatever you use most would be appropriate. It looks small enough to use as a cream pitcher also. Anyway, I love special serving items like that.

I've never seen stemless wine glasses. Like David, I need to replace a few myself!

I watch Mark Bittman fairly often, and while I don't like his personality, his recipes do sound good - generally fairly quick and fairly easy while also including interesting combinations of ingredients. I think I would like his cookbook much more than his show!! He spends a lot of time in Spain, and I love Spanish food.

I think that cookbook is perfect for you. I love the international theme. Here is a thread of chowhound folks talking about some of the recipes. Lemme know if you can't find some of the ingredients locally, I'll swap you for some canned goodies! #@&$@^!! James you are such an enabler my library has that book.

I have been looking at Reidel for a long time and fondling them in the stores. I love the fact that they aren't tippy like stemmed wine glasses...I swear I should buy stock in 'Wine Away' stain remover. LOL.
