Dell printer: 'Right cartridge incorrect' message

Have done some googling on this subject, seems like a common theme going with Dell printers. Our Dell printer has a Dell color cartridge that is 3/4 full, worked great on Sunday , now we are getting the "right cartridge incorrect" message.

Have taken it out and stuck it back in numerous times, to no avail...same message. Googling results : some say a whole new cartridge,(despite it still being 3/4 full) some say BOTH black and white need to be replaced, some say ditch the Dell and go for another brand. I hate to spend the big bucks on new cartridges if that won't do it. Almost cheaper to buy a new printer than black AND colored cartridges. Anyone on here had any similar experiences with the Dell printer? (Dell AI0 962)..any suggestions?

From what I saw that printer has a poor history. And the error appears to indicate a color cartridge problem. some folks have replaced the color cartridge and resolved the error, for others it has not resolved the error, so I could not recommend buying a cartridge and saying that would take care of it based on my search results, I can say this when purchasing a printer I stay with companies in the printer business like, HP, Cannon, brother, because of the amount of printing I do per day I had to get away from cartridge type because of the expense, and have moved to a Brother Printer - Laser jet\drum type.

Zep516: thanks for the reply..maybe I'd better go see what is leftover from the shopping throngs of Black Friday and check out some new printers. That Brother printer sounds like an option...I see that our tech specialist at school has gotten a couple of them for somewhere..will have to see what he thinks about them too.
I know that the Dell has never printed as well as my HP at school. the Dell printer was with a "package deal" when we bought the Dell computer....not such a good deal I guess.!!

Try unplugging the power from the printer, then plug it back in, maybe that will give it a fresh start. At least that is what I do when printers give me a problem. They seem to have a mind of their own and get confused very easily as to what they are supposed to be doing.

maime, There is nothing wrong with feeling relief. Death is a new beginning, not an ending, part of the circle of life. I'm sure she is happy, now. My Grandmother used to tell me that life was death, and death was life. I miss her horribly still after 20+ years and very grateful that she is no longer suffering the way she had before she passed on. She will always be a very important part of my life, and my children's & Grandchildren's, who never had the pleasure of knowing her as I had. Her memories are alive in everything that I do or the choices I make and will make in the future. Because of her, I am who I am, and I thank her for that till this day!

A tip to save ink: I print in "Fast Draft" mode rather than "Normal"--it uses much less ink, and the minor decrease in print quality doesn't bother me. If I'm doing a very important document, I just change to "Normal" quality. My printers are set to "Fast Draft" as default, so I don't have to remember to change the preferences each time. gneegirl, the cost of cartridges depends on the printer--my newer printers use cartridges that cost $15, whereas my old all-in-one uses cartridges that cost $30. And my laser printer cartridges are $65 (but last much, much longer).

Glenda, go to www.staples.com - they have a 20% off coupon in the weekly ad (good for the purchase of one item). If you take in your old cartridge this week, you can get a $6 rebate credit. I usually either buy at Staples, or through www.hp.com (if HP sends me an e-mail about a sale, with free shipping). Yes, the cartridges are expensive, but I only use HP brands. I tried an off-brand one time, and it was worthless.

Epson had a similar lemon printer back a while. The C82 printer would use the first cartridge, an owner would buy the new ink only to find the printer refused to accept it. I was one of many who bought that disaster.

I have a Lexmark that has been troublesome too but I have been able to overcome that even if is is annoying every so often to have to 'fix' the thing.

My HP 7760 has been a wonderful buy. Two years now and still as good as ever.

well..took a $25 gamble on a new ink cartridge and guess that did it for this time. Wonder how long this one will be good for before it gives me the same message. Some think that there is something embedded in the cartridges to make them "no good" after so long , regardless of the real amount of ink in them....hmmmmmmmmm!!! that one had been in there a long time but hadn't really been used that much. Still going to do some research on a Brother..

Lexmark makes the Dell printers.

You might want to give some of the cheaper inks a try --- Carrot Ink, Printpal, etc. These are far cheaper than the brand inks and seem to work well for day-to-day printing. My last PrintPal inks cost from $4.95 to $6.50. Larger cartridges with several colored inks are higher.
