Desktop shortcuts

HI Folks,

I am using X-P SP3. I visited a very interesting University of Maine gardening site recently and went to file, send to, shortcut desktop..I clicked the last one. Just like I have done many times in the past with other sites. The University Icon appeared on my desktop. Today, I tried to access this site by double clicking on the icon on my desktop and got this message on a pop-up "Problem with Shortcut" The message said The targret"" of this Internet Shortcut is not valad. Go to the Internet Shortcut Property Sheet and make sure the target is correct. Would someone pleast tell me in laymans terms, what this means and what I can do to prevrent it in the future?

It means that it cannot find the web page that it's supposed to find when you double click in it. Right click on the icon and select properties from the drop down menu and you should find the URL of that page and and maybe see why it's wrong.

Bob, thanks for the quick response. By right clicking on the icon, I did find the URL of the page I wanted, but I couldn't tell why it wouldn't open the page.

it might be easier to simply use your firefox's bookmark toolbar and put you icons to your most used sites right there on that toolbar then once firefox is open just click on the icon. To put any website icon on the bookmark toolbar in firefox, put the cursor on the icon at the beginning of the url in the address bar then drag it from there to the bookmark toolbar and let go. Shortcut for Windows XP Callendar. When you click start you have 2 columns. When you open and go to Microsoft Works Calendar Left click the Calendar and drag it over to the first column at the top. Close All Programs and now left click and drag the Calendar to your Desktop. That's your shortcut. As for the Reminder for your calendar it's located in Options in the Edit Tab. I didn't check any further.

I set up the "bookmarks toolbar" in firefox, so that I have most shortcuts right in front of me. I just drag new shortcuts right onto it. Simple. In the upper toolbar, do this: View, Toolbars, Bookmarks Toolbar, and check it. Now you have an extra row up top for your shortcuts (and if you have too many, there's a >> to see those, too. Just drag from your address bar right onto it. Simple. BTW, you rename them (if you want) by Right-click, Properties, and call it each whatever you want. This way is better than desktop icons.

This is what I learned to do right here at CompHelp. When you are on the page you want a shortcut for, look at the URL. Lay your cursor on the icon in front of the http (here it is a little green leaf) and drag it to your desktop. I have a bunch of them on my Dssktop. HTH Sue

You might try copying the URL and pasting it in your browser location bar. If it doesn't connect when you hit the enter key try deleting the part after the last / and press the enter key again. If it connects then you can try to find what your're lookn
ing for there. If you do find it you can copy and paste it in the properties section of your shortcut. The shortcut would then work.

Bob, it appears that the copy and paste method will work best for me.
