36 inch induction cooktop with bridging

I am at the very beginning stages of investigating a more expansive (in scope, size and budget) kitchen remodel than originally envisioned. If we go with this bigger remodel, I would like to switch to double wall ovens and a cooktop.

I love my current frigidaire induction range. So I know I want an induction cooktop. I think I would like a 36 inch cooktop rather than a 30 inch, though I have never cooked on anything bigger than 30. I doubt I would use the extra burner, per se, as I never have more than three things at a time now (and usually just one or two). But the extra space for handles and such seems like it would be a nice luxury.

The one thing I do wish I could do on my current set up that I can't is cook with a griddle. So I'd like to find a cooktop that allows bridging.

I tried searching a bit on gardenweb and took a quick look at ajmadison. All I came up with for a 36 induction cooktop under 2k that allows bridging is the kitchenaide architect. Am I missing other possibilities? Thoughts on it?

Miele has the KM6367, a 6 burner unit with 3 flex zones.
It may become available at US retailers, it can be shipped from Europe(you need a note from your insurer) or contact Miele Marine dealers.
German price without vat is $1840 with the current good exchange rate.

I had a Monogram which is the same unit with the exception of not having a pan size sensor (which I don't truly get since its not like the "burner" gets hot). We were really happy with it from a performance standpoint. It, and induction all together, lived up to the hype. It was as fast as i had hoped, and it offered all of the control i was expecting. I had three nits though: 1) Cleaning our unit's controls would often cause the controls to beep and read "error". This happend even if the cooktop was locked. It was never a big deal, but it kinda annoyed my wife. 2) The user interface isn't as slick as some other units with a slide type control. Going from low to high means you have to put your finger on it and let it climb 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 etc all the way to 10 (I know, first world problems right?). Some units now have a slide bar that works like an iPad. 3) We somehow got a scratch on the glass after only 6 months. It didn't affect performance, and neither my wife or I remember doing it. In the long run it wasn't a big deal either since it was just cosmetic. If I was going to rate it, it would easily be a 9 out of 10, and like I say, those were nits and nothing serious. I liked the fact that General Electric made the unit since they have a lot of experience making high voltage electric devices--I trust them more than some more "appliance-focused" companies who might not have as much experience in that neighborhood (personal opinion there though). We lost our house in a wildfire last summer or I wouldn't be talking about the stove in the past tense. This go around, we are doing a Thermador instead because we are going with a full package, but we considered doing GE again too. Good luck with your decision!

Favorite 36 inch frameless induction cooktop?

Just to update this thread, I've been looking for a frameless 36" induction cooktop to mount flush with the counter. So far, the only ones I've found are: - Wolf - Miele - Gaggenau - GE Profile/Monogram The first 3 are pricey, and the last I worry a little about QC/reliability. I think Fagor sits ~1/4" up on the countertop, so that's close. Of the lot, I think I prefer the Wolf the most. It needs just over 6" clearance underneath, so there may be some rejigging of the cabinetry, but the controls were easy, and the patterning on the ceran top looked good and (hopefully) would help hide any scratches. Any others to consider that I might have missed?

kekramer, I definitely use my CSO more than the M series. While I love the M series convection, the CSO heats up faster and is waaaayyyy more versatile. I am also a bread baker and this oven is a game changer for me (I have broken oven glass in prior ovens by spilling water on the glass trying to introduce steam lol). You can get EXCELLENT results with bread in this oven. There have been multiple threads on Houzz about how to get the best bread baking results with a CSO, and here is my method. I run the steam first for about 10 minutes, making sure that the oven cavity is good and steamy with plenty of condensation on the bottom of the oven. Then I load the bread loaf (or loaves), put it on auto steam bake, and find that the excess water in the oven provides even more spring to the loaf after the beginning steam phase is over and has cut over to higher baking temps. The Wolf CSO has another mode called "Convection Humid" which is great for quick breads. It seals the cavity during Convection so that steam cannot escape, thus making the bread more moist. Muffins and quick breads really shine in this mode. Side note, I use my M series to proof bread. The proof function works really well. If you make jams and jellies, the steam oven can also be used to do the canning step in replacement for a boiling water bath (BWB). The jars can be steamed to sanitize before filling, and then steamed at 210 degrees for 30 minutes. It works great, and best of all, no tip overs and sealing failures.

We replaced a Fisher Paykel gas cooktop with a 36" Wolf induction. It sits over a Kitchenaid wall oven. It was the only brand that would fit because it has the shallowest profile. That being said, we tend to use the second wall oven much more because it is easier to access. The 36" over the 30" oven looks fine however.

Like that Miele!
Wolf is coming out with a 5 way bridge. The 4 smaller burners bridge side to side, front to back, and all 4 at the same time.

Thank you all! I'm looking at April for this remodel, so a bit early to buy (especially as warranties usually run from date of purchase). But on the upside, some time for new stuff to come out maybe? The other feature I think I would like, which the kitchenaid doesn't have, is a child lock. I do have a four year old. She's been taught to stay away from the range, but impulse control obviously isn't 100 percent yet.

I appreciate all the suggestions!

I was just reading my wolf oven manual and says warranty starts with instal so it varies.

Depending on how important pancakes are to you -- I would just get a $30 electric countertop griddle.

They work so much better than then the ones that span burners.

No two burners on any stove work the same so with stovetop griddles you end up having to move food around a lot to cook evenly.

JennAire also makes a 36" with bridge element. I've had this one for about a year now and love the unit.

There is a Kitchenaid that has 2 bridge elements and 1 large element in the middle.

It has some positives and a few negatives, as you'll see in the reviews.

I also have the Jenn-Air 36" cook-top with two "bridge" elements. I love the induction but am totally unhappy with the supposedly bridge elements. The space between the burners does not heat up as in non-induction bridge elements. When you turn on the "bridge" element all it does is control the two burners at the same time. So my griddle has two hot spots - the pancakes cook poorly in the other non-heated areas. We'll probably opt for an electric countertop griddle as stir_fryi suggests.

The space between the burners does not heat up as in non-induction bridge elements.

Does anyone know if this function works differently on other brands that claim a "bridging" function?

I think that is typical.
Wolf told me that I could bridge my current Wolf but would have the same issue. If you plan to bridge, I would recommend a clad pan as a combination of steel and aluminum will spread the heat better.

I have an All Clad square griddle. It extends over the edge at the corners but if I warm it up, the heat expands to the corners and the pancakes are evenly browned. If I start to soon, the corners are lighter.
