WANTED: Told You I Was South! Told You I Was South!

I arrived home tonight and there was Kathleen's box sitting on my front porch! I just knew somehow that she was my swap partner. I'm sorry for the suspense, but photos will be posted tomorrow. Since I can't post photos until tomorrow I'm not telling you about the nice things inside until then either. I know, I know, I'm a spoilsport!

Beverly, there's another box coming UPS, prob Monday. So make Michelle wait till it all arrives.....lol
I hope you like what's in the box, I bought so many different things that are my favorites, and tried to get help from Marigene and Cindy M.
You can just tell me if anything was broken, but don't tell ..you know who... what's in the box.

You're welcome, swfr, I'm glad I could help. Few additional suggestions: Round the island seating area. A curved edge makes it easier for people at the counter to talk than when they are seated in a straight line. It looks like you've got room to do this. Just be sure to allow at least 60" between counter edge and table. If you plan to do grilling on the deck, I'd add a door closer to the kitchen area. You could do either a pair of sliding doors, as suggested above, or a run of windows book-ended by two French doors. If you slide the table a few inches closer to the exterior wall and steal a few inches from the pantry, you'd have enough room for a shallow (12"-15") cabinet against the pantry wall without losing adequate aisle space around your kitchen table. This could be your command central or a display cabinet. I think it would be nice if you had something in that space other than just a table. I recently inherited a lovely old oak table, which I adore, but now I've got to figure out a convenient place to store the table leaves. Add me to the list of people encouraging you to rethink the prep sink at the corner end of the island. That is prime landing space for items coming from the fridge, grocery bags coming in from the garage and items going to and from the dining room. I'm basing this on my frustration with my current kitchen's set-up. I have 16" of island counter for the above purposes and for setting down hot items coming out of the oven and it drives me crazy (admittedly, a short trip) that I don't have more room (I'm fixing this when I remodel). In your mind, walk through all the ways you'll use your kitchen and see if sticking with a corner prep sink will be an issue for you. You have a long enough island that moving the sink in from the corner will still give you plenty of room to prep on the island.

First off, can I say your avatar is adorable?! Love it. : ) I was looking back at the previous posts, and I think the minor tweak that Mama Goose suggested has some potential. I still vote for a door directly from the kitchen to the pantry. Please here me out... if you move the freezer into the pantry, then you can put a landing counter next to the fridge. Above it, you can put a standard MW that sits on a shelf, which would be very convenient. Even though you'd be paying a little bit more now to move a few studs, I'm guessing it would still be less expensive to do that + standard MW than the price of a fancy drawer MW. Just a thought. I'm not sure what you're planning for pantry storage, but a landing counter might be nice in there for things going in and out of the freezer. I'd love a counter in my pantry for some of the items I don't like on my counters: crocks of sauerkraut, fermenting kombucha, fermenting kefir, etc. I agree that setting this kitchen up and pretending to work in it is a good idea. One of the issues I've run into when the workings are on one side of the island, and the cleanup is on the other is that I end up playing ring around the island to get things. The prep sink does help with this somewhat. Picture making apple pie. The apples need to be washed. Would you rather wash them at the prep sink right by the fridge where they came from, or to run them around the island to the cleanup sink? I remember scenes like this from our old kitchen: What do you do when you go to bake at the island on the fridge side and you are missing measuring spoons. Where are they? In the DW. Run around the island, retrieve them from the DW. Go back to where I was working. Now I need to melt butter. Pull a stick out of the fridge. What shall I melt it in. A bowl? They're being stored on the other side of the island. Around the island I go to get a bowl, trot back and melt the butter in the MW. Then a child comes in and wants a drink, round the island again to help them get a glass, add your own scenarios ad infitum. By this point, cooking is starting to lose its thrill! I think this is why folks are trying to have you consider having the working side of the island so that it's on the same side as the cleanup sink. It helps reduce the circling around the island. I do like the fridge, freezer and pantry all in the same general location, if possible. This helps you to be able to retrieve the food items all from pretty much the same spot.

I keep getting told I'm crazy to want butcher block countertops

My husband would prefer the local marble be used around the perimeter, which may need to happen because there's a chance the butcher block manufacturers won't ship it with the sink hole cut as it may not be stable enough, and then we're back to the same place we were at with the Ikea countertops. Well not quite, but still needing to find a finishing carpenter willing to make that cut. It turns out that not even the butcher block makers like cutting undermount sink holes. BUT... the marble would be standard 1.25" tall, and our cabinet boxes are 34" from the floor. The minimum height of the cooktop surface of the induction range we've purchased is 36". I feel like a 3/4" difference between the counter height and cooktop is more of a deal breaker for me than the chance of the butcher block getting gunky around the sink. I can get the butcher block at 1.75" so there would just be a 1/4" difference between the cooktop and countertop.

And have I told you about my rag collection, dust rags, wash rags, old tee shirt rags. Good for dusting, mopping, wiping, cleaning the car, etc. How I would love to share my favorite rags!

Well I worried all weekend for nothing! I just knew it was me as I am the most south (I think). We were out of town, returning late Monday night and I worried about the package sitting on my door step for four days. I even called a neighbor to check for the box.

Beverly, take your time posting, I'm catching up with email and reading the forum so I'm in no hurry.

Sorry about your worry Cathy.

I'm sure Kathleen worked very hard trying to put together a swap package that I would like so I didn't want to post any peace-mil (sp?) pictures. I wanted all of it posted together. If the other box did get lost I will post pictures in a couple of days though. I don't want you ladies to be inside those caskets instead of out.
