noisy puter

Why is my computer humming or making this annoying noise all the time. It was always this way even when brand new.

Maybe it doesn't know the words. I know, I know, old as dirt.

It could be one of a few things things. Fan, hard drive, or power supply (really the fan in it). Could be any or all.

You say 'all the time' which points more towards a fan since your hard drive(s) should not be constantly spinning (working).

Open the case and physically observe the cooling fans. Are they all spinning freely. Is the noise emanating from a fan?

Could even be that there is a wire being hit by one of the fan blades.

Pick up the computer and shake it violently - ONLY KIDDING.

Get back and let us know if it's a fan. We will take it from there.

In the past, I don't remember the forum, they talked about the fan of a certain brand computer that made a loud noise even
when it was brand new. Some of them added a new fan inside for
cooling and disabled the fan that came with the computer.
They couldn't disable it by disconnectiong it, so they broke
the blades off.
If I find it I will post back.

OK; Buddy---you see how much you've been missed---don't be coy. When I pick up beer bottles along the roadside while walking my daughter's dog, I've often thought of you. Ohiomom, my grandma's apple masher is, I think, an early kind of food mill. It's got a metal cone with holes in it, a stand for the cone, and a wooden pestle designed to fit in the cone. You quarter the apples, cutting out the cores but not bothering to skin them; cook the apples till soft, put a bowl under the cone, dump the apples in the cone, and use the pestle to force the cooked apples through the holes. The apple sauce slides down the cone and into the bowl. The skins are left in the cone, and you scrape those out and do another batch. Then you taste test the applesauce and sweeten/add cinnamon as you prefer, and either can or freeze. It also works with tomatoes for making tomato sauce, but you have to cook the sauce down afterwards to reduce the liquid. If you google "apple masher" or "apple saucer" you can find them on antique sites. That one does have the built in speakers, mine does not but I use stand alone speakers anyway. In the 19" monitors yes you can still find the non widescreen models but I have not seen any in the larger size monitors which are non widescreen. If you have not set up and used a buy.com account before there are some codes available that will save you some money on that purchase for first time buyer. I use buy.com quite often. first time Buy.com customers only don't worry about expiration dates they are always available just google buy.com promo codes and you can find them.

I like the last one best.

I had a high pitched whine which I eventually pinned down to the monitor. I cut the refresh rate back one notch and it disapeared.

My computer makes a strange noise, like a fly buzzing for a second, then it sounds like something swats and it stops..

Some proprietary computers have a small dust system for the heatsink fan, perhaps there is vibration or the fan is just touching the duct. Could be the case itself, try holding the sides, front and top to see if this cures it.

My P4 heatsink fan was terribly loud so I replaced it with a MaxOrb heatsink with a 120mm fan. I had to trim the cooling fins where it fouled on the power supply but I now enjoy peace.
