video converter blocks my computer

I have a big problem with my recently purchased refurbished Sony video camera (dv cassette). I discovered that I'm not able to save the movie on a single DVD so, based on certain advices, I tried to convert it with a so-called video converting software - AVS video converter. The problem is that each time I start the conversion after a short time my computer blocks completely the only solution to bring it back to life is to disconnect it and then reconnect it to power source. Seems to be a weird problem and maybe itÂs a virus but my antivirus does not find anything.

What can I do to perform the conversion without blocking my computer? Could be a virus?

Marc, I need a lot more information.

First of all, what do you mean "blocks" you computer? What happens, specifically?

What are the specifications of you computer? I need to know CPU, Ram, hard drives and video card.

How are you downloading the video to your computer, Firewire?

I know that my CPU is Athlon 899 and I have 256 MB of RAM, but don't know how to find video card and hard drive specifications. The mouse doesn't move anymore, the computer does not respond, not even to ctrl-alt-delete command. And nothing happens when I press the shutdown button.

A quick note to say that DVDflick worked. I got the video's made - just in a nick of time (bc. I have a full day conference tomorrow). Now my daughter can bring her friend the videos (and scrapbook). DVDflick was amazingly easy compared to other things I tried. Once on the program, I printed the 6 page guide - which explained most of what I needed to know. Two things I had to figure out myself - and am posting here for others who may try this. 1 - on the Configure your Project tab, there are settings for video. If you want to change the resolution/file size (as I did to fit a 45 minute video on a standard dvd), you can adjust the bit rate). 2 - I would recommend on the burning settings (also under configure your project tab), choose to have it burn it to dvd, and verify, and eject. The first dvd I made I only selected burn it and verify. It burned it - ejected, reinserted and played it. But then the dvd tray was locked and couldn't be opened. This is somewhat frequent occurence with disc burning software - which wants to prevent you from accidentally opening the tray before it's done. The only way I could open the tray was to shut the computer, and hit the open disk tray button as it was rebooting. The next video I made, I selected eject when done - and it ejected it. For a while I thought the tray was broken - and tried the usual methods to release - like the paper clip in the tiny hole near the tray. And going to my computer, d:, eject disk. Nothing worked bc. the software was preventing it. Once my disk was ejected - and the software closed, the open and close tray works fine with other programs. Thanks so much. This was a great program. Just curious if convertxtodvd would get me additional features. I can see burning many dvd's for people (we seem to be the videographers of many social gatherings and I'd like to give dvd's to people who were part of the plans). DVDflick worked great - but I don't mind paying a little if it gets me more features. Any thoughts? Thanks so much. You saved me. Lynn.

"Doing those will require that I learn more." Truthfully, I had never tried downloading captions from Youtube until you mentioned it so... I learned a little too, which is a good thing, I think. Also, I probably didn't follow your method precisely in that I did not use Freemake Video Downloader to get the video from Youtube. I used one of the several Youtube video downloader add-ons to get the video sitting on my desktop in front of me to work with. I then used the Greasemonkey script to download the ".srt"(subtitles) file to my desktop beside the video. Then I used Freemake Video Convertor to open the video, add the subtitles file, and finally to convert to DVD. Using that method I have subtitles hard-coded into the resulting DVD files. Using that method worked for me. Honestly, I've never used the Freemake downloader but I assume it should work the same. BTW, if you installed the Grease Monkey add-on and then(after installing GM) installed(by clicking the green "Install" button in the upper right corner) the captions download script, the little Grease Monkey icon should go from grayed out to active(?) when you go to the video page you linked above. If it does, you should automatically have the subtitle download buttons since that's what the script is for. Good luck. Edit: Just for fun, here are the captions in "timed-text" format, not that they would do you any good without converting them to "srt" but still, it's interesting. http://video.google.com/timedtext?lang=en&v=c2aF6-RXs0Y. Notice the "v=video_id" part on the end. I assume you could use that as a template to get timed-text for any Youtube video having captions. Just guessing though. I got that from the source of the Greasemonkey script.

Video Download Converter Toolbar got on your computer after you have installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker. This browser hijacker is also bundled within the custom installer on many download sites (examples: CNET, Brothersoft or Softonic), so if you have downloaded a software from these websites, chances are that VideoDownloadConverter was installed during the software setup process. I agree; not as efficient is a good way to put it. Chrome & Firefox do it so much better with everything; even saving favorites. I tried safari & found it very slow; so FF was the 1st to go in. I then added Chrome & am broken hearted they won't support my version OS any more. I have 2 FB profiles so I use one in FF & 1 in chrome. They both open different groups of pages when I open them. The only time I use Safari is when I'm on the 3rd FB profile for my community. I have to make sure to click the apple icon to end the program after I close it or it will continue to use memory.

Working with video, even just converting it from one format to another is extremely taxing on the computer requires a fairly large amount of memory. With 256 MB of ram, my first thought is that your computer is paging constantly to the hard drive. If your hard drive is almost full or extremely fragmented, your system will lock up and crash. Let me explain.

If I told you I was going to give you a ten digit phone number (area code + number) and asked you to remember it for a few minutes, you'd probably be able to do this from memory.

Now If I told you that I was going to give you 5 ten digit phone numbers and asked you to do the same, what would you do? You'd most likely need to write it down on paper to be able to give it back to me. Right?

This is the same thing that happens with the computer. The computer uses the ram in the same way you'd be able to memorize the first number. When it runs out of ram to do this, it needs to jot the information down, temporarily. It does this on a hard drive with what is called a paging file.

Under default settings, the paging file size is managed by the operating system. If your computers hard drive is full to the point that the paging file is not what the operating system requires it will most likely crash. This can also happen with a heavily fragmented hard drive.

Anyway, I went on a tangent there. I would recommend that you increase your system ram. The more the better, especially if your going to work with video.

To get info on hard drive. Click my computer, then right click on your "C" drive and select properties. It will show you a graphical representation of the hard drive with free and used space. From this box you can select the "tools" tab and then the "defragment" utility to defrag the hard drive. Note that with 256 MB of ram, it will take an extremely long time if the hard drive is heavily fragmented and there is even the possibility it will crash. Do this overnight.

The information on the video card can be found in the device manager located in the system properties which can be accessed int eh control panel. Control panel - system - hardware - device manager. Select display drivers - then your video card should show.
