Can't Install Microsoft Update

Hi all

Got a message on the computer that Microsoft had an update for me to install, so I clicked to install it and then got this message:

Some updates could not be installed.

The following updates were not installed: Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

What is this and how can I get it installed (if I really need it) ?

If you havent had something tell you it needs it, you probably dont need it. But it sounds like something on your computer does use dotNet so the upgrade should be installed for perhaps security or a bug fix.

Might try downloading it to your desktop then install it, rather than do the online install. It will be available at download.microsoft.com

Close all open windows and turn off all instant messaging, and anything else that is simple to turn off before installing it.

Its sort of universal generic program modules/components that some programs will use.
Saves you duplication of files on your hard drive, and download bytes too, when you install new programmers that use those .NET items for their programs.

Revo uninstaller is sort of a combined way to uninstall programs and clean up the registry for that programs left overs and some of the left over files/folders it might leave. It's not always 100% effective but its better than windows uninstall - which is really just running the programmers uninstaller. You can try to use revo... I always run it on its most aggressive scan. . To me it sounds like you might need to reinstall AVG 12 the older version..... disable it.... uninstall it maybe with Revo first... then follow up with the AVG uninstall tool .. most want you to run that tool from safe mode. I do not do them, I have not had any programs that required me to update the .NET framework, if at some point you do use a program that needs it the program will let you know and give you the info for which one it needs. Many of them can cause problems. If you review the patch list chart Susan Bradley puts out you can see what she recommends. problem-patch chart and an earlier one problem-patch chart

probably when you went to IE8 the Active X features that are normally active in the older versions of IE were all disabled. I agree with zep you can enable the active x for your windows update site. Here is a link that might be useful: active x with windows updates

Mikie I went to the site you linked me to and found the program I couldn't install before.

I downloaded it from the site and now that little yellow shield is gone from my taskbar so I guess it worked.

If you want you can go to update.microsoft.com and on the left there will probably be a link to review your updates history. There it will show updates and their success's or failures.
They sometimes will have fix-it notes for failed updates.

Well I see the update I thought I installed didn't work. It says it failed. Shows each time I tried to install it.

Microsoft update newsgroups are talking about nothing else.

It seems the manual update is the way to go to correct this.

Wish I would have seen this post earlier. I had a problem a while back with a Net Frame update. I finally had to install it in safe mode to get it to work right. This might have been an instant cure here too.

FYI, and just slightly off-topic:

I had been using WindizUpdate (for FF) to retrieve/install my updates, instead of working through IE. But, for any who may have been using Windiz to get their MS updates (or had been thinking about it) there's bad news:

My computer just did a huge update while I was away from the machine.
Checked my update history and it was the fix, downloaded and installed with a nice green checkmark.

Thought if I waited long enough Billy's crew would fix their booboo.
