Microsoft Updates - Keeps Failing

Hi it's me again.

Running Windows XP Media Center. I see a little yellow shield at the bottom right. Tells me there are Microsoft Updates to be installed. I click to install them and keep getting this message:

Some Updates Could Not Be Installed -

The following updates were not installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)

I would think it's important to keep on top of these updates; I'm set to automatically upload them but this is not working.

Any suggestions? Hopefully this wont be as long and drawn out as my other issue ..... what was that ... 56 posts? haha!

Just a side note: I recently installed Google Chrome. Could this be an issue with the MS Updates not installing?

Quite possible if you were attempting to update in Chrome. MS does not like you using the competition to get at their updates. Did you try updating in IE?

On the very rare occurences thatI have had failures using MS update I disabled my antivirus and ALL other system monitoring applications and was then successful. Perhaps?

The hardest part was remembering to enable the applications.

Your second post should have been the first one to get the best help. No problem, now the picture is clearer. Tell us what you have done, if anything, to resolve your issues. Windows 7 is quite good at fixing itself so let's start there and have you report back what happens. click Start click Control panel You should see a heading 'System and Security', click the bottom link to 'Find and fix a problem. At the bottom of the next page is the option to 'Fix problems with Windows updates, click that. The next window says 'Next' so foloow along to have the test completed. What program/s are you using for anti virus and anti malware?

Recently I had failed updates also. My solution was to write down the K number assigned to each update and searched for it at the Microsoft Updates website. As I found each individual update I downloaded and installed manually. I had to do that for each update. Try doing it like that and you might eventually get them installed. A good program to have would be Belarc that can tell you exactly what update you are missing. Here is a link that might be useful: Belarc website

The Microsoft link above is the best I can do for now, looks like a nightmare to me with Netframe work involved. There's a tool you can run that may or may not help, Windows update readiness tool. Dial-a fix (XP Only) may also help it's a tool that re-registers all the windows up-Date dlls. Lots of others have had issue with it too!

While it's a good idea not to run windows with administrator rights while browsing the web because it just makes it easier for malware to secretly dowload and install, unfortunately, I believe running as a limited user will not permit some windows updates to install. So when you tried to install windows updates, was it as administrator or limited user? Below is a support page from Microsoft.

You also may want to make sure you are virus free. There are many online scans available that you can run without going through the bother of installing as evidenced by this article:

Also, you may want to run an online scan at secunia to see if you have all patches needed for installed applications:

that update is failing for many people, there is a discussion about the problem over on BBR. Personally I would just leave it alone for a while, I know they have just issued an update for that update to try to fix part of it.
There is a work around mentioned on BBR thread if you want to follow the discussion.

that is the original thread for all the updates that day and on down in the pages you find the issues being discussed.

I keep my windows computers at .net 1.1 and have not had a problem with any programs yet, if I ever install something that tells me I need a newer version I will consider it then. Are you running stuff that has required newer .net?

Raven, I'm not running other things that has required a newer .net that I know of.

I've never had problems installing the updates until til past week. I'm glad to hear it's not just me - I'll give it some time and try again next week.

Graylight, I am running Windows as Administrator, I didnt know to do it any other way.

Give yourself some time and try those updates again. They would not install for me the first time around. I just waited several days and then they installed with no problem at all. Who knows?

Shaun, I'm having trouble with one of the net framework updates too but KB953297, have XP SP2. After a half dozen failures to install over about 8 days, I used Microsoft online support and ran, submitted the diagnostic scan they offer.

We may not be having exactly the same problem, but the response I rec'd this morning was 'The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component'. Microsoft gave me a set of instructions/links that begin with downloading a Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, removing .NET Framework 1.1, reinstalling ,NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and its updates.

I've got dialup so will be time consuming and I had too much else going on today to work on it...I may try over the weekend.

morz8, I followed their instructions to do the same thing last week and it worked. But now I've got more updates and they won't install again.
