IE7 cannot display this web page

I have searched the threads and can't find this exact problem. I am asking for my brother. He has a Toshiba laptop..XP Home... He uses AVG Anti-V...

IE will open only certain websites. All of his Favorites, and Yahoo ...but most of the ones he types in including Google gets the Cannot display webpage error. I have had him dump cookies Temp files History...we did the reset IE in Advanced options. I have had him run Malwarebytes,do an AVG scan and install Spywareblaster...

He isn't really sure about computers and we are doing this over the phone...I am at my wits end because of some pages opening and others not...

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Oh I forgot ...he is using Windows firewall..

Is this a new behavior? Is there any possibility that he is typing in a comma rather than a period when he enters the URL manually? Clearing his DNS cache may help. Ask him to click on Start and Run, then type in ipconfig /flushdns (there is a space between the g and the /) and press enter. He may see a very brief black screen, but he may not. This will clear out any stored entries in the DNS cache.

I would not stay with IE6 google has just put out info it will no longer support IE6 and many other websites have gone along with them on that it is just too hard for them to continue to support so many versions, go to IE7 or 8 or as mentioned above go with firefox also but you still need to move away from Ie6 on your pc because it is very insecure so even if you do not use it you need to update it. I use firefox only unless I have to do a windows update that is the only time I use IE but I do still keep it updated. Gmail, Google Calendar Also To Drop IE6 Support Google Phasing Out Support For IE6 in 2010 that should be good evidence as to why it needs to be replaced.

I, too, am a former Verizon, and now Frontier, customer, but I recently upgraded to fiber optic. When I used to have Verizon DSL, the main problem was that the connection would sometimes slow down, or, all of a sudden, I couldn't connect to anything at all. This could happen once every 2 months, or 10 times a day. Re-booting your DSL router, as zep516 suggests, would generally clear the problem. This doesn't mean DSL is bad, it just means that some people have problems with it. In any case, I've found that having Frontier as a provider is an improvement over Verizon. The Frontier tech support folks are friendlier and willing to spend more time with you, so don't hesitate to contact them if this problem persists. For example, it's possible that there are some simple changes to the router settings that would help, and maybe they could assist you with that.

I solved the problem, but only by uninstalling IE7, checking settings in the restored IE6 (they were all set to Custom), was able to restore IE6 settings to default because the choice was still there. Then, I downloaded IE7 again and installed, and now all is well. I had Googled my problem, but none of the sites I found addressed the particular problem I was having. This took quite a while, but I'm thinking something must have been amiss with either the original installation of IE7 or one of the later updates. Yes, Mikie, I do have adminstrator rights, but none of the "easy" things would fix it. This is on my laptop, and I checked my desktop and everything was as it should be, with sliders and all. At least, "ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL".

Check the postings on the link below to see if any of those help. My wife's computer behaves in a similar fashion and I made an odd discovery. She uses IE7 and if we open one instance of IE7 then click links in emails or on web pages then she could open those pages in a new window, not a tab of IE7. Close both windows and try again with no window already open - it failed to open. Strange. One day......... Here is a link that might be useful: Previous thread on this issue

Thanks pkponder..He is going to call me back later I will tell him to try this. Yes it is a pretty new problem. He said when he shut off his computer Sunday night all was ok...then Monday he was trying to do a Google search on a subject and got IE's error...then he tried typing in other sites and same thing. He then tried his Favorites and they all work...I am going to tell him to type in an address of one of his Favs and see what happens then ..can't hurt...LOL..
