Kerio Personal Firewall Issue

Hi,

I have KPF installed on three computers in my family: two desktops and a HP Pavilion laptop. The laptop recently had problems and the OS was completely and professionally reinstalled/upgraded. The system was XP SP2, but it's now SP3. It's working quite well except that the Kerio firewall (which had no problems when the laptop had the other SP) now frequently shows an error ("Blocked by SPF" (Sunbelt Personal Firewall)). This message never came/comes up on our desktops, each of which have XP SP2. I'm wondering if SP3 is causing some problems. I checked at the Sunbelt site but couldn't find anything in the faq to help me find out how to allow certain sites. The KPF 'configuration' screen is somewhat confusing to me, since I'm still a 'learner.'

Any suggestions/comments ?

Well you could of course go to add remove and remove sp3 and see if that corrected the problem then try to install it again but I would definitely try the re-install while in safe mode so that all un-necessary items are not loaded, sp3 is a problem child for a lot of programs and firewalls can have issues, which is why they highly advise disabling all security programs prior to install or do it in safe mode, not knowing how or in what order the person did yours it would be hard to know.

I have not used Kerio but I know a lot of people on BBR do, so a good place to go and ask would be there on the security section of the forums.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, we just paid a 'computer guy' $75 to do the update/install for us and he did so after wiping the HD and loading XP SP3 from his own disc. So his installation was about as 'clean' as possible -- no existing programs to complicate or interfere with things, AFAIK. We really don't want to spend more money on a re-installation. And I wouldn't want to do anything like this on my own (esp. not on dial-up !!). :-)

And I'll check out the link you provided. And if worse comes to worse I can always try Commodo.

You say "The engine ran smooth etc." And WHEN was the last time that engine RAN smooth" 2 days prior to swapping? Or, last year? You really ought to start a new thread to cover this issue. It might be helpful to some of us if you will provide the engine model number and type number you find stamped or listed on a decal ON THE ENGINE. And you need to give the numbers for both engines and tell us which one you took out and which one is the replacement. What about the fuel hoses you are using? Are they new? If the Yardman tractor had sat for a long time in an inoperable condition, the inevitable varnish that will form inside the hoses may be breaking loose and migrating into the carb.

Thanks for the comments about NetVeda. I'll steer clear of it for now, until/unless I hear something really good about it in the future. I was only looking at Gizmo's site because (after a reinstallation of my XP SP3 OS) Online Armor wasn't playing nice with Avast (or vice verse). I tried various suggestions I noticed on the support forums regarding this issue but to no avail in my case. (At least I was glad to know others had the same problem !) I really like OA firewall -- due in part to Gizmo's review and his pointing out that it passed the leak test (which I confirmed on my own when I first installed it) -- so I didn't want to 'downgrade' to Kerio/Sunbelt again. Instead, I had to bid Adieu to Avast and said 'hello' to Avira (which is apparently just a bit more well-liked these days). So far, no problems. :-) Thanks again for the input ! Scott

This thread has become like a train wreck to me. I can't stop looking at the replies but I will hopefully soon. I appreciate the time taken to reply, even though some of the comments have been a little bizarre. Thank you, mojomom, and a couple others, for being voices of reason in this *most confusing post ever*. I know nothing about building. I understand if people are alarmed that this is somehow a disaster, but that said, it is what it is. It is an existing and ongoing project. I won't repeat that others have lived here for 10 years or so, but I guess I just did. I have no pictures and will not be driving there to take them. Picture a brick rectangle with a roof and windows and cement floor. No walls at all. There are windows in this rectangle, four on each floor. It has been measured out...surveyed??...surely you know what I mean, please no critical comment on my choice of words there. Each measure space is a unit. That is how it looks and that is what the picture would show. I have already talked to: Codes, Architect, Builder, one neighbor but the neighbor was a long time ago and they are the ones who have lived there for so long. There's is totally finished and beautiful. At this point all I'm hoping to find is another estimate for the firewall. That's it. The reason I keep coming back to this site is because I can't stop trying to explain just how it looks...not how it came to be, why it happened, why it's probably a ponzi scheme, whether or not there are squatters. I think that's where this post went astray when the first response started yelling about SQUATTERS.

I use and love zonealarm, I personally use an older version of zonealarm pro but they do have a free version available also.

comodo is good but it really pops up a lot and many people think it is a bit too intrusive especially for novice users.

Thanks again for the comments ! I had chosen to try Commodo because it was the #2 pick at the site you recommend on occasion (techsupportalert). But, since the actual user of the laptop in question (my aunt, a computer novice), I appreciate your warning about that firewall. I'll try one of the others, though likely not ZA, since I have tried that on other computers of ours and it unfortunately caused issues. I'm sure one of your other suggested firewalls will do the trick, though, if I can't get Sunbelt's Kerio FW squared away.

I did a quick Google on the Kerio configuration. It sounds as if you need to place the websites that generate the error into the exception list. Here is the text that I found using Yahoo Mail as an example (you would of course type in *.www.whatever website you want.com:

"Double-click the Kerio Personal Firewall icon to open the firewall configuration.
Click the Web tab on the left.
In the Site Exceptions tab, click the "Add" button, and enter *.mail.yahoo.com for the www server address. Yes, you've read this correctlyÂan asterisk, followed by a period, then mail-dot-yahoo-dot-com.
Click "OK."
Click "OK" to save and close the configuration.
