Kitchenaid stand mixer... keep or not?
Comments (21)You should note that depending upon the model KA you got, it may or may not stand up to a daily kneading of bread dough. The smaller models are designed to handle stiffer doughs only once in a while, but not every day continually. As a mixer for cakes, icings, cookie dough, etc., the KA is a kitchen staple. I have one of the old 4-qt Hobart-made KAs and I would no more get rid of it (despite its awful color) than I would trade my DH, lol. Be aware that the KA mixes so well, mixing times in many recipes have to be adjusted. If it says beat for 5 minutes, I beat for 2 min. Don't walk away when you're beating whipping cream unless it's only 2 steps and you're coming right back....it will be butter before you know it. I will say that I've bought two accessories that have made the KA perfect for my needs, over the last 35 years. First, I have a second mixing bowl and whisk attachment. This means when I do a recipe that involves making a meringue and folding it into a batter, I don't have to clean out the bowl and whisk to do them separately - I just switch out the bowl and whisk. Second, I bought one of those new scrape-the-bowl-clean paddles. I don't use them for everything, but for certain recipes they are amazingly useful. The one issue with stand mixers is having to scrape the bowl down (no matter what brand of mixer); this attachment completely eliminates that problem. I don't use it every day, but I'm thankful every time I do use it, that I finally spent the $100 (35 yrs ago that was a LOT of $$ for a mixer!) to buy the KA stand mixer....See MoreWhat color is your KitchenAid stand mixer?
Comments (105)What a great thread - I have the original white, lift bowl Model K 5A. And I have to confess that many times over the years I've been tempted by the siren call of those glorious cobalt, pistachio and and chrome machines. But I have a strong sentimental attachment to my Kitchen Aid and I still remember the day my husband and I purchased it. While waiting to have the tires changed on our 1971 Plymouth Duster we wandered across the parking lot to a Best Products store. He spied me eyeing the mixer and encouraged me to buy it. I thought it was too extravagant - we were living on one income and he still had 2 more years of med school. But we had been scrimping and watching every penny and DH was working in the lab on weekends so he bought it for me. I still have the receipt, I use it as a bookmark inside my Joy of Cooking. That was 11/20/1976 and I paid $164.89 for it. And it's also the first thing I look for when I check a bridal registry - it's my favorite gift. Comments (41)I know! It's difficult! I used to sell Pampered Chef and "earned" my white one for free about 12 years ago. I admit I purchased the yellow today : ) With the $30 back and the free extra attachment, and 5 easy payments plus only $10 shipping I couldn't resist! Plus I used ebates and got 2.5% off that way. There's a free subscription also to Food and Wine Magazine or some other Travel magazine when you do the rebate. Unfortunately there was tax but still was a good deal : ) Good luck!...See MoreKitchenaid Stand Mixer Food Grinder
Comments (1)We have ground lots and lots of meat with ours. We have never had the problem you described. That sounds like a defective attachment....See Morebryansda
