camera memory card problem

I have an HP laptop Win XP with a slot on the side to read the photos or data on the memory card. A panasonic 16 MB card came with the camera and I can still take a picture on that card, insert it in the side of the laptop and it recognizes the removable drive.

I purchased a 2GB Kingston card - took pictures - and when I put the card in the side of the laptop, it does not recognize it - therefore no pictures. If I wire the camera to the laptop - I can download the pictures.

Figured there might be a problem with that card so I purchased a 2 Gb San Disk card today - took a couple pictures - stuck it in the side of the laptop and it will not recognize that card.

Put the 16 mb card back in and it recognizes it immediately.

Anybody got any idea why this would happen? They are all SD cards - exactly the same size - look exactly alike...but?

I'd appreciate some help here.

I am looking forward to your responces to this as my HP printer does this same thing..I cannot even use the picture machines at Walmart either so I know its not my printer..Its something with the card itself..Mine is the SD card as well..

It's a limitation of the card reader, not the card. Check the specs for your card reader. Some can't read cards over a certain size.

My card reader reads my 128MB and 1GB cards fine. For my 2GB card, I have to connect my camera directly to the the PC using the USB connection.

Yep, all I do is pop it in and go but let me warn you, I have an Olympus camera that will not take anything larger than a 512mb card so make certain *before* you get to the wedding that A) it is the correct type of card for your camera B) that your camera will accept the 2G size. But over and above everything else, have a great time at the wedding (which of course would be difficult if your camera won't take pictures.) Jodi-

Sorry to be so long getting back to you - but yes I have the original card that came with the camera..... 16 mb and it works. Also a 512 mb that is at home.... bought the 2Gb card just before coming down south. From what I've been reading I'm starting to believe this 3 yr. old laptop just doesn't read the new 2 Gb cards that were not available 3 yrs. ago. Someone suggested trying a $10 card reader - I might do that. Haven't decided what to try next. Elaine

Moonshadow, I've not looked at the C180, but our daughters first digital was in the C series and it was super easy to use. Hers was purchased with one of Kodaks little printers. The first time she sent home prints of photos she'd taken and called to see if we'd gotten them I asked her why she wasn't using her printer. She said she'd used it. I was shocked at how wonderful this little tiny printer printed 4x6 inch photos with the quality of being professionally printed. I'd recommend getting her the printer also. The print paper and ink is very reasonable and if I remember right costs a bit more than taking the photos to Walgreens, but then you add in the gas and time and it's a great deal. Gosh, I just tried to search for them and I can't even find them for sale on their site. I wonder if they quit making them. Maybe they figure their newer combo printer scanner copiers are inexpensive enough and sell more that they didn't need the little printer docks anymore. If I find one somewhere online I'll let you know. But yes, even my camera which is aimed at someone that takes photos and is close to an SLR is extrememly easy to manage all the buttons and controls.

I'm so glad I'm not alone with this problem. My friend bought the same SD disk 2 GB - and her Kodak CX7220 camera won't save pictures to it - even though her camera clearly uses an SD card?????? Maybe it's time to return these cards.
By the way her laptop is a Toshiba just one yr. old and laptop won't recognize the card either........certainly is a puzzle.

Many years ago I had a nikon digital camera that only took MB cards and they came out with a firmware update so it would accept much larger cards. Same deal with a Kodak. Same deal with a Sandisk card reader.

Maybe if you check the makers download files for your model numbers, you might get lucky.

I'm willing to try anything mikie. So for my friend, you are suggesting I look for a firmware update for her Kodak camera and her computer...cause it doesn't work with either.

And for myself, since the card works with my camera, but not my computer.....I should check for a firmware update for my computer?

I'll see what I can find, hope you're right.....I'll go hunting. It's worth a try.

Yes, there were limitations on older laptops, cameras, printers because in most cases, 2GB and higher cards were not invented yet. So check with the manufacturer of the devices and as mikie said, you might get lucky

Elaine if HP do not have updated drivers to cure this try phoning the store where you bought the 2 gig Kingston card and seek advice.

Perhaps something as simple as an external card reader might cure the problem. I seem to remember you live in Mississauga, if so Canada Computes at Eglinton and Cawthra have a selection of readers for $10. Don't expect too much advice from them though. Good prices but not too helpful with questions.

Off to check out my wife's 2 gig memory stick duo now, you have got me thinking.........

In case anybody is interested in this - the solution was to buy a $15 card reader at Staples (looks just like a flash drive or memory stick, except you put the camera card in the side of it). "Someone" was right when they said my laptop card reader at 4 yrs. old was just too old to read that size memory card. Guess a 2GB card had not been invented at that time. Technology changes every day!
