a memory card problem

All of a sudden the pictures on my memory card will not transfer to my computer. The five pictures that I took yesterday are shown on my camera but when I insert in my HP 4500 ALL IN ONE printer they do not transfer. I've never had such a problem. This is the only memory card I have ever had. Could it be just old all of a sudden? The printer is connected properly..no changes there. I hope someone can help me. I find I get on the mark answers more quickly from this forum than going to a owner support web site. Thanks to all!

I presume you are not getting a notice of a 'new' drive being found when you insert the card?

Try right click on Start
click Explore after inserting the memory card and see if it is listed on the left side.
If so click on it to hopefully view the images on the right side of your screen.
You then click on those to highlight, right click on the highlight and click 'Copy' then paste it into the folder of your choice.

Reboot your system and try again. Assuming you use the "safely remove" process sometimes you can shut down the card port accidently.

If you do not use the "safely remove" process you may have answered your question. One of the potential results of not removing the card properly is the media becomes read-only.

Yes Mary, you are reading right. There are several softwares that allow you to download free or purchased designs from the internet to your computer. Then you transfer from computer to the 'cardwriting box/card' for using in your machine. The most popular is the Brother PED Basic that I mentioned above. It only writes .pes format, which is what the 270 uses, and can be bought...sometimes used, from ebay. Normally, you can find new there, as well as Walmart on line, Allbrands.com, and other sites. You may pay from $50to $100+. Then you can download a free software to change other design formats to .pes for your machine to use. There are many many free designs available and a good place to start is to join Sewforum.com. It is a forum for embroiderers, where you can ask questions, request someone create a design for you free or for fee. It is not very active now as the site is also on Facebook, but still, there are thousands of free designs still there. I hope I have explained-helped you. Good luck!

I really hate to try anything like that because it's not my camera....I'd hate it to ruin the camera too. I am going to leave well enough alone at this point! LOL.....My luck I'll end up buying her a new camera too! I just bought her a new card. She said not to, but I feel like it was I was the last person to touch the card, I should replace it. I was just happy to be able to recover her pictures she had in there. She keeps pictures in her camera forever and there was some as far back as Feb. in there. A lot of them were of Austin, his birthday party, Easter, etc. She doesn't have a cd burner on her computer so she can only save them on her camera or on the computer. I told her neither one are for safe keeping and she need to have them put onto cd's before she loses them all. Then this happens while was looking at her pictures! LOL...I am so happy to have recovered them for her, I was so afraid I lost them. There were a few of the last few days that I couldn't recover, but she said they are no big deal. She hasn't had the card out of the camera in a year because she uses the cables to transfer them to her computer. First time out and I'm the one who took it out...and it screws up! It figures!

I also have a cannon about that age and it clearly states it will not take anything over a 2 GB SD card. That would definitely be my guess as to why you get that error. I agree the point of the memory card is to use it to temporarily store the pictures on the camera till you can off load them to your pc and burn them to cd or whatever medium you choose, take the card in and have them printed out or what ever. Once you do that you have all the space on the card available again. I never use the cable to transfer pictures and never use any software from the camera it is just not needed when you can so easily use the memory card in a memory card reader.

A new memory card to be used in a camera should always be formatted in the camera before its first use. However, unlike IowaGirl's standard practice, you shouldn't reformat it every time you reinsert the card into the same camera. You will only shorten its life that way. A card, generally speaking, can only be reformatted a certain number of times. The better quality card can be reformatted more times than a lesser quality card, but, nonetheless, it will reach the end of its "formattable life" sooner or later -- sooner if you reformat a lot. And there's really no reason to reformat it unless it's acting up. Many memory cards intended for use in cameras come with free image recovery software. When you delete a picture (or a data file), it is still recoverable as long as it hasn't become corrupted. When you delete something, it's not really removed from the card/disk/hard drive. All that happens is that a command is given that the area of the media that was used to store that image/file is now available to be used for something else to be saved. And there is more sophisticated software available that can recover images/data files even after something new has been saved over it -- that's what happens, for example, when forensic teams work with hard drives when crimes are committed.

Oh my goodness, I had no idea there was a wrong way of installing and un-nstalling a memory card from a camera to a desktop. Does that apply to X-P SP3???

It applies to any and all devices that you put into ports on your computer regardless of the operating system your computer is running. A memory card, a "thumb" drive, an external hard drive, or anything that plugs into a USB port or a memory reader port on a computer should only be removed after clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon to stop any activity on the device. Otherwise you risk damaging the device or the port on the computer and losing information stored on the device.

As you can probably tell by now, I haven't used a memory card very often. The next time I will use it correctly.
