how to clean oven floor safely (Fisher Paykel blue interior)

I am madly in love with my Fisher and Paykel double wall oven! It is a discontinued model, OD302SS. It has the pretty blue enamel interior. From what I understand, if I use the self cleaning mode, the enamel will flake or chip...also I keep hearing that F&Ps as well as other double wall ovens have electrical issues after using the self clean mode. I want to avoid this, of course. However, the F&P manual says this...

"Do not use oven cleaners. No commercial oven cleaner or oven liner protective coating of any

kind should be used in or around any part of the oven."

Do all oven manuals say this? Any opinions or input? Thanks!

Oven cleaners will not physically damage the interior finish of a self-cleaning unit, which is a normal porcelain finish like manual-clean ovens. The reason chemical cleaners are not to be used on self-cleaners is that it's largely impossible to fully rinse away the cleaner, and the chemical residue can generate noxious/toxic fumes when a high-temp self-clean cycle is next run (the temp gets over 900F).

Technically you can use oven cleaner, but a self-clean cycle should *never* be run again.

The reports you've run across regarding damage to the finish after self-cleaning likely involved a factory flaw on the finish and should not occur as a matter of normal course.

The electrical problems involve overheating in cases of electronic controls not being properly cooled, causing a thermal safety fuse to blow. Overheating also, of course, should not occur under normal usage and cleaning conditions. At least one brand had the overheating problem caused by the cooling blower being of insufficient capacity. Other instances could be caused by improper installation, particularly when wall ovens are involved since the unit is installed into a wall cavity. I've rarely heard of such problems with free-standing ranges.

The sides are harder, but Trailrunner gave us this great tip that works for the floor: Sprinkle the whole affected area with baking soda. Cover with rags or paper towels, pour on a little boiling hot water, just to moisten (not to make it run away). Leave overnight. The gunk will have loosened by morning. If it's very thick and crusty (badly bubbled over casserole, for example), it might need to be done twice, but it works, and it's really easy.

I've also found that for the stubborn, clingy grease marks on the sides of the oven, that seemed fused into place, an inexpensive steamer and a little elbow grease with a rough cloth works well.

If you read the first posting by the person who reported recent problems with her Monogram ovens (her first posting trashed Eurostoves for various appliance difficulties), not everyone ended up on her side about it. She definitely has had appliance issues with multiple mfgs, no question about that, but she comes off as a very impatient, demanding, customer. Admittedly she spent many thousands of $$$ on her kitchen appliances, so it's understandable she was upset. I'd be more concerned that she needed service on both Monogram ovens, not about the response of Monogram per se. F&P is a great company, but don't kid yourself that they get repairs done any faster than anyone else - they're just more pleasant about it. It took me over six weeks and 4 visits to get a single part replaced on my F&P dryer. Service is the weak point in almost all companies. F&P and Monogram, along with a few others, at least pay some attention to this issue. Other companies, such as LG, all the Siemens companies, Viking, are infamous for being unhelpful even to dealers. It's a big reason why one needs to be careful about who to buy from, not just what brand and how much. You want to look at the overall number of responses on a brand, and weigh good vs bad experiences on a percentage basis. Any company is going to make some lemons, that's a given with mfg. It's how the dealer and mfg treat you afterwards that can make you either a satisfied or dissatisfied customer. The odds are higher you'll be satisfied with certain companies, but like Lincoln said, you can't please all the people all the time. If there was a company that could - we'd ALL be buying from them, LOL!

I am also looking at the F&P ranges. I thought I was going to go with BS, but at ~$13,000 for the range with a custom color, it is hard to justify. Yesterday I went to the appliance store with a stack of 6 pans, including a full-size restaurant sheet pan to see how big the big ovens in 48" ranges were. When I went into the appliance store, I thought I was going to order the KitchenAid range in cobalt blue. It turns out that the big oven in the Kitchenaid range isn't any bigger than the oven in the 30" range I have right now. Ditto Wolf, Thermador, and Jenn-air (they didn't have a Viking 48" range on the floor). The only one that had a big oven that was bigger enough to be meaningful was the F&P. (since I am acting as the GC on our new house, they are offering me the builder's price, which puts this range at right around $6300 -- compared to $12k for retail). I am still looking for more info on this range (so hard to find reviews of it), but I like the lack of a touch screen (which rules out a meat thermometer and timer, which would both need a screen of some kind). I really liked the weight of the doors and the smooth-glide shelves. Also, the design of the stove top looks like cleaning up would be easy. I used to have a Viking and cleaning up was such a chore. I would love any other thoughts on this. Thanks!

I started real basic and then just tried things to see if it works. I put a lot of large trays and cutting boards down the right hand side. I put a lot of small bowls on the shelves to the left. Large utensils like bbq tongs in the place they say serving dishes. I learned how to load glad bowl lids by trial and error. I will say that unlike standard dishwashers you can really pack this thing and it still gets everything spotless. The upper right front corner on top is the only spot that is a dead zone. They have diagrams. One for New Zealand has a lot of wine glasses. One for UK has a lot of tea cups and serving dishes. One for US that uses both drawers. Best part is that the captain of the dishwasher loading police, my bil, is rendered speechless since he doesn't know the right way to load it.

The buttons were a problem, not because of how they look, but because they don't really 'seat' in anything behind the panel, so they tend to shift a little, so don't necessarily 'catch' and control things on the first try. Like spinning it and not getting any changes. Or the main button sticks and then the rest don't respond. If you try it a couple times, it will eventually work, but that shouldn't have to be the case. Just not a great design...Unless they've made a change. The one I had was one of the first of that style. As for 'clean'...It's a clean looking design, but mirrored black glass only stays that way with some work and constant attention. With the amount of baking we do and the number of kids working in my kitchen who don't pay that much attention to 'detailing' the appliances, I wasn't a fan. I can recommend it as having great baking performance, and the racks work nicely. I wouldn't recommend self-cleaning unless you don't mind the pits and chipping in the porcelain that may occur. I have to say they were great about replacing my first oven for that, and not all F&P ovens seem to have that problem, but having it happen twice to me, I'd just avoid self-cleaning. That's disappointing, since it should work and not damage the oven...but I think it's a risk. At least it didn't seem to fry the electronics as it did with earlier F&P ovens and other brands, which makes me think they learned from that and did something to make sure the electronics were protected during the high heat. I would buy the old F&P oven again (stainless front, blue interior), but one experience with the black mirror finish doors was enough for me. Too many finger prints and smears, and it doesn't take much of that to make it look yucky.

dadoes-thank you! I am still kind of paranoid to run the self cleaning mode. I am worried the "factory flaw" might be on a batch of the ovens, not just here or there. I don't want to risk it...although we did pay extra for a 5 year warranty. I just don't want to take the chance. If pillog's/trailrunner's tip does not work, I may just use the oven cleaner and make a mental not to NEVER use the self clean mode. Thanks again for the info!

Pillog-I skimmed that thread on the kitchens forum a day or so ago, so I am glad you spelled it out for me. I will DEFINITELY try it. Thank you so much for your response!

I have to tell you that am the only one I've heard of with the porcelain problem with the F&P oven. --I'm really beginning to think it's me! Anyway, I sure don't believe it's a given that you will have chipping and flaking after self-clean. I think more of a problem is spilling sugar, because where my oven porcelain has pitted is where pies have boiled over.

Before my experience, I'd read of problems with the porcelain coating in older Electrolux Icon and Wolf ovens. (I haven't heard anything about recent Elux ovens doing that.) The only problem I read about with F&P was an electronic problem after self-clean, but F&P successfully fixed that issue prior to the model I had, so I'm pretty sure yours is too new to have that worry, also.
