Lost cd/dvd player

My computer tells me I have no dc/dvd player in my computer. I did have one...where did it go? I don't even understand how this could happen. No one has ever removed it and no one has opened the case. Any input will be appreciated. Here is what the computer says:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Have you tried perhaps putting a music CD in the drawer to see if the autoplay starts the music? Can you open the drawer? Does the activity light come on at any time?

One of my computers did that and I popped the Nero CD in and re-installed the software and everything was fine. You may have the same success hopefully.

One reason I haven't bought some of the gardening CDs I crave is that they aren't for North American consumption. Some really good gardening stuff from Britain is only available for the British/European format. (The Quest for the Rose had this problem for a video, way back when) Could your source have gotten the reader that works in another part of the world?

If you run through all the basic steps (clean media, blow dust out of unit, check connections etc) and everything checks out ok, you could try and update the device firmware as outlined here: lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=6154

Will it play any of a DVD? I assume you've tried different DVDs (including commercial DVDs if all you've tried are ones you've burned yourself). If the answer to both suggestions is 'no', you can try getting one of those devices that cleans CD and DVD players. However, you might find that the cost of one of those kits is about half the price of a new DVD player of the caliber of a Cyberhome.

SACD is NOT a DVD format it is a unique high resolution CD format. Some SACD are also multi channel and many SACD discs are "Hybrid" and contain both a standard CD layer and a SACD layer and will play on both types of equipment. They will be noted as Hybrid discs on the case. DVD Audio is another higher resoultion audio format also capable of multichannels. DVD audio disc's can only be played on DVD Audio capable equipment. Dual Disc is another new format which has a normal CD side and a DVD side. The DVD side has a A/V format that is DVD compatible and may have audio and video.

What is a Nero CD? I put a music cd in and the light blinked a few times and then quit. Then nothing.

I have a Dell using XP SP2. Unfortunately I can't remember the model and my eyesight is not good enough to see it on the computer.
